A week before last April’s Fools Day, American Eagle Outfitters unveiled a line of clothes for dogs, and because the company was blatantly ignoring the centuries-old rules of April’s Fools Day, a lot of people didn’t realize it was a prank. Everybody was happy! Clothes for dogs!
Here’s what those clothes looked like:
And then people at American Eagle had to do that thing: Ha ha, fooled you! You can’t buy our clothes for dogs! They don’t exist! We don’t have any! Keep your money! Spend it elsewhere!
And then they felt dumb, quite possibly, realizing that they had created a huge demand for something they weren’t selling. So they said, “Customers! You want clothes for dogs? Get back at us in the fall.”
It’s now the fall. The clothes are ready and for sale on the website. Buckle up:
Here’s how the company put it: “We had an enormous reaction to our April Fool’s Day joke, and our customers were very clear about their desire for this product to become a reality,” said Michael Leedy, chief marketing officer of American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. “Following the journey of this idea has been fun for our team, and we are now excited to introduce real American Beagle Outfitters products to our customer.”
Interestingly, the clothes for dogs are designed to match the new AEO Holiday 2014 collection for people — the idea is that you can dress like your dog. Or at least complement him.
What do you think? We think those puffer vests will be huge. Not sure about the hats, though. It takes a rare dog to pull off a pink Selfie ski hat. (We won’t even touch Hump Day.)
