DA alleges race-fixing involving dogs on sex-performance pills
By DAN MURTAUGH
Staff ReporterThirteen people have been charged in an alleged race-fixing scheme at Mobile Greyhound Park in which dogs were slowed by being fed pills designed to boost men’s sexual performance, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said Friday.
A few members of the group gave herbal “natural male enhancement” pills to favored dogs a few hours before race time, Tyson said. The pill ingredients increased the dogs’ heart rates so they were exhausted when the races started, he said.
Others involved in the scheme placed bets on longshots in the races and divvied up the winnings, he said.
The scam netted at least $67,000 over several races in 2005 and 2006, said Eddie Menton, Mobile County Racing Commission Chairman.
Menton said he believes the alleged race-fixing scandal is the first to hit the Theodore racing track since it opened in 1973.
Mobile Greyhound Park is one of 40 greyhound racing tracks in 14 states across the country. More than $19 million has been bet at the track this year, including more than $110,000 in the matinee and evening races last Saturday, according to park records. Bets are taken on races at the track and on horse and dog races “simulcast” from other tracks.
Gary Guccione, executive director for the Kansas-based National Greyhound Association, said the Mobile scheme is the worst he has heard of in the 27 years he has been involved in the industry.
