I am a Cairn Terrier and a very good watch dog...Mom used to have Rottweiler's and they were very friendly..but this was over 30 years ago before they got really popular and overbred
The shin tzu makes the best watch dog.
A dachshund will not let anything or anyone arrive at your house unannounced. They will not be distracted or dismissed without your ok.
Gordon Setters make great watch dogs (until the person gets inside then we try to lick and sniff that person into submission).
I'd say most of the watchdog stereotypes, German Shepherd Dog, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, and other "bred-to-guard" dogs are very good.
But, really, any dog that doesn't adore absolutely EVERYBODY and will at least bark, is a fair watchdog.
That said, even toy breeds will give a warning, just not too much intimidation or a physical attack, but a barking dog will deter people in any case.
Shih Tzu! BOL! Very Loud will bark at ANYTHING!
A mutt!!
i ove this webse so much......................
Well, a min pin is a great watch dog. We hear everything and have vicious bark for small dogs. ; )
My pekes are great watchdogs! Wouldn't be good guard dogs of course, but wonderful watchdogs!!! Nothing gets by them ;)
Chow Chow!!!
Airedales make great watchdogs. Great guard dogs too, 'cause they don't back down from anything! Living in the country, we occasionally have "wild" visitors come into the yard. I never had to worry about confronting them; B'Elanna always sent them on their way.
Min Pins, of course. We are great barkers and alert mommy and daddy whenever they need to see what is going on.
Great Pyrenees make great watchdogs. Their size alone is intimidating, also they bark at almost anything. They are meant to protect, and can look really scary when on the watch. Now if they are, is a different story. Mine can be a big love especially with kids, but if we are not home he can be pretty protective.
Of course, a min pin is a great watch dog. We alert our pawrents of everything and anything.
of course, Beagles would make nice watchdogs too because of their strong barks!
I'm a minischnauzer and I'm a super watch dog. I am the first line of defense against all intruders and I take my job very seriously.
Just read Dog World or was it Dog Fancy? Anyway, they profiled an excellent watchdog... the Tibetan Mastiff.
Giant Schnauzers make wonderful guard dogs! Ours have also been trained by a local police dog trainer so they are the first line of defense in our home.
I voted German Shepherd, but many dogs of many breeds make excellent watch dogs.
I really think CATAHOULA LEOPARD dogs make the best watchdogs.Gracie lets me know when someones around even when I cannot see them yet.No one gets near me with her next to me,she just looks like she might bite. But in reality, she would only bite if she felt I was threatened.
Min Pins are excellent watch dog and will sound the alarm every time someone enters your home, knocks on your door or sometimes when they just walk near you house. You don't have to be big to be a good watchdog!
my dog delilah makes a great watchdog but she was not a watchdog what i mean is she looks over at you thinking what to do.she never ever barked if some one tried to hurt you of course she would protect you.and my 3 chihuahuas buddy oroe and grizzley bear are awsome protector's so there a A+ for proctecting dogs.my other dogs bleu and bella my weimaraners were also great protectors for us they bark 24/7 though that is the only thing we HATE about them is that they bark so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Bull Mastiffs make rather good watch dogs.
Min Pins xD We're feisty little dogs!
* A CHIHUAHUA WILL NOT LET A MOUSE NEAR YOUR HOUSE *
* A CHIHUAHUA IS THE BEST WATCHDOG ~ EVER ! *
Any size/breed of dog that will bark to sound an alarm is going to deter burglers.
The American Pit Bull & Staffordshire Terrior have been proven for years to be excellent Guardians. A very good friend of ours had a Pit Bull that practically raised his 3 children.
Any Dog that barks will be a good watch dog. It's the noise that the bad guys are afraid of, don't want the neighbors coming over to complain OR calling the police :-)
Chow...Shasta was a fierce barker. Nothing escaped her attention.
Miniature Schanuzer.
They may be small, but my little boy is always there to protect me, and always lets us know when someone new is near!
I believe any dog is a good watch dog when it loves its family. Even the smallest Chihahua will attack something that is threatening its loved ones.
I am a black lab mix and everone thinks I am the best watch dog! I even taught all of my watch dog skills to my little cousin who is a miniture poodle. We both protect the house very well.
Yorkshire Terriers are excellent watch dogs! They have such a sharp sense of hearing that they'll alert you to a car or person approaching long before you'd become aware of it on your own. And, they LOVE to bark!!!! BOL
Any breed can be a watch dog as long as they have enough trainning
All dogs can make good watchdogs!
Shar-Pei are a breed that takes being a watchdog very seriously. Folks can't even look at our house and we bark.....
Min Pins!! We are very good watch dogs because we are alert and vocal about any strange noises or people!
We Chihuahuas make perfect watch dogs. No one man or beast gets close to our door without us notifying mom.
Not only do MinPins make great watch dogs, they police our cats also!
I believe any dog can be a watchdog, however, I do not want my dogs to be watch dogs. I wouldn't want them to get hurt. All they have to do is be my little angels (cough cough) :o)
The Belgian breeds (Tervurens, Lakenois, Malinois, & Groendaels) make excellent watchdogs, Very smart and very savvy dogs.
All dogs can make good watchdogs .... but Min Pins Rule!!!
^..^
Dude, I am way scarier than 1/2 the German shepherds we know :)
Bullmastiffs!!!! they are the original gameskeeper night dog that was what they were bred to do guard.
My chahuahua is a great watch dog she can hear people comming before I do. a friend of mine whom she did not know stopped by, he gave me a hug and she thought he was hurting me she came at him with teeth showing and was ready to protect me. she is normaly a shy little lady of 4 1/2 pounds.
Bernese Mtn. Dogs are great "Watchdogs" because they will let you know when anyone is around. They are very aware of their surroundings and tend to be wary of strangers, however they are not at all aggressive. So if you are looking for a good watchdog who won't maul the UPS man, the Berner is a great choice, not to mention they are adorable, cute and cuddly and are protective of all of their family members 2 legged or 4 legged.
I'm a Amer Staff mix and I'm a great watch dog..mom says I'm the burglar alarm for people walking by, ups, mailman, etc! I sound really mean but I'm really part Foster Farms.. :o)
I do believe that they all qualify well however since we got Teddy, he has been ever so vigilant around here! Don't let that cuddly little face fool you!
I think Dobermans should take the cake on this one...but of course, I am biased. Police dogs, search dogs, guard dogs, family dogs....DOBES DOBES DOBES!!!!
Oohh...memememememeeeeee!!!!! I love to bark and am a very good watchdog! Unless you have a treat and then I'm your best friend :)
WOof!
Dogue de Bordeaux
No; not me! I would've licked a stranger to death maybe but no barking from me. Mom said the construction crew almost took me home.
Boxer's are great watch dogs!
I am a rat terrier and my sister Chole is half rattie...we are great watch dogs
Pembroke Welsh Corgi!
I Voted For A German Shepherd, But There Are Others That Are Good Like A Doberman Pinscher And A Doberman.
Dobermans and Mastiffs are great too! :)
A Doberman Pinscher ~~ A beautiful dog
We Japanese chins make good watchdogs. We bark at anyone who has never been to our home, Our anyone who forgot to pet us the last time they came! :-)

Any dog weather it's a purebred or a mutt will bark at any kind of disturbance . Some dogs do more barking than others my two one mixed breed and one pure dachshund will warn me when there is a disturbance ..
My chihuahuas are wonderful WATCH dogs.. As far as GUARDING goes, I doubt that would work much ahah. :)
I'm a Cairn and my Mom thinks I make a good watch dog. When we are on a walk I don't like certain people aproaching my Mom.

a min pin is a great watch dog. woof woof woof :)
a min pin is a great watch dog. woof woof woof :)
SHAR PEIS, SHAR PEIS, SHAR PEIS!!!!
I should know, I am one!!! I protect my house by all means, My pawrents know that when I bark, its for a reason.
I have very precious pawrents and want to make sure they are well looked after.
AIREDALE TERRIER... THE KING OF TERRIERS
I lived with an Airedale mix... and have known other Airedales. They are so intune with their surroundings and very discerning. My Airedale passed away May of '08, but in April of '08 there was a minor earthquake. Ten minutes before I felt the rumble... She was standing guard at the door. This truly was the most awesome scene, I have ever witnessed.
My human family say , I am a good watch dog, for a Cocker Spaniel. I let them know who's coming when I see a car on driveway, or curb by house.
A mixed breed can be really good! they can have many personAlities like buddy is a good watch dog but doesnt bite!woo hoo mixes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best "watchdog" is any dog that can bark. Or howl. Or make any kind of dog noise. Period. All the stereotype ones make better guard dogs. There's a difference between guard dog and watchdog. Don't forget that. ;]
Having never had any of those breeds, I really can't comment. But I can say that my Westie mix is an EXCELLENT watchdog. I'm not sure if it's a trait of her breed or just that she's nosy though.
I assume by watch dog, you are referring to a barker and not a trained attack dog. All of us here at the Dog House are barkers but it is an excited "Somebody's Here!!!!!!!!" bark. I can only hope intruders don't know the difference.:)
If anyone owns a Min Pin, they know that their pup will alert them to grass growing! haha! Seriously though, Gibbon can distinguish the familiar and unfamiliar noises outside the apartment and he has been known to bark at the people in the building across the street when he sees them on their roof deck!
1 more vote for Chow Chows! I'm a Chow/Shepherd mix and the best watch dog ever. My GSD brother's been off duty since I arrived.
I say pure bred black Labradors make the best watch dogs because they just bark and lay down in just the right spot so that the intruder can't help but trip over them ;P
shiloh is a good watchdog
shiloh is a good watchdog
shiloh is a good watchdog
shiloh is a good watchdog
Brady is a mutt. And he is the best watch dog we have ever had! He alerts us of anyone pulling in the driveway, sometimes he even lets us know when someone drives by on the road.
:D
Most of the breed aren't - but our bulldog is a good watch dog and a great guard dog
Dalmatians make AWESOME watch dogs. They are highly intelligent and VERY protective of their pees and their property. I DARE someone to try breaking into my house. I can guarantee that Birdy will not lick them to death.
I don't think it's the breed! I think it's a combo of the dog's personality and training.
Shelties! With my barking ability you can not sneak up on the property line let alone the house! BOL!!!!
Anatolian Shepherds make amazing watchdogs!! We are very very territorial and love to protect our people!!!
most dogs are good watch dogs! they bark at most strange noises and people at the door!
did you mean guard dog? cos the poll would make more sense to me then
I'm actually not very pleased with this question. ALL dogs unless properly trained are only alarm systems, in that they alert their people. Some breeds, such as my German Shepherd, are more protective by nature than others, but use of them only as a security system should be discouraged. People in the market for a "guard dog" often either get more than they bargain for with an overly aggressive dog, or not what they intended at all, and a dog that will only bark but has no bite drive at all.
If someone is thinking about getting a dog strictly based on a perceived reputation like this they shouldn't be trusted with guardianship of any canine! Dogs are living creatures, not guns. If you are interested in doing protection work with your pet, it takes years of practice and LOTS of money/training to know they are reliable, no matter of their innate nature (though some are obviously more apt for this position than others).
This is my profile, since I didn't log in before submitting the last post and I'm SURE there are people who disagree with me.
I think a Jack Russell makes a nice watchdog. They bark at everything and are afraid of nothing!
I don't ever worry about being home alone with two Jack Russells standing guard (they take this job very seriously...just ask the UPS guy).

The fact that the German Shepherd choice is currently at 50%, demonstrates why communities are starting to ban them for being an "aggressive breed" and it's so hard for me and my [well trained] big dog to find a new apartment.
There is also a distinct difference between a guard dog and a watch dog. Any dog is capable of biting if not trained otherwise or put into a stressful situation and every dog with a bark is capable of being an alarm for it's people.
Well, I am a Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher mix, so I think both Chihuahuas and Min-Pins make great watchdogs! We are small, fearless little ones who are not afraid of anyone or anything! And we love to bark- at anyone who comes to the door! No way a burglar would get past me. I would have a thing or two to tell them!
Hi! I'm Elise and I am a Doberman Pinscher. My Mom feels we are the best protectors available.
I don't think there is one breed that is the BEST guard dog.there are a lot of breeds that are wonderful guard dogs like Dachshunds,Dobermans,American Pit Bull Terriers,American Staffordshire Terriers,German Shepherds, and Rotties are just a few of what I think are some of the best guard dog breeds and are WODERFUL FAMILY ORIENTED DOGS.
Any dog. You take good care of them and they'll take even better care of you!
If you want a guardian, get a guardian breed! Get a mastiff (Old English, Neo, Fila, etc.). Great dogs, created to guard people and property. Hard to beat that combo.
all my dogs, no matter the breed have been excellent watchdogs. I did say WATCH because they alerted me............... but I think a few would let a theif in and show them where the silver is located, if it meant a treat and tummy rub :)))
You do know that cow dogs are the BEST to watch. They sit in the window and stare all day long! Goodness only knows what they are watchin' but they are sure doing it all the time!
The BEST watch dogs ever!
Beware all "sompin's"!
Hehe....Maybelle is a pretty good gaurd dog herself:)
What about Me? Macy the Doberman!!!
I am a VERY protective dog when it comes to my family, humans and dogs. I bark and stand in front of my family if a stranger gets too close. Labs aren't known for watch dogs, but their bond with humans makes them very protective dogs.

Minpin! Minpin! Minpin! Grrrrrrrrr. No, really, we are very protective and trainable and make great watch dogs!!
It depends how train them. if you train them to never bite or jump, they probably won't be good watch dog's, I was trained like that but i'm a okay watchdog, and if you train them to kill and hunt they probably are good watch dogs.
I think that all dogs are the best. Well, I don't like pitbulls very much but there ok.
Bullmastiff all the way. We aren't called "Peerless Protectors" for nothin'. I am still watching over my mom from the bridge.
For the record, pit bulls are great dogs. Not necessarily for guarding, but for companionship (and for laughs!! they are great comedians!!). Please don't condemn a breed because of a few sensationalist news stories. Humans are way worse than any animal.
You haven't had a watch dog until you've had a Sharpei. There is nothing that happens around here that I don't see or hear. I tell my mommy everything...Nobody is gonna get away with anything without me knowing about it....
My own personal fur-lined burgalar alarm of choice is an American Eskimo. My Bailey not only doesn't let anyone on the porch without letting me know. I also know when anyone in the neighborhood slams a car door, blows their horn, or even walks up the street. He learned that when the mailman comes up onto the porch that there is a shadow that goes across the ceiling. When he hears the mail truck, he barks. Then he sits and looks up at the ceiling for the mailman's shadow. I've always said that I would have it made if I ever got robbed by the mailman! LOL!
Personally I favor the flock guarding breeds such as the anatolian shepherd, tibetian mastiff, great Pyr. All make great guard dogs... but if you want the best "Watchdog" ever... get a toy fox terrier : )
I think a good watchdog is one that gives warning to strangers on or near your property, but greets neighbors and friends with love and butt wiggles. That is what makes me a great watch dog.
Sharpei and chow-chow's make the best watchdogs. They are very protective of their person and nobody will every get near their human or home without their approval.
I on the other hand am a very bad watchdog. I am getting older, deaf and blind so I tend to bite first and figure out who you are later.
Any dog can make a great watch dog for a home. In a lot of cases a watch dog is there to make noise and alert others to the fact that someone unwanted is close. Big dogs get bum wraps because they are big and have big teeth. I had 3 little dogs growing up and they were more toward biting than big dogs.Just treat ALL dogs with kindness and they are great.
Mommy says she lubs us labs!
I am a Pomeranian and I am the best watch dog mom has ever had.
I even terrify the family German Shepherds!!
Dachshunds are the best breed in the world! I love my family more than anything in the world and would go to the ends of the earth to protect them!
American Pitbull Terriers are the best watchdogs !! Not only do they look intimidating, which usually deters people away from the get go, but they are committed to protecting you & your family regardless of danger to them !!! My female, Sativa is the one who hears people & warns us with her bark & My male, Thai usually does the scaring off & enforcing...if need be !!?!! AWESOME DOGS ALL THE WAY AROUND !!!!!!
Doberman Pinscher!
As friendly as our Great Dane is with people and children - he will guard his house, cat, people and yard with a deafening, deep "Woof!" that has scared me in the middle of the night! Plus, those long legs rear up like a horse when he's just playing.....I would hate to see what he would do to a prowler!
Lhasa Apso. They watched Buddhist temples in Tibet and made a whole bunch of noise when people came over.
Actually I heard a poodle is a better guard dog than a pitbull because they can hear better.
Min Pin's make the best watch dog. Coco is always on guard!!
brittany's make the BEST watchdogs
A Doxie of course!!!! We r small but furosus
i come from the wolves!!!!
German Shepherds all the way!
I am no one can come near my house or by property without me knowing it..
I think Bouvier's make the best watch dog. I have a German shepherd/border collie and she's too much of a timid little girl LMHO But I love her and although I know she'd probably protect me I know Bouvier's make the best watch dog
i think K9 is the best watchdog becoz they mostly used by police or investegators
Belgian Shepherd Dog - especially the Malinois as the Police Forces are now using them alongside the German Shepherd with great success and they are not suseptible to as many problems, especially hip problems. They are lighter on their feet and much faster than the German Shepherd.
A rescued mutt!
I am the best watchdog! I am the sweetest dog but bark whenever someone is outside. If one of my masters are around when someone comes inside I am sweet to them. If they come in alone I bark. When they try to hurt them when I first see them I attack. Not the complete best thing because I found out my master's brother's friend was just playing. . .so I got in trouble.
I think a Great Pyrenese makes the best gaurd dog from my experience.
English Mastiff, they notice the slightest of details and their black mask makes them look intimindating. But the creme de la creme would be the Doberman Pinscher because they were specifically breed to be a protector, whereas GSD and others alike were bred to herd sheep or what have you.
pitbulls for sure! i have two and my dogs would do anything to protect me and my kids.
I think Boxers are the best watch dogs! That's why Mommy picked me of course!!!
There;s no competition here, German Shepherd wins hands off.
Pomeranians make THE BEST watch dogs, woof!
Even though it's not my breed, mama likes the Malinois. Those are the dogs where she works and they're wonderful! And mama puts a secondary vote on dogs like my dad... the Chow. :)
Any Dog can be defeated by a Vacuum cleaner. All a burglar has to do is bring a dust buster along, and pretty much any dog will show him/her where to find all the best the home has to offer. That being said; it is ridiculous to get a dog for a watch dog unless the dog is specifically trained for that purpose.

I am a min pin and I let momma know who's good from whose bad. Also I let her know when she needs to look out the window and see whats going on or who is nearby. I may not be a protection dog but I warn momma of any impending danger.
I am the biggest baddest watch dog. I keep strangers at a good distance from momma unless she invites them into our space. I keep a pretty good eye on the neighborhood as well so let her know when something is going on that she needs to be aware of. Despite our tiny size, min pins can have a very protective nature (even though our damage would be minimal at best).
I think that ANY dog can be a great watch dog, or ANY dog can be a bad watch dog....it's all in the training.
I think that ANY dog can be a great watch dog, or ANY dog can be a bad watch dog....it's all in the training.
Any Pup can be a great guard dog. Sure, us Dobermans and the GSD's and the Rotty - we are all great at it - but so is the rescue from the humane society... WE all love our peeps and will alert them no matter what size and shape...
What kind of question is this anyway??
Hey, I'm a super watch dog. I know who's a friend or neighbour and don't bark at them. If a stranger (or the mail carrier, or a contractor (they're all strange to me!)...) comes around - I'll let my folks now with a stern WOOF (or two, or three....)! I love this opportunity to let my terrier side out!
I think that most of those "guard dogs" are stereo typed. I've noticed that Chihuahuas make better watch dogs than Shepherds. I think that Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, and terriers make the best watchdogs. Odie's a Terrier mix and he's a super watch dog. I'm fostering a Pit bull and Odie is a way better watch dog than him. Kinda a ridiculous if you ask me.
I'm a Mini Schnauzer, and I let nothing by my house without letting my parents know it! I'm the best watch dog ever!
Any dog can make a good watch dog. If the dog is very bonded and loyal to the owners and wants to protect them then they will.
Really for a watch dog all the dog needs to do is to bark and make noise to alert the owners there is a problem or an intruder on the property.
Our yorkie's bark is much bigger than her body! She will wuff up a storm when somebody comes to the door (or when somebody knocks on a door on the television).
... that said, the moment somebody comes through the door, she quits barking and runs off to bring them toys so that the visitor will play with her. Nobody will sneak up on us certainly, but if they have the courage to open the door and step inside, they'll end up with a small dog dropping stuffies and squeaky toys on their shoes.
I have three australian Cattle Dogs and they make SUCH great guard dogs, we had a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix, too ... and she was an awesome guard dog.
Doberman Pincher
Huskies definatly.Because the look makes them mean, even though it about the dog,not the breed.pitbull too make good dogs.
chihauhaus!
My two Keeshonden are excellent watchdogs, but that is as far as they go. ANY dog can alert its family to outside activity, and that is all most people need..
I am Shih Tzu hear me roar! er bark!!!
I make a great watchdog, even though my bark may be thought of as cute instead of threatening by my Dad's. I will bark nonetheless! :0)
Rhodesian Ridgebacks bated lions! What other dog does that!!
I'M A YORKIE AND I'M A GREAT WATCHDOG!! THEN PEOPLE SEE ME AND THEY LAUGH BECAUSE I'M SO LITTLE, I DON'T THINK THEY KNOW I'M FEROCIOUS!!! :)
Basenji are very alert as they are both sight and scent hounds. My angel sis Egypt heard my Mommy calling for help after she had fallen on ice and couldn't get up due to a broken elbow. Daddy was upstairs with the TV blaring, but Egypt heard and went flying off the bed (those are Daddy's words) and downstairs to the door to our garage and just stared! He went outside and found a very cold and relieved Mommy struggling and slipping on an ice patch. When I hear or see something out of the ordinary, I make sure I am between it and my Mommy. Absolutely nothing can sneak up on me!!!
My dobermans were gentle giants until someone strange appeared. They would not let him inside until one of the family came to the door. They are wonderful pet. They are so intelligent that training is easy.
Basset Hounds!!!!
I say shelties make the best watch dogs! Nothing gets by a sheltie!
Pomeranians are great! whenever someone so much as steps one foot on our property I start going crazy! Pomeranians are probably not the best watch dogs but I'm a good one!
I Say Pit Bull's or Staffordshire Bull Terrier's. And Shiba Inu's! -tieran
i own an australian shepherd Cody he is an amazeing dog of almost 2 years old and anytime he hears somethin he always alerts us and if somebody tries to hurt me or my family he will protect us by barking at the person to tri to scare them
shih tzus!!
Me, I'm a mix with three dogs, great pyrenees, rottweiler and german shepherd. Rottweiler and german shepherd was there, but I can't cut myself in half. I'd have to sat both rottweilers and german sheperds. Why? Cause I am one!
My Big brother is all for show! I'm the real watchdog of the house! I'm 9lbs of attitude, he's just 135lbs of Goofyness!!
