Golfer Rescues Drowning Dog
By Cordell Whitlock
(KSDK) – A woman golfing in Kirkwood Tuesday morning found time to save a life. 76 year old Jean Kautzman rescued a drowning dog at Westborough Country Club in Kirkwood.
Kautzman had plenty of excitement before her round even began as she passed a pond approaching her first hole of the day. “We were coming down this cart path on number 5 and everyone was stopped and they were saying look. I thought it was a duck. Here is this little bitty dog paddling upright in the water and it couldn’t swim,” Kautzman said. Jean’s purse hints at her love for dogs. Her actions made it obvious. “I said I’ve got to save that puppy so I took my shoes and socks off and started swimming and I got a hold of him.” He is actually a her.
Lola the Pomeranian proves not all dogs can swim. Once Jean grabbed Lola adrenaline became a precious commodity. “I ran over here and Jean said I don’t think I can make it and I said yes you can Jean yes you can,” said Sue Rapp who was paired with Jean. Chris Henrich is Lola’s owner.
Henrich was moving Tuesday and apparently didn’t notice when Lola wandered away winding up at Westborough. She was appreciative of Jean’s efforts. “I thought if it had been a bunch of men they would have said oh to bad. She obviously had a lot of heart,” said Chris. “I’m so happy we were here and able to save her baby,” Jean said.
After her efforts to rescue Lola, Jean kept the same clothes on, dried off, and resumed playing her 18.
