KAT 5 & KARE are due to arrive in Coffeyville, Kansas by late tonight. We will join rescue efforts with the local fire department & the other rescue groups there (HSUS & CODE 3).

Story: KAT 5 Animal Rescue

We have been in touch with rescuers on the scene & have learned more specific information. Animal rescuers have taken in 21 cats, 37 dogs & 1 bird that has already been reclaimed by it’s owner. Other birds are at an animal control officer’s house.

Many animals have been coated in oil. Animals brought in are washed twice to remove the oil. Some aggressive dogs have yet to be washed because there are not enough experienced volunteers. Many dogs are passing oil in their stool. Dogs & cats are being brought in with skin lesions from the oil.

Some local volunteers were helping, but many have been turned away being told that those lacking experience will just slow things down. As of Wednesday evening there were about 4 experienced HSUS people on scene, according to our source.

A temporary animal shelter is being moved from the baseball field at Woodland and Cline to the school gym at 3rd and Walnut. The cats were all moved to the school Wednesday night.

Code 3 is out doing rescues while HSUS is running the shelter. An ICS structure had not really been established and many animals were undocumented as the initial responders were so few that they could only manage the bare essentials. They started working on documentation of each animal Wednesday evening.

There is plenty of food, small dishes, and litter. Needed still are large dishes, extra large crates, muzzles, catch poles & small litter boxes or cardboard boxes to fit in crates. (Full list later in story).

Many animals are being quickly reclaimed by their owners.

All kittens are covered with fleas. All of the animals need to be treated for fleas. Donations of flea products are a priority. All animals should be vaccinated as many may not be protected.

Experienced people are needed to monitor the animals showing gastronomical issues from the tar. The affected animals need a bland diet like hamburger & boiled rice.

One volunteer said that she had to shave one matted dog so it could have a third bath because oil was down to the skin. Other dogs may need shaving. Code 3 has one pair of clippers. A donation of clippers is needed.

-Donate: funds are needed for supplies & gas money to get to Kansas & transports. Tax receipts given.

Volunteers need to have had the following shots:
Hepatitis A & B
Tetanus shot.

We have use of an RV that sleeps 8. If there is room, our volunteers can sleep in there. All of our volunteers may use the bath facilities in the RV.

Road information:
Due to flooding, 169 and 166 intersection is closed at Coffey ville. The best route if going south on 169 is to exit at Highway 400 and go west to Hwy 75 south through Independence to 166 east. Do not use Hwy 160 into Independence as it is very slow with many traffic lights, Hwy 400 is faster. There is another small highway going south from Independence through Deering/Dearing? to Hwy 166 that will cut off a few miles.
