  • The 4 Best Dog Vitamins

    1. PetHonesty 10-for-1 Multivitamin– Best Overall

    Purpose: Multifunctional
    Lifestage: Puppy, adult, senior
Allergy-friendly: No (contains chicken flavoring and eggs)

This multivitamin from PetHonesty targets 10 different areas of your pooch’s body. Fiber-filled pumpkin and active probiotics support the digestive system and aid in digestion comfort, even reducing gas! Omega-3s and many other vitamins support the coat, skin, heart, and joints – just to name a couple. This product works well as a general health booster and may be used at any life stage to help treat issues or as a preventative measure.

It has no artificial additives; all the ingredients are all-natural and highly reviewed as being loved by dogs and easy to consume. However, it does contain palm oil, likely to help bind together ingredients.

    Pros
    • Probiotics to target digestive health and reduce gas
    • No artificial flavors or preservatives
    • Soft and easy to chew
    Cons
    • Contains palm oil

    2. Nutri-Vet Multi-Vite – Best Value

    Nutri-Vet

    Purpose: Multifunctional
    Lifestage: Adult, senior
    Allergy-friendly: No (contains soy)

Like Zesty Paws, Nutri-Vet has a range of supplements targeted to support different bodily functions. They also produce this “Multi-Vite” as a multifunctional supplement designed to support the general health of dogs, great for preventative care and general support. This product is our pick for the best dog vitamin for the money. It’s a highly rated product that is available in bulk and at a very reasonable price. It’s a good product for a great value.

What we personally did not like about this product is that it contains sugar as an ingredient. Typically added sugar is something to be avoided in your dog’s diet, but considering this multivitamin is fed in only the smallest quantities, there is not much to worry about here. Some reviews also didn’t like the texture of this tablet. While labeled as “chewable,” the texture is quite hard and needs to be broken up for older dogs with decaying dental health.

    Pros
    • Affordable
    • Liver flavor
    • Bulk pack
    Cons
    • Hard to chew tablet
    • Contains sugar

    3. Wholistic Pet Organics Canine Complete – Premium Choice

    Wholistic Pet Organics

    Purpose: Multifunction
    Lifestage: Puppy, adult, senior
    Allergy-friendly: No (contains fish)

This product is for those looking for a more natural and holistic approach to supplementing vitamins into their dog’s diet. All ingredients are naturally derived, and it does not contain any filler ingredients or artificial additives. The powered form is great to easily mix into a wet diet; while messy, it is good for those who will not take a tablet.

Made in the USA, this product has all the good stuff and none of the added nasties, a great general vitamin for dogs of all life stages. The powder is high in healthy fats and protein to support sound general health. It does contain fish, so it is not suitable for dogs with seafood allergies.

    Pros
    • All-natural ingredients
    • Powder formula easy to mix into food
    • High protein
    Cons
    • Messy preparation

    4. PetAg Sure Grow Multivitamin – Best for Puppies

    PetAg Sure

    Purpose: Growth and development
    Lifestage: Puppy
    Allergy-friendly: Yes

Many vitamins are recommended for older adults or senior dogs to support their declining and changing health. But we must remember that the very youngest dogs are also going through many changes in their first year of life and may need extra support. This is our favorite pick for a puppy vitamin. It targets the joints and connective tissues to support a rapidly growing body. It helps keep a small body keep up with high energy demands and growth spurts. Reviewers have even noted that this product has helped their puppy heal extra quickly from some inevitable puppy injuries!

In addition, vitamin D3 is used to help increase the rate of absorption in the digestive tract to ensure your pup is getting all the goodness from their diet and channeling it straight into powering their life. However, the tablet is quite large in size and doesn’t suit puppies of small breeds, but it is easily broken up for ease of feeding.

    Pros
    • Supports active puppies’ connective tissue
    • Vitamin D3 boosts nutrient absorption
    • Encourages quick healing from injuries
    Cons
    • Tablets too large for small breed puppies

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Dog Vitamins

    Does My Dog Need Vitamins?

It’s common for us humans to take a regular multivitamin. We feel it tops up our diet to ensure we are getting everything we need to function correctly and boost our energy. Supplements can be beneficial for us, seeing as our diets vary wildly day to day and person to person. However, with our canine companion’s diet, all complete foods are regulated by the FDA to meet all nutritional requirements. Why do dogs’ vitamins and supplements exist if this is the case?

Even on a complete commercial diet, some dogs can lack vitamins. This is often senior or immunocompromised dogs. Their bodies are usually not synthesizing or absorbing all the vitamins needed to thrive. But deficiencies can occur in dogs of any age and can often go unseen. These deficiencies can lead to suboptimal health or condition and lead to more severe complications in the future.

See a Vet Before Giving Vitamins to Your Dog

If you suspect your dog is not functioning at 100%, you should see a vet before picking up the multivitamins. Especially if your dog already takes supplements or medications, any additional supplementation can interfere with these or even cause vitamin overdose, so vet guidance is needed.

Healthy dogs often do not need to take vitamins, but some may be fine to add preventative measures. Dogs will likely benefit from vitamin supplementation if they:

    • Have been diagnosed with a deficiency
    • Have allergies or ongoing intestinal upset
    • Are on a home-made diet
    • Are eating very little
    • Are picky eaters
    • They are getting old

    Benefits of Vitamins for Dogs

General multivitamins can promote overall good health in dogs. It can ensure they have all they need to thrive and support immune systems in preventative care for aging dogs. Vitamins can give dogs the things they lack biologically to cover any gaps created by either poor health or poor eating habits.

Vitamins are easy to use as they can often be given directly as treats or discreetly mixed into foods. They are a good way to deliver nutrition quickly and in a small amount. This is especially good if your dog is not eating enough to support their body needs or eating only food that does not meet all their nutritional requirements.

Targeted vitamins can work to support functions that have been identified to be lacking. You’ll commonly find vitamins targeted for joint health and allergies in particular. These are two prevalent health problems owners have to juggle with their pets.

Expert tip – when introducing vitamins, make only one change at a time to monitor if there are any effects. Too many changes make it hard to identify if vitamins are effective.

    Presentation of Vitamins

How you give your dog their vitamins can sometimes be challenging. If you’re lucky, your dog might happily take literally anything you pass to them and munch away on a chicken-flavored tablet with ease. But other dogs aren’t so trusting! Many dogs can be very picky, and the concentrated vitamins are often strong in flavor, which can be off-putting for dogs.

Tablet forms can be given directly, either voluntarily or forcefully, with a pill dispenser. The latter is not favorable if the vitamin is to be given long-term. Tablets can often be broken or crushed up to hide amongst your dog’s usual diet or their favorite treat.

If tablets prove difficult for you to feed your dog, you may benefit from exploring other forms of vitamins. Powders are often very popular because they are easily mixed in with wet foods. They are also popular additives to homemade diets as they can be incorporated into the diet, not fed separately.
