I hope the Border Agents can prosecute this man for injuring the dog! The moral of the story is don’t injure animals to cover up your crimes!

Agents bust pot load in Douglas, rescue dog

BISBEE – Local Border Patrol agents this week busted a man driving a truck filled with 637 pounds of marijuana through Douglas – and rescued an injured dog in the process.

Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman Chuy Rodriguez said agents from the Douglas station on Tuesday morning spotted a suspicious Ford F-150 pickup carrying a load of mesquite firewood along Geronimo Trail Road.

After stopping the truck, the agents saw bundles of what later proved to be marijuana hidden beneath the wood.

On top of the wood lay an unresponsive, chained-down dog that appeared to be suffering from a puncture wound.

The driver of the truck said the dog was not his, yet he offered no explanation as to how it had come to be chained down in the back of his truck, Rodriguez said.

The agents, however, suspected the canine may have been used as a decoy to make the truck appear to be involved in innocent ranching activity.

“The agents think the dog may have been intentionally injured so as to keep it docile or quiet as it was on top of the pile,” Rodriguez said. “You know how most ranching dogs are generally pretty quiet.”

The agents then called Douglas animal control officers, who, fearing the dog might have been shot, brought it to veterinarian Dr. Michael Ames.

On Wednesday afternoon, a receptionist who answered the phone at Ames’ office said the dog had not been shot, but likely suffered wounds caused by lying on the mesquite wood.

The dog, identified as an Australian Shepherd mix, had been treated and turned over to the city animal shelter, receptionist Karina Varela said.

“He’s very sweet, and I think that some of the agents are actually thinking of adopting him,” Varela said. “It’s a very nice dog.”
