Idgie the Dachshund Has a New BFF: Ruth the Paralyzed Kitten

It's your classic dog-meets-cat friendship story, as these photos and video make clear.

Meet Idgie and Ruth, this year's first entry in the revered dog-meets-cat-and-the-two-of-them-bond-forever category. They live in harmony down in Lake Mary, Florida, where Idgie the two-year-old Dachshund has become a friend and protector of her pal Ruth, a seven-month-old kitten who is afflicted with a set of paralyzed back legs. Naturally, they make for an adorable couple.

The Idgie and Ruth story picks up when they were discovered abandoned outside someone's driveway. They were found by the local animal services organization, and when Ruth was taken away for medical examination and attempted treatment on her back legs, Idgie became quite the miserable pup in her absence!

The duo were eventually adopted by Jacqueline Brown, who co-owns the Hollywood Houndz boutique. She told the Orlando Sentinel that Idgie and Ruth are as inseparable as it gets: Idgie will bring new toys over to Ruth for sharing (or, more likely, feline approval), and even acts as an impromptu buffer to shield Ruth from any new dogs who enter the establishment.

The strength of the bond between the two prompted Jacqueline to name them after a couple of confirmed best friends forever in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes

Idgie and Ruth have become a huge hit with the local community -- customers have brought them Christmas gifts to share -- and a Facebook page for the duo is in the process of being set up. In the meantime, you can indulge in their cuteness in the video below.
