I'd say most of the watchdog stereotypes, German Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, and other "bred-to-guard" dogs are very good.
But, really, any dog that doesn't adore absolutely EVERYBODY and will at least bark, is a fair watchdog.
That said, even toy breeds will give a warning, just not too much intimidation or a physical attack, but a barking dog will deter people in any case.

Airedales make great watchdogs. Great guard dogs too, 'cause they don't back down from anything! Living in the country, we occasionally have "wild" visitors come into the yard. I never had to worry about confronting them; B'Elanna always sent them on their way.

Great Pyrenees make great watchdogs. Their size alone is intimidating, also they bark at almost anything. They are meant to protect, and can look really scary when on the watch. Now if they are, is a different story. Mine can be a big love especially with kids, but if we are not home he can be pretty protective.

Bernese Mtn. Dogs are great "Watchdogs" because they will let you know when anyone is around. They are very aware of their surroundings and tend to be wary of strangers, however they are not at all aggressive. So if you are looking for a good watchdog who won't maul the UPS man, the Berner is a great choice, not to mention they are adorable, cute and cuddly and are protective of all of their family members 2 legged or 4 legged.

AIREDALE TERRIER... THE KING OF TERRIERS

I lived with an Airedale mix... and have known other Airedales. They are so intune with their surroundings and very discerning. My Airedale passed away May of '08, but in April of '08 there was a minor earthquake. Ten minutes before I felt the rumble... She was standing guard at the door. The best "watchdog" is any dog that can bark. Or howl. Or make any kind of dog noise. Period. All the stereotype ones make better guard dogs. There's a difference between guard dog and watchdog. Don't forget that. ;]

I'm actually not very pleased with this question. ALL dogs unless properly trained are only alarm systems, in that they alert their people. Some breeds, such as my German Shepherd, are more protective by nature than others, but use of them only as a security system should be discouraged. People in the market for a "guard dog" often either get more than they bargain for with an overly aggressive dog, or not what they intended at all, and a dog that will only bark but has no bite drive at all.

If someone is thinking about getting a dog strictly based on a perceived reputation like this they shouldn't be trusted with guardianship of any canine! Dogs are living creatures, not guns. If you are interested in doing protection work with your pet, it takes years of practice and LOTS of money/training to know they are reliable, no matter of their innate nature (though some are obviously more apt for this position than others).

The fact that the German Shepherd choice is currently at 50%, demonstrates why communities are starting to ban them for being an "aggressive breed" and it's so hard for me and my [well trained] big dog to find a new apartment.

There is also a distinct difference between a guard dog and a watch dog. Any dog is capable of biting if not trained otherwise or put into a stressful situation and every dog with a bark is capable of being an alarm for it's people.

My own personal fur-lined burgalar alarm of choice is an American Eskimo. My Bailey not only doesn't let anyone on the porch without letting me know. I also know when anyone in the neighborhood slams a car door, blows their horn, or even walks up the street. He learned that when the mailman comes up onto the porch that there is a shadow that goes across the ceiling. When he hears the mail truck, he barks. Then he sits and looks up at the ceiling for the mailman's shadow. I've always said that I would have it made if I ever got robbed by the mailman! LOL!

Personally I favor the flock guarding breeds such as the anatolian shepherd, tibetian mastiff, great Pyr. All make great guard dogs... but if you want the best "Watchdog" ever... get a toy fox terrier : )

I think a good watchdog is one that gives warning to strangers on or near your property, but greets neighbors and friends with love and butt wiggles. That is what makes me a great watch dog.

Sharpei and chow-chow's make the best watchdogs. They are very protective of their person and nobody will every get near their human or home without their approval.
I on the other hand am a very bad watchdog. I am getting older, deaf and blind so I tend to bite first and figure out who you are later.

Any dog can make a great watch dog for a home. In a lot of cases a watch dog is there to make noise and alert others to the fact that someone unwanted is close. Big dogs get bum wraps because they are big and have big teeth. I had 3 little dogs growing up and they were more toward biting than big dogs.Just treat ALL dogs with kindness and they are great.

American Pitbull Terriers are the best watchdogs !! Not only do they look intimidating, which usually deters people away from the get go, but they are committed to protecting you & your family regardless of danger to them !!! My female, Sativa is the one who hears people & warns us with her bark & My male, Thai usually does the scaring off & enforcing...if need be !!?!! AWESOME DOGS ALL THE WAY AROUND !!!!!!

As friendly as our Great Dane is with people and children - he will guard his house, cat, people and yard with a deafening, deep "Woof!" that has scared me in the middle of the night! Plus, those long legs rear up like a horse when he's just playing.....I would hate to see what he would do to a prowler!

Belgian Shepherd Dog - especially the Malinois as the Police Forces are now using them alongside the German Shepherd with great success and they are not suseptible to as many problems, especially hip problems. They are lighter on their feet and much faster than the German Shepherd.

I am the best watchdog! I am the sweetest dog but bark whenever someone is outside. If one of my masters are around when someone comes inside I am sweet to them. If they come in alone I bark. When they try to hurt them when I first see them I attack. Not the complete best thing because I found out my master's brother's friend was just playing. . .so I got in trouble.

English Mastiff, they notice the slightest of details and their black mask makes them look intimindating. But the creme de la creme would be the Doberman Pinscher because they were specifically breed to be a protector, whereas GSD and others alike were bred to herd sheep or what have you.

Any Dog can be defeated by a Vacuum cleaner. All a burglar has to do is bring a dust buster along, and pretty much any dog will show him/her where to find all the best the home has to offer. That being said; it is ridiculous to get a dog for a watch dog unless the dog is specifically trained for that purpose.

I am a min pin and I let momma know who's good from whose bad. Also I let her know when she needs to look out the window and see whats going on or who is nearby. I may not be a protection dog but I warn momma of any impending danger.

I am the biggest baddest watch dog. I keep strangers at a good distance from momma unless she invites them into our space. I keep a pretty good eye on the neighborhood as well so let her know when something is going on that she needs to be aware of. Despite our tiny size, min pins can have a very protective nature (even though our damage would be minimal at best).

Any Pup can be a great guard dog. Sure, us Dobermans and the GSD's and the Rotty - we are all great at it - but so is the rescue from the humane society... WE all love our peeps and will alert them no matter what size and shape...

What kind of question is this anyway??

Hey, I'm a super watch dog. I know who's a friend or neighbour and don't bark at them. If a stranger (or the mail carrier, or a contractor (they're all strange to me!)...) comes around - I'll let my folks now with a stern WOOF (or two, or three....)! I love this opportunity to let my terrier side out!

I think that most of those "guard dogs" are stereo typed. I've noticed that Chihuahuas make better watch dogs than Shepherds. I think that Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and terriers make the best watchdogs. Odie's a Terrier mix and he's a super watch dog. I'm fostering a Pit bull and Odie is a way better watch dog than him. Kinda a ridiculous if you ask me.

Any dog can make a good watch dog. If the dog is very bonded and loyal to the owners and wants to protect them then they will.
Really for a watch dog all the dog needs to do is to bark and make noise to alert the owners there is a problem or an intruder on the property.

Our yorkie's bark is much bigger than her body! She will wuff up a storm when somebody comes to the door (or when somebody knocks on a door on the television).

... that said, the moment somebody comes through the door, she quits barking and runs off to bring them toys so that the visitor will play with her. Nobody will sneak up on us certainly, but if they have the courage to open the door and step inside, they'll end up with a small dog dropping stuffies and squeaky toys on their shoes.

Basenji are very alert as they are both sight and scent hounds. My angel sis Egypt heard my Mommy calling for help after she had fallen on ice and couldn't get up due to a broken elbow. Daddy was upstairs with the TV blaring, but Egypt heard and went flying off the bed (those are Daddy's words) and downstairs to the door to our garage and just stared! He went outside and found a very cold and relieved Mommy struggling and slipping on an ice patch. When I hear or see something out of the ordinary, I make sure I am between it and my Mommy. Absolutely nothing can sneak up on me!!!
