If you live near Fort Lauderdale, FLA, you may want to mark May 12th on your calendar as the day to visit the Companion Animal Disaster Preparedness Fair put on by the United Animal Nations (UAN) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), through their Community Animal Disaster Preparedness Partnership. The event is Friday, May 12 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Central Bark Doggy Day Care, 3699 N. Dixie Hwy. in Oakland Park.

United Animal Nations (UAN), through its volunteer-driven Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS), assisted more than 2,100 animals at six locations in three states in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last fall. Companion Animal Disaster Preparedness Fair highlights include:

        Canine blood drive.

Healthy dogs

      that weigh more than 35 pounds and are current on vaccinations can help sick or injured animals who need lifesaving blood transfusions. Donors receive a free health assessment, blood screening and donor ID tag. For more details on qualifications visit or call (954) 630-2231.

Microchip, tattoo and permanent pet identification information. Find out the best ways you can give your pets permanent, lifetime identification that will help you be reunited if you are separated due to disaster or other circumstances.

Pet first aid and CPR demonstration. Find out what to do if your pet is suddenly injured or ill.

Animal disaster kit information. Learn what to put in your pets disaster kit, and have identification photos taken so you can reclaim your pets if you are ever separated.

Local disaster plan information. Representatives from local emergency management and animal control agencies will speak about the communities disaster plan, answer questions and offer materials to help with your personal planning.

Pet-friendly shelter information. Learn more about Broward County’s pet-friendly evacuation shelter.
