Learn More About Yorkies

A great thing about blogging for Dogster is I get to learn all kinds of interesting things. For example, did you you know the following piece of Yorkie history? I sure didn’t! Thanks to Joni and Willie for barking in! You made Yorkshire Terrier Week better for us all!

My darling and beautiful pals from across the pond, Portia and Jenny sent me a beautiful flag of Yorkshire as well as a lovely charm to put on my collar. Mom hopes to take a picture of me with both this weekend to put on my page.

My flag and charm bear the symbol of the White Rose. This is the emblem of Yorkshire and has been so since the Middle Ages when, for most of the 1400’s the houses of Lancaster and York fought over the English crown. The Lancastrian emblem was the red rose so these wars were called the Wars of the Roses. They ended in 1485 when Lancastrian Henry Tudor was victorious over the Yorkist King Richard III at Bosworth Field. Henry then married Elizabeth of York (Richard’s niece) to unite the two warring houses as the House of Tudor, which took as its emblem the pink rose! Henry VIII, son of Henry Tudor
and Elizabeth of York was thus the king who truly united the blood of the Yorkists and Lancastrians.

More than 500 years of peace have not altered the pride of the Yorkshirepeople.

As a Yorkshire Terrier, I will be flying my flag with pride and wearing my charm with same! August 1 is Yorkshire Day and still celebrated across the country. This is a place which revels in it’s rich history and heritage.

Portia and Jenny, you are both as beautiful as my white rose. I had a present and a future but now I have a proud past as well. This is a gift that I will treasure all my life!
