Fashionistas are well known for their love of dogs, but few designers in the history of fashion have gone so far as to incorporate actual canine imagery into stylish, branded apparel. Until recently, that is.
H&M had a brief fling with Snoopy, whose image graced a sleek, sexy black camisole a few years back (that classy, classicitem is still one of my personal faves, and it’s held up remarkably well). Edgy London designer Bella Freud‘s label is a line drawing of a panting dog, created by herartist father Lucian Freud,that ocasionally makes its way onto the front of Bella’s elegant sweaters (they’re called”Dog Jumpers”).
Across the Atlantic, in New York City, designer John Bartlett immortalized Tiny Tim, his beloved three-legged mutt, by makingthe dog’simage the must-have logo for well-heeled clothing connoisseurs. Sadly, Tim passed away last month, but his handsomelikeness lives on,appearing on every signature John Bartlett design,from T-shirtsand jeans to underwear. All are excellent holiday gifts for the dog lover on your list – especially the limited-edition holiday T-shirt, graced with a portrait of sweet Tim (above) with angel wings -and perfect last-minute solutions for the eleventh-hour Chanukah or Christmas shopper.
Now, there’s a new fashion hound on the style scene: Rebecca Bonbon. She’s a Japanese-born French Bulldog, as sweet-looking as her name sounds, and she’s already a compelling K9presence on Facebook and Twitter. And no wonder, for she boasts quite the style pedigree: she’s the brainchild of Yuko Shimizu, original creator of Sanrio’s super-popular Hello Kitty.
That famously fabulous feline isright up there in cultural significance alongside theiconic beckoning cat ManekiNeko – a symbol of welcome throughout Japan -and she’s the veryessence ofkawaisa (that’s Japanese for cuteness). Shenever goes out of style – in fact, she’s admired by many generations of devotees around the globe. SupermodelKate Moss and her young daughter areequallyardent Hello Kitty fans, as are Kimora Lee Simmons (who designs diamond-studded Hello Kitty gear) and her stylish young daughters.
But already, K9Rebecca Bonbon – “RBB” for short – looks poised to give the kitty competition a run for her money. There’s no arguing that she has kawaisa in spades.She’s a pup-culture phenomenon, and she’s setting her sights on world domination.
RBB is huge in her homeland, but her fame has spread to our shores,with trend-settingcelebrities on the order ofKim Kardashian (left),AshleyTisdale, Michelle Trachtenberg, Olivia Munn, and Camilla Alvesall spottedsporting RBB gear.
Four-footed fans of RBB, meanwhile, include Moxie, beloved K9 companion of Dogster CEO Ted Rheingold (who wears it extremely well, as the below photo proves).
