5 Dogs to Follow on Facebook

Not only are these dogs adorable, they're using Facebook to spread some worthy messages.

I remember researching “pet social networks” and finding an article about Facebook deleting people’s accounts for their pets. In retrospect, that seems really silly, because dog Facebook pages have proved to be one of the social network’s most successful aspects. We’d be nothing without our dedicated Facebook fans — so thank you for following us!

Facebook has become a lot more sophisticated since my days in college, when tagging photos of people wasn’t even an option, and now allows one small dog with a big message to be heard by thousands of fans, creating real change in the universe. We’d like to highlight some of our favorite pooches on Facebook.

1. Harley to the Rescue

We covered Harley before as one of our Monday Miracles because he’s cool, but the more updates I see from him on my feed, the more I like him. A Chihuahua who was rescued from a puppy mill after a lifetime behind bars, he and his pal Teddy now work to bring awareness to the severe cost of yielding to the cuteness of that “puppy in the window.” His message is clear and reasonable and optimistic, despite some of the upsetting issues he’s using Facebook to speak out about. It’s good to have something to say, but if your message is obscured, then it ultimately goes unheard. Make sure to Like Harley’s page here.

2. Darbi Jo the Golden Retriever

Okay, I admit I have a particularly soft spot for this pup. I first wrote about Darbi back while I was still freelancing for Dogster. I’d found her while searching through Facebook and was intrigued by her and the pack of three Goldens she lives with (simply because I cannot even begin to imagine how much shedding that must result in). While Darbi Jo is light on her particular message, she does advocate for senior Golden Retrievers, who, often beset with health conditions, are surrendered to shelters where old age is often a death sentence. The fact that Darbi Jo would rather make us laugh than cry with her adorable antics is exactly what makes us pay close attention when she does talk about something serious. Don’t miss out on Darbi — Like her Facebook page here.

3. Ricochet the SURFice Dog

We’re sure all the Golden Retriever lovers are excited to see two of this breed on the list! If you don’t know Ricochet, then are you sure you know how to use the Internet? Ricochet’s destiny had been laid out for her as a service dog, but when the young dog failed to meet the requirements, it was like she had failed at life itself. But that’s when she took up surfing, becoming an advocate for people with disabilities and special needs. Her message rings so loud and clear, that even Betty White heard it. But the Ricochet moment that really sticks out to me is when she stuck to her support of gay marriage in the face of criticism from some of her fans. Now that takes courage. You can find her Facebook page here.

4. Happy Birthday Dunder

Dunder came into the collective Internet consciousness when his adorable time lapse video premiered on YouTube. Photographing the German Shepherd every day for a year, his human friend then compiled the images into one montage. The adorableness was too much to resist, and the video went viral. Dunder followed up with another time lapse for his second birthday — and we’re officially hooked. Dunder lives with another dog named Munster, who was rescued from a shelter, and so the dog who has basically grown up before our eyes speaks in support of adopting from shelters. Keep up to date with Dunder on his Facebook page here.

5. Little Lentil Bean

Perhaps the result of irresponsible breeding, Lentil is a French Bulldog puppy whose severely cleft palate almost cost him his life. Unable to eat like other dogs, he had to be fed through a tube. However, thanks to the hard work of his human friend and all the doctors and vets who want to see the little dog thrive, Lentil has been able to undergo corrective surgery and can now manage to eat some kibble on his own! Lentil has dedicated his life to working as an ambassador for both humans and animals with cleft palates. We’ve covered Lentil before, but make sure to check out his Facebook page here.
