Tuscaloosa animal rescue founder cleared of dog theft
The founder of an animal rescue organization has been cleared of a theft charge accusing her of stealing her neighbor’s dog.
Amy Giblin, the founder of Alabamians Defending Animal Rights, had been charged with third-degree theft after the 2-year-old schnauzer’s owner, Kirkey Wade, claimed Giblin didn’t return it after getting it treated and checked by a veterinarian last spring.
Giblin was cleared of the charge Tuesday after the judge ruled that no evidence had been produced that Giblin stole the dog.
“This is wonderful,” she said. “It proves that what I do is right.”
“Justice wasn’t served,” said Wade, who claimed to have overheard Giblin tell another person on a cellphone that she took the dog to Greensboro.
Giblin told The Tuscaloosa News earlier this month that she was disturbed to drive by Wade’s home and see the schnauzer tied up in the yard outside with no food or water. She said Wade told her the animal smelled too bad to keep inside, so Giblin paid nearly $400 to have the dog groomed and treated for a testicle infection caused by matted hair.
