On Monday at 10 a.m., the Henrico Fire Department in Virginia got the call: A dog had fallen through the ice at Glen Allen pond. When they arrived, they found a dog swimming for dear life in a hole in the ice, about 20 feet from shore. Poles were of no use because of the distance. The department improvised. They found a boat on the edge of the pond and climbed in. What follows are the amazing photos of the rescue:
Once safely on land, the owner, who was on the scene, comforted the dog and took him home. Capt. Rosenbaum praised the owner for not attempting to rescue the dog himself. He cited a startling statistic in a press release, according to CBS 6:
“Every year, about 50 percent of fatalities related to frozen waters starts with someone going after a pet that has fallen through the ice,” he said. “Please do not attempt to go out on the ice yourself.”
The Henrico Fire Department repeated those instructions on its Facebook page:
Avoid ice: When walking your dog, stay away from frozen ponds, lakes, and other water. You don’t know if the ice will support your dog’s weight, and if your dog breaks through the ice it could be deadly. And if this happens and you instinctively try to save your dog, both of your lives could be in jeopardy.
