Accused Dog Killer ‘Obsessed’ With Vick Case
POSTED: October 31, 2007

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A Hall County man accused of brutally killing two dogs was obsessed with the Michael Vick dogfighting case, according to court testimony Wednesday.

Officials charged Marty Eugene Savage, 50, with two counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals. Authorities said Savage admitted in an interview that he killed two dogs — a 5-week-old mixed breed puppy named Buddy and a 7-year-old black Pomeranian named Smoky. Officials said Savage repeatedly stomped and stabbed Buddy in the head and Smoky was drowned in a toilet.

Savages wife, Kathleen Savage, told authorities about the dogs deaths, according to the Gainesville Times newspaper. The dogs were killed three weeks apart and Savage was arrested October 10. Kathleen Savage has filed for divorce.

Officials found the dogs remains in plastic bags which had been thrown over a fence and into a wooded area. The remains were sent to Athens for necropsies.

Authorities told the Gainesville Times that Savage agreed with his wifes account of what happened to the dogs after giving them different stories earlier.

Investigators testified during a preliminary court hearing Wednesday that they searched the Savage home and found a knife matted with hair and blood and also news clippings of the Michael Vick dogfighting case taped to the wall. His wife testified that Marty Savage was “obsessed” with the Vick case. She also told the Gainesville Times after the hearing, her husband referred to the clippings as his “wall of shame.”
