An Air Canada employee who tried to catch a dog who had slipped out of a transport kennel has had his vehicle operator’s permit suspended because of his efforts. The cargo handler drove a service vehicle onto the runway, violating airport procedure, officials with the Winnipeg Airports Authority said.

“We will want to make sure he understands the processes and procedures and the violation,” Christine Alongi, spokeswoman for the WAA, said in an article in The Province. The employee can be retested in seven days to see if he can get his permit back.

The driver said he gave chase because he thought the dog was a danger to aircraft. But I have a feeling he may have been concerned about the dog, too. (Maybe he saw the video of the dog/fox racing around another runway last week, and never being apprehended.)

The Winnipeg dog was later caught and returned to the kennel.

We hear about dogs who go AWOL from their kennels at airports, and wonder how it can happen. And along comes a guy who tries to help out, and he gets disciplined for it.

“I guess no good deed goes unpunished,” a union spokesman said.
