Any excuse to celebrate our amazing dogs sounds like a great idea, so what could be better than celebrating your best companion on a holiday made just for them?
National Dog Day is always August 26, and this year, it’s on a Monday. Read on if you’d like a few ideas for ways to honor your dog—or any dog, for that matter—on this special day!
Who Founded National Dog Day?
Colleen Paige established National Dog Day in 2004—so 2024 is the 20th anniversary! Paige is a dog trainer, animal rescue advocate, pet and family lifestyle expert, conservationist, and author. She has also founded 12 other national holidays, all of which honor pets and wildlife in some way. These include National Puppy Day, National Cat Day, National Wildlife Day, and National Mutt Day.
Why Is National Dog Day on August 26?
Paige chose August 26 for National Dog Day because that was the day that her family adopted their first dog. She was 10 years old at the time, and they got their dog, Sheltie, from the local animal shelter. This date clearly had a huge impact on Paige, and she chose to honor this day by calling attention to all dogs. But the issue closest to her heart is the adoption of homeless dogs.
What Is National Dog Day All About?
National Dog Day was created as a way to celebrate all dogs, whether they are purebred or mixed. The most significant message that Paige wants to get out is the plight of these animals in need of rescue. The day is also about celebrating how dogs impact our lives—from the loving family pups to the canines that save people’s lives.
After all, dogs bring us love and comfort. They can be guard dogs and work in law enforcement, and they are therapy dogs and guide dogs. They risk their lives doing bomb detection, they find people in wreckage after a tragedy, and they can detect when someone is about to have a seizure.
National Dog Day also celebrates all breeds! It is staunchly against breed bans and calls attention to the atrocities of puppy mills and backyard breeders.
The 15 Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day
You can keep it simple and just celebrate your own dog by playing with them, giving them an excellent belly scratch, and generally thinking about the ways that your dog has brought joy and meaning into your life.
If you’d like to go beyond this, there are multiple ways you can honor the day.
1. Adopt a Dog
If you’ve been considering bringing a dog into your home, think about adopting a rescue. Alternatively, consider volunteering at your local rescue organization.
2. Donate
You can donate money or food, blankets, and/or toys to your local rescue group.
3. Write Your Government
Try writing to your local MP or congressman, and ask them to support the ban on puppy mills. You can also ask them to help ban gas chambers, which are used for euthanizing animals at some animal shelters.
4. Send Gifts
Send gifts to your friends and family members for their dogs. This way, you can celebrate their dogs too, not just your own.
5. Have a Party
Invite everyone with dogs and even those without pups but who love them. Hold it outside in your yard, at the dog park, or inside with cute doggy decorations and tasty dog treats!
6. Help Out the Elderly
If you have a neighbor with a dog and they are under the weather, are a senior, or generally have challenges walking their pet, volunteer to help out.
7. Find an Artist
You’ll want to find artists specializing in pets through sites like social media and Etsy. Support their work by having your dog’s portrait done!
8. Get New Toys
Your dog would love new toys! Go ahead and splurge on a toy or two to give to your pup!
9. Go On an Outing
Take your best friend on an outing. Go to a dog park that you don’t visit regularly, or take them on a hike—any place that is different from the norm or otherwise special.
10. Do a Grooming Session
If your dog isn’t a fan of grooming but it’s necessary, give them a good brushing. If your dog has any tangles or mats, they’ll feel great after the session. Brushing your dog can also form a stronger bond between you.
11. Give Them a Massage
Give your dog a well-deserved and relaxing massage. Everyone deserves at least one spa day at some point, so why not your dog?
12. Teach Your Old Dog a New Trick
Most dogs love learning, so teach yours a new trick! Make it a new command that you’ve been planning but haven’t gotten around to, or try a neat trick. If they are high energy and love chasing things, consider introducing the Frisbee.
13. Hire a Pet Photographer
Hire a professional pet photographer for a photo session! Your dog will likely have a great time, and you’ll end up with incredible photos of your pup.
14. Have a Beach Day
This won’t work if your dog is afraid of water, but they might still enjoy the sun and the sand. Basically, make it so everyone wins when you take the family and your dog for a day at the beach!
15. Spread the Word
Take to social media to talk about National Dog Day! You can use #NationalDogDay for your posts, check the hashtags of your local rescue groups, and share their posts looking for adoptive parents for their rescue dogs. Spread the word about the importance of caring for our dogs and adopting homeless dogs.
