You never know who you’ll meet while sniffing around Dogster. I recently found out that the winner of the Christmas sweater contest, Lilly the Pug, has a person with most impressive credentials.
Linda Lombardi is the pets and animals columnist for the Associated Press. She also has a clever and intriguing blog about animals. It’s called Animals Behaving Badly, and the name pretty much says it all. Recent posts include true stories about a cow in England who repeatedly jumped on a roof, a dog who ate $400, and a drunk squirrel.
It turns out Linda is something of an expert on blogs about interesting and odd animals/animal behavior. I asked her to recommend a few of her favorites for Dogsters who like learning about what “other” animals are up to. Here are a few of her top picks. (I’ve checked them all out. Please keep in mind if you visit the sites that they’re pretty “clean,” but they do discuss the biology and unusual behaviors of animals, so they’re not always Disney.)
Weirdimals: The Ever So Strange Animal Almanac — A well-written, funny, informative blog by a sort of fake British Victorian naturalist brought into the 21st century.
Ugly Overload — This blog celebrates naturally ugly animals, giving them their day in the sun. Note that if you have a sensitive child, you might want to screen it before sharing the site. And if you don’t like bug closeups, you might want to skip this one.
Discovery Animal News — This Discovery blog-turned-animal-news-site is crammed with cool animal stories, including a recent article about a fastidious monkey who flosses her teeth with her hair.
Zooilogix — Animal discoveries and science come to life on this fascinating blog. Check out this remarkable video of an octopus that uses coconut shells as portable protection. Who knew octopi could use “tools” like this?! Even Jake is impressed!
