Man dies trying to get his dog out of Pittsburgh river
A man jumped into the Monongahela River to chase after his dog, but had trouble in the water, slipped beneath the river surface and later died.
Michael Schreiner, 34, was walking his dog on a riverside trial Thursday evening when it jumped in to chase some ducks, Pittsburgh River Rescue Chief Richard Linn said. Schreiner went in after the dog and began struggling in the water.
Rescue divers found Schreiner and pulled him out about 30 minutes after he dived in, authorities said. Schreiner died later at Mercy Hospital.
The dog swam to shore safely.
