Michelle Obama once said that First Dog Bo liked to nibble on people’s feet. Kiko, a Jack Russell terrier from Michigan, recently took Bo’s hobby a step further and gnawed off his diabetic owner’s infected big toe while the man lay in a drunken stupor. Owner Jerry Douthett — who didn’t know he was diabetic — says Kiko’s rudimentary surgery probably saved his life.

Dogs have been known to help the injured in times of war by sniffing out infections, and certainly are revered for their ability to help diabetics. Was Kiko one of these amazing dogs? Or was he — as some readers have suggested on other news sites — just taking advantage of a convenient nibble between meals? In a UPI article, Douthett says he’s not taking any chances, and will be wearing shoes to bed from now on.

The story unfolds in the video below.
