Rob Velevis says on Christmas Eve, his 1-year-old pug named Scooter slipped out from under the back fence and disappeared.
He and his wife have spent the last week and a half looking for him.
They scoured a nearby park, checked the shelters and put up fliers, but it was no use. Scooter was nowhere to be found.
Then came anonymous letter in the mail: it was postmarked from Tulsa, OK and addressed simply to “Family.”
It begins, I am writing to tell you that your little dog has a good and safe home.”
Later, the writer confesses, I saw your little dog crossing the a street in to a park that is by a school. He came up right up to me, and I took him and gave him to my daughter on Christmas.”
The Velevises couldn’t believe their eyes. It wasn’t a ransom letter, just the confession of an anonymous mother who admitted to stealing Scooter and giving him to her own daughter for Christmas. Enclosed with the typewritten note was a $20 bill as payment.
The couple is keeping the letter and the money in a bag in case they need to have them fingerprinted.
Were expecting our first child in May,” said owner Kim Velevis, and the fact that our little girl might not be able to grow up around Scooter, it crushes us.”
The family has retraced the steps and now can imagine exactly where Scooter was stolen, but what they can’t imagine is how anyone could knowingly do such a thing.
We just cant believe that another human would do this to somebody else, especially on Christmas Eve,” said husband Rob She knew in the letter it was going to wreck our family.”
