Smoking dog film wins foreign prize

AN Australian short film about a smoking dog who searches for a French poet has won an award at an Italian festival.

The Long Walk won the award for the Best Art Film at the Asolo Art Film Festival in northern Italy.

Dr Michael Vale, who lectures in painting at Melbourne’s Monash University and directed the five minute film, said he was ecstatic about the win, which he learned of via email yesterday.

“I sort of stared at the email blankly. I thought it was a mistake,” Dr Vale said.

His film was the only Australian production selected to be screened at the festival.

It is about a dog, Le Chien Qui Fume (the smoking dog), who searches for the poet Arthur Rimbaud through Italy and France and was shot on location with a mini DV camera.
