PETA is ridiculous, I'm glad they have no votes. They take everything too far, and make a terrible name for legit animal rights groups. Anything extreme, one side or the other, is bad.
We support:
DEFENDERS OF ANIMAL RIGHTS, INC.
14412 Old York Road Phoenix, MD 21131
(non-profit organization)
They take in unwanted and injured animals, adopt out animals that can be adopted and do amazing work for such a small organization.
The ASPCA went to bat fot the Michael Vick dogs - when other so called humane organization reps said that those dogs should be euthanized, the ASPCA and a few other groups, BAD RAP, RECYCLED LOVE, BEST FRIENDS, asked the judge to give them a chance. We've all heard of the success stories. God bless them and that judge!
I admire all of them. They are all trying their best, they sont have much to work with and are always understaffed, but they try!
WTF, PETA, ewww. SPCA or ASPCA.
The ASPCA appears to be somewhere in-between animal welfare and animal rights, but I'm glad to see they got the majority of the votes, HSUS and PeTA are insane and have hired ALF to do acts of eco terrorism (risking the safety of humans as well) for their agendas, they also lie about where your donations go and support BSL in various forms (PeTA is more for all-out bans while HSUS is more for mandatory altering of ALL "pit bulls" in any given place, but it still accomplishes the same thing, no more dogs of certain breeds). I chose other, my vote goes for Best Friends Animal Society and Sanctuary and the No Kill Advocacy Center, both animal welfare groups.
That's crazy! I support NONE of these. They are all a threat to us.... Give me one that will defend human rights when it comes to their pets!
We cry every time we see the ASPCA commercials. Mom has money taken out automatically every month to help those animals.
I too am glad that PETA and HSUS are in the minority.
I most support local no-kill shelters, because they do so much for animals in the community and help find great homes for great pets. I've had wonderful experiences with many of them. But I also love the SPCA :)
These comments are very informative. Thank you all.
I too am happy to see PETA and HSUS will the fewest votes. Out of the options above SPCA is definitely the top choice in my opinion, and I'm glad so many other Dogsters feel the same.
Of course, supporting your local rescues and shelters is right up there with the top choice. =)
Thanks other Dogsters for being awesome!
Let's just say that if someone stands up for animal rights, I'm right there with them. But I do love my local no-kill shelter, the SBACC (www.sbacc.org). But can someone tell me what PETA and HSUS and WTF are??
i think a place called hevanly creatures the spca lets ur dog stay for 1 night and if u dont claim it it gets killed so i hate the spca
I say the SPCA, I volunteer there and it's really cool to see the difference it makes in my community. I do like the other local shelters to but SPCA is my favorite.
Wow...what a touchy subject! PETA is so contoversial and HSUS has made some very bad decisions (their unwillingness to help rahabilitate the Pitbulls rescued from Michael Vick's & their promotion of him now that he is out of jail). I think that there are some good things about the SPCA & the WWF
I prefer to support local animal welfare groups, or groups like Best Friends who really have their prioities right. I e-mailed Best Friends about a Pitbull needing rescued and they responded personally even though they get hundreds of such e-mails.
Then again, I e-mailed the American Humane Society & the ASPCA about a concern I have and didn't a peep back from them.
Lulu,
You asked: "But can someone tell me what PETA and HSUS and WTF are??"
PETA = People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - considered very radical group with a checkered record of over the top demonstrations - throwing blood on people wearing fur & other such activities. They were very instrumental in raising public awareness and outrage against animal testing in laboratories though. They do some good things.
HSUS = Humane Society of the United States - they became unpopular by many recently with their unwillingness to help rehabilitate the Pit Bulls rescued from Michael Vick's & their promotion of him now that he is out of jail.
WWF = World Wildlife Federation
SPCA = Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (not to be confused with the ASPCA)
My Auntie C is collecting pennies for the critters at the local SPCA, COOPERS FOR CRITTERS! I am from the SPCA.
Peta is bad and supports bsl and goes to far.
Humane Society of the united states LIES about where there money goes and they are NOT the same thing as the humane society but they try to make people think they are so they get money. Wwf is against hunting. So I picked other.
SPCA/Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a generic name, like "Humane Society," and without any other qualification it doesn't refer to one particular organization, but any one of the thousands that use that name in the US and elsewhere.
Maybe the poll designer meant the ASPCA, the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which I do support--certainly more than anything else on that list!
The ASPCA is based in New York - it's NOT the "national SPCA." Support your local SPCA or Humane Society!
Glad to see so much support foir SPCA. And the WWF is nice too. Also glad that others see the sham that PETA is. I can't take them seriously because they act like such idiots. They really turn people off acting like self-righteous radicals. YAY SPCA.

Well we have none of those here but the UK has their own one the
RSPCA
We do what we can to support our local shelters. At a National level any of these animal rights groups are questionable as to how they spend their funds. HSUS for example can't ever tell us what or where their funds go except to lobby for their own agenda.
We'll stay at the local level & do what we can to help.
ASPCA because they seem to care more about animal welfare and less about the almighty dollar. Not only do they physically help animals they go out to find the abusers and are instrumental in trying to get stricter laws passed. Kudos to ASPCA.
I support none of these. They are all bad organizations in their own ways, they all lie to the public and are more concerned with their financial bottom line.
Taser
We definately support the ASPCA. They are the only one of these who are an animal welfare organization, rather than an animal "rights" organization. They do help animals. The others are crazy, they do not help animals they hurt.
:)) I didn't know what WWF standed for, I was thinking, since when is the World Wrestling Federation an Animal Rights group?" :))
I do support the SPCA, but there is a wonderful Cairn resuce group Col Porter. They are doing so much good for Cairns and Cairn mixs. from resuce, health and surgery for dogs in need and fostering and placement in furever homes for the wonderful and loving little dogs...
Correction Col Potter
I love the SPCA. That's where my parents adopted me from. Woofs! Boo
We like them all, but out of the groups listed, our local SPCA is our most admired because they have the least amount of funding to handle case-by-case everyday cases of overpopulation, problems that arise locally and educating the general public, and they are the ones that will come to our aid if a fire breaks out in the area. (we saw them in action last year in our area and they were outstanding)
We also respect and admire the HSUS and Best Friends Animal Society (no more homeless pets), and we think PETA efforts are important even though not very popular with everyone. WWF sends too many dumb gifts (that's been our experience) but they fight for seal pup and elephant rights, etc!
Hey, any agency interested in the welfare of animals gets an A+++ in our book! Unless they are willing to hurt people to make their point (those radical people are really misguided)!
Henry and his posse
i think that the RSPCA (which is the Australian version of SPCA) does a great job of taking care of sick and injured animals but also does the AWL ( Animal Welfare League which is also Australian )
I like WWF and the (O)SPCA. :)
PETA however I coudl care less for, a bunch of hypocrites.
I like them all!! My dad likes sertain and spacific groups like RAGofAZ. Rescue a Golden of Arizona.

The only one of the selections that definitely does NOT have my support is PETA. They have given those of use who support animal rights and welfare a bad name. These people go way beyond reasonable. They offend the very people they hope to attract to their cause.
I support local groups.
I like to see the difference made right here in my community.
I support SPCA. I'm a long time volunteer at my local SPCA in Dublin, CA. They have high standards, compassionate staff, respectable rules and policies, etc. I also have a partnership with my SPCA in support of its Club Second Chance program, in which senior, disabled, special-needs dogs and cats get a chance at finding forever homes. Second chance adopters get a big discount in my dog shop, http://www.siriusrepublic.com.
AR groups need to be banned, stop supporting their own pockets. Not one animal gets help from AR groups. local shelters & rescue get nothing, By the way not all those groups are AR groups, The animal Welfare groups are worthy HSUS & PETA are worthless

Sorry don't know any of these. We support RSPCA over here in England.

Our family supports No More Homeless Pets, and more specifically Greyhound Pets of America, along with other retired racing greyhound adoption groups such as Halfway Home for Hounds, GALT, Second Chance, and the hundreds of other groups that dedicate themselves to finding pet homes for retired racers.
We work with a local group that is targeting low-cost, high volume spay and neuter services for the community (Collier Spay Neuter Clinic). I joined the board a few months ago because I feel that working on the issue hands on is an effective way for me to initiate positive outcomes. I used to support many of the groups in the poll with donations, but now my time and money go to working with this group. I do agree with most of the other Dogster folks that some of those organizations in the poll have left much to be desired. I champion anyone who truly supports, donates, or volunteers for any organization that genuinely has a clear mission to directly help the animals.
I like Noah's Wish best, for the response to animals after a disaster. I also help others that are smaller and have less corporate fundraising ability than those you list.
The SPCA has a long history of positive treatment of animals. Some of the others are questionable.
PETA is evil.
"PETA IS RIDICULOUS"
I agree with that. -claps- well said. No but seriously, when they go and throw flour on Lindsey Lohan OR go and poison dogs with Anti-freeze at the westminster, i think thats Just really Stupid.
PETA is Epic Fail.
I Support The SPCA (:
PETA = Epic Fail.
While I admire our local SPCA (they offer free spay/neuter services for Pit Bulls and Pit mixes--yay!!) I financially support a few local independent rescue groups. I especially like to support Muttville (senior dog rescue), BADRAP (Pit Bull rescue & anti-BSL), and Home At Last, a great local all-breed rescue.
Oh, and I'll join the anti-PETA chorus. Any group that lies and euthanizes animals because they believe it's better than being in a shelter is, well, I can't use those kinds of words here...
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
Pasado's Safe Haven
Pigs Peace Sanctuary
Any reputable rescue, really.
I don't like PETA (I find their tactics silly, counterproductive, and in many cases, sexist). However, I find the knee jerk reactions against animal rights organizations thoughtless and absurd. Honestly, animals are capable of suffering. We all know that, right? Pigs in slaughterhouses suffer. For a moment of your life, just stop and imagine what these creatures are going through. You may still want to eat them. You may not care. That's normal, and I'm not going to judge or debate you for that. ...but please stop dismissing those of us who do feel compassion beyond the norm as crazy. We aren't. We're normal people living normal lives with normal friends (most of whom are not AR people). We live, love, work, and contrary to popular belief, endure much more criticism than we dish out. We just happen to feel compassion for creatures most don't. That's all.
I'd like to add that I understand certain unpopularities surrounding BSL (which I adamantly oppose) and the Vick case. I too love Best Friends Sanctuary!
We support Best Friends...what they do for all animals is just incredible:)
Tails of the Tundra
Here on Long Island we have the North Shore Animal League... It is a wonderful place and it help find 100eds of dogs and cats find furever homes...
Fast Friends, the people who rehabbed the vick dogs. ;)
I love and support the no-kill shelters in my area as they struggle even more than kill shelters. I also support my local SPCA.
i read a good article that talks about the aspca and other organization making up percentages of homeless pets and pretty much making owning a pet much harder in the future. it was on adbadog.com and it talks how breeders should not be ashamed if there responsible but these organization make it seem a shameful business. article also points out that the number of animals arriving at a shelter every year actually decreases but you wont here that.

BADRAP, love them.
None of the above... support your LOCAL shelters, humane societies and rescue groups.
I'll join in on the PETA = epic fail
At the root of PETA, there is the goal that there will be no pet ownership. They are also some of the biggest hypocrites I've ever seen.
Considering they believe all Pitt Bulls, Staffies, etc. do not deserve to live because they are what they are, they really have no right to make halocaust references in their campaigns.
i dont really like the animal shelters but if its no kill im ok with it. For people who want to help dogs in animal shelters i would suggest going to freekibble.com
Anything but PETA. They are the most hyprocit animal rights group in the world. Inapropriated, terroristic, extremist - they have killed more animals than save them. Plus it's totally ridiculous how they give little kids comics full of blood and malicious, saying "your mommy kills animals!" (WITHOUT the parents knowing) and dare to compare a dying child w cancer to a lab rat.
*_*
They do alot for the wellfare of animals.
Peta puts down animals for no reason go SPCA they still dont try to save fighting pitbulls like bestfriends in utah
if petas crazy about obama killing a fly why do they kill dogs and cats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
