I think we could 'begin' to forgive him if he set up a large 'continuing' fund for care and adoption of abused animals.

I'm not sure what the "2nd chance" is for. To ever have the privilege of having animals again? Absolutely not! To have the chance to "make things right" by using his money to better the lives of abused and neglected animals everywhere and to educate on the atrosities of dog fighting...absolutely!

I think it's odd that the question of forgives keeps coming up. Michael Vick plead NOT GUILTY to animal charges. He did not spend one day in jail for animal abuse or cruelty charges. Michael Vick went to jail for racketeering. So how do you forgive someone who doesn't even think they did anything wrong?!!!!

I would like to believe he truly is sorry, but I have a hard time with that. I think he is more sorry for himself and thinks if he shows he is "sorry" then he will be accepted back to the NFL and he can get his life (and money) back. I hate feeling this pessimistic, but that's how I feel.

Voted "other".
What he did was terrible, and it'll take a lot of time--if ever--before he'll get to be trusted again, but a second chance is reasonable within limits. Depending, of course, on what is meant by a "second chance". Should he be given full rights back? No. Should he be trusted with dogs? Not completely.
I can't make a clear judgment since only hearing about this over the internet makes it impossible to make an accurate grab at his true motives. If he's truly sorry, I'm ready and willing to forgive him. Already have in fact. I don't hate him, just what he did. I will reiterate that that doesn't mean that I think that he should come back as a fully-trusted individual. That is just common sense. He may be tricking people so he can go back to his low lifestyle.

Why SHOULD he be given a second chance ?
I have never heared of him but read about it on the dog blog and it is just awful.
He should never be aloud another animal again.
Theres no point if he is just going to be cruel to it.

But however if he truly is sorry and wants another dog I think instead of him NEVER having an dog I think that the animal police should check up on the dogs daily and if anything seems out of the ordinary they should take the dogs away.

I agree that all this is bad but doesn't everyone deserve a second chance ?

Only Michael Vick knows if he is really sorry, but let the HSUS take him for all he's worth and use him as a poster child to speak out for all that is wrong with dog fighting. Yes, he's "been there and done that" and his role in all this is truly reprehensible, but if he can prevent even just one person from getting into dog fighting, that's one person and it's a start. You can't change the past so let's just move forward. As far as his career with the NFL, I don't think so.

I'm no stonecaster and I believe Vick deserves forgiveness. However, TRUST is the issue here. Can we trust Vick to treat "lesser" beings with respect and honor? Would he be willing to prove he is capable of public trust when it comes to valuing the sanctify of life?
Would he be willing give his time working with the neediest and most disadvantaged pets?...in a shelter?...in rescue?....fostering?....helping the sorrowed?

Only his future track record will tell the tale of his trustworthiness. Will it be a message of inspiration for our children? Or will he be remembered as just another self-centered football jerk?

He should be watched carefully for his second chance.People do change but some do not. They should be allowed to change if they want to.He still should be watched and keep a record of his behavior to see how he handles working for animals, before he is cut loose on his own.

I've observed in the past that once an abuser always an abuser. So with that being said I think if he's given a second chance it should come with the Strictest guidelines and constant supervision and should NEVER be allowed to own any kind of pet. I also don't feel he should be allowed to play for the NFL ever again. He should have to support the Humane Society for life and as well as community service surpervised. We need to start standing up and speaking our minds for these helpless victims and make drastice changes as well as stiffer penalites for the crimes these people commit. He had a choice and he knew what was right and wrong, he made his choice and now he should be held responsible for his actions.

There are 2 questions here..1) Forgive 2) 2nd Chance

Dog owners can forgive because they have big hearts. The 2nd chance for what?! Vick is free to play football providing there is a city, team and owner willing to take him.

If Vick abandoned football entirely to dedicate his life to helping others (NOT himself) then he will redeem himself in society.

That is my 2 barks...arf! arf!

If he is truely remorseful for his actions, he can be used to speak to people about the horrors and the dangers that dog-fighting puts innocent dogs through. He can be a positive voice for HSUS in the fight against dog-fighting and the people who run these horrible underground rings.

A second chance at what? Dog ownership? Certainly not. Being a role model? Nope. Playing football? I guess--if anyone will have him. I certainly won't root for that team though. I think what he's doing now is just reward....he's having to work hard every day like the rest of us.

I think that everyone needs to leave him alone. Sure, he did some bad things in the past, but everyone has something that they didnt like in their past. How would you feel if people judged you for what you did a long time ago. Who here actually knows Michael Vick? And i mean actually KNOW him?? If you do KNOW him, then you can judge him, but if you dont, you have no right to. He knows if he's actually sorry, but none of you do. Leave the poor guy alone!

While we in our pack don't like and don't approve of what Michael Vick did, we think he does deserve another chance. Look, I'm a pit bull and if I bit someone I would hope that humans would give me another chance. If we are willing to rehabilitate a dog - doesn't a human deserve another chance too?

I think rehabilitation of criminals after a crime is very important to a better society. So many criminals are repeat offenders because they are not properly rehabilitated into society after serving.

Whilst I condemn his past actions as horrible, I believe that he can learn from his mistakes and be a positive influence on our society. As a society we should give him that chance and hold him to it.

Like I've already said, this goes way back to when he was a child & exposed to that type of environment he grew up in. Here in the "hood", we hear of this often. I know first hand, what goes down & it is terrible. No matter what anyone says or does, won't stop it all from happening.
But, he should do what he can to make it all right again. Even if that means, some won't agree with it. Peace..

He's said to have pled not guilty, that sounds like he doesn't even feel he is guilty. Rather than him wanting ever one to forgive because it is asked, how about is he gets out and educated the 'neighborhoods he grew up in where dog fighting is common place and educate them on it being wrong? As well as the general public let alone donating to the dogs that were rescused and to the shlters and people that helped. I think people would forgive him more that way.

He is only human. We all make mistakes. But to allow the man to have another pet of any kind would be criminal as far as I am concerned. I feel like dogs are one of the greatest gifts that God has given to us. You can't ask for a more loving companion than a dog and then for someone to do what he did to all those poor dogs -- well, as far as I am concerned he certainly did NOT get what he deserved and should never be allowed to have another pet of any kind.

I totally agree with Cisco! He HAS to ask for forgiveness in order to get back to making millions. I believe God can and does change hearts. I will pray for him and I sure hope he really feels horrible for what he did. If he really does have a change of heart, he is going to have a hard time living with what he did. It WAS brutal and caused an enormous amount of pain...I can't believe a human can be this cruel....sadly, it happens!
Barked by: Jessica

May 28th 2009 at 6:01 pm

What he did is unimaginable and there is no excuse for it. But I think if we give him a second chance rather than "throw the book" at him then he might actually believe that what he did was wrong and be able to reach out to his peers and children alike to let them know by experience that it is wrong to do what he did. It's so hard to even think of giving him a chance myself because I love animals so much. But I do have hope that this will be a good chance to bring this topic to a mainstream level to make people aware of what is going on in the world and maybe just be able to start a "revolution" per say to end it.

Would you be put in jail for that? Just because he is a 'famous' football player so what? He deserves to get done to him as he did to them. See how he likes it. Did them Poor dogs get a second chance? No, they were thrown in the fight and if they didn't die there, him or someone made sure they were dead.

Yea, people can change, but FIRST you must be willing to admit what you did wrong, not DENY it and then ask for forgiveness.

Forgiveness, yes. 2nd chance, it depends on what that means. Id o not think that he deserves to be a multimillion dollar NFL player ever again. If he is so concerend about preventing young people from making the same mistakes he did then he should be a coach for a youth team where he can prevent them from growing up to think that harming animals is o.k. He can earn an average income like the majority of us, mow his own lawn, pinch pennies like the rest of us who live by the rules and are not rewarded for it.

I just had this discussion with my husband and he actually changed my mind from no way to other. Koby Briant was charged with rape, did time, lost endorsements, but there was enough people (I guess me being one of them) who kept thinking....what was she thinking was really going to happen at 3am in the guys room. I am not being judemental but with people you can question there motive, smartness, etc. He was drunk, she was drunk...so he came back people forgot, hegot his indorsements back, etc.
With Dogs there is no question. They love and want to be loved. The man did cruel, inhuman things that make me question his sanity (ENJOYING TORTURING ANIMALS!) However, under the laws today he did his time. He lost everything along with his respectability as a human being. However, like all men who get out of prision he deserves to be able to make a living in any non-legal way that does not have Fellony as a "Cannot work here" rule. I don't take this lightly. My puppies are my childern and if someone ever hurt them I would probably do unto them what they did to my furry kid. Hell is nothing compared to a momma looking out for her kids. Honestly even though he is a good player I can't wait to see if someone actually hires him back to play ball.

I would not want such a man around my pets, nor do I think he should be allowed to work directly with animals until he is able to really prove he is sorry and wants to make a difference. I think he is sorry he got caught, and is trying to make the NFL people believe he is sorry so he can get back in. I do not think he should be allowed to work directly with the dogs. If he can stick with this program, and I mean for years not just a year, maybe he can prove himself to worthy of a second chance at something. I do not think he should be allowed to be a role model for our youth, until such time as he can prove he is truly sorry and a changed man.

MIchael Vick is a repeat offender who has been in trouble before for other offenses which he then publically lied about (involving drugs). This is not a person who commited a random non-violent crime. He brutally killed dogs and was highly involved in a lifestyle that condoned dog fighting. I find it hard to believe he is legitimately remorseful. The speeches Vick has given in the past were clearly rehearsed and written down for him. He does not appear to speak from the heart or realize that dog fighting may be practiced in some circles, but that does not make it right. As a public figure, he does not need to be playing a professional sport nor does he need to be endorsing any product. I don't think he has much character at all. He can move on with his life, but I don't think he should expect people to blindly overlook the choices he has made. Vick knowingly did something viscious and disturbing - it's not easily forgotten.

Curley Joe & Agnes - Amen.

It took me decades to not judge people for the ills that they do and to forgive them. I used to be very judgemental and quick to pull the trigger on those that did wrong. In my old days, Vick would have been bleep, bleep, bleep, in my mind.

Whether we admit it or not, we all do wrong during our life's journey. Some worse than others. What matters IN THE END is DO WE LEARN from our mistakes???? I still admit to making mistakes and feel that I am only a failure if I don't learn from my mistakes.

Give Vick a chance to learn from his horrible mistakes before we continue our judgement. That is what is asked of us. Vicke may have "learned from his mistakes" or he may "have a way to go", but give him a chance to learn before we continue pursecuting him.

I am not forturnate to have my own children but my rescues pups and cat are my kids and I love them with all of my heart. My husband and I use our free time and funds to help our favorite rescue groups.

Mom always brought us up to realize that we had only failed ourselves when we did NOT LEARN from our mistakes. I'm finally, after 4 decades, learning that Mom's word's make sense. Simply, if you "learn from your mistakes" then in the end you are not a failure.

No. He should not be trusted with another dog. What he did was CRUEL! If he wants to help prevent other people from dog fighting by sharing his story then by all means do so but the law should not let him have another dog ever.

As a victim of abuse myself, I cannot forgive Vick. Is he sorry? I don't think so. As Judge Judy says, "Don't pee on my leg and then tell me it is raining!" Someone who does what he did is VERY sick. I am told that such sick people cannot be cured because they lack basic human emotions that make them sensitive to the feelings of other beings. I hope the agency he is working with does not ever leave him alone with any of their animals.

PLEASE MAKE SURE HE NEVER GETS THE HONOR OF OWNING ANY PET. Someone else said here that maybe he could own a goldfish. What he probably would do would be to get two Siamese Fighting Fish and put them into a bowl together to watch them fight.

Vick deserves no less than a beating just before death.

The only thing he's sorry about it losing money and getting caught. He deserves no less than a brutal beating then tossed of a bridge to die or stuff underneath other broken bodies to die with no chance of escape. This is the nicest way for me to put how I feel.

Forgiveness for what exactly?! Yes, we should allow him to continue to try to earn a living, but (1) he should NEVER be allowed anywhere near any sort of animal, (2) he should never be allowed to own any sort of animal, and (3) he needs to give some sort of charitable donation to prevent dog fighting. Yes, he must pay for the costs of living for the dogs that remain, but I don't beleive he has ever had to pay anything for the dogs he's killed.

I'm not sure that some one who is that cruel can ever be rehabilitated. There is such an evilness that is inside of them. Anyone who could hurt a poor defenseless animal, small child etc.etc who would give them such love and loyalty is just plain evil. sick sick sick !!

I agree with Michele H.

He should donate a nice healthy sum of $$ each year for abused and abandoned dogs that they recieve health care, and rehab so they can place in a furever home.

Some drunk drivers that come out of jail have to write a check every week for the rest of their lives to the surviving family if the person they killed. He should have to do the same. He's got the cash that he's going throw away on nothing, let him put it to some good use.

He is supposed help with pets, as a consequence to his actions. I hope it is supervised. He does not need to own and animal, they deserve sooo much more than the abuse his other dogs endured.

We feel that this guy could see,( as anyone w/ a fraction of a brain), that dogs were hurt terribly during these horrible displays of humans being bloodthirsty.
If he is truly sorry, he will give a substantial amount of not only money, but his time, in order to make this world a better place for dogs. Especially the ones that are throwaways. If he can't do this, no he should not be forgiven.
There's still a mess to be cleaned up. He better get on with it

I think he should be given a second chance, but be made to do 1000 hours of community service working with the SPCA or other such organization where he will learn the humane care of animals.

There are some things that are so degenerate and reprehensible that there are no second chances. Michael Vick is a sociopathic personality. He's not sorry about what he did. He's only sorry that he was caught. Vick is humanity at it's worst, and his actions require permanent social censure.

Absolutely not! And I will no longer support the HSUS in any way, shape or form if they proceed in offering this inhumane butcher a vehicle in which to whitewash his past so he can return to professional football.

I don't think he should ever own a dog or any pet for that matter for the rest of his life. I am a APBT & American Bulldog owner and I would put myself in harms way before I would let one of my furbabies get hurt.

As extremely upset as I was when I first learned about the horrible events that Michael Vick caused, I do believe every person deserves a second chance. HOWEVER, if he repeats his past or is caught in any animal predicament I believe he should be stamped as unforgiveable or unable to rehabilitate.
But as he did serve his time and has done everything that the court has asked him to, that to me shows his sincere regret in what he caused.

Why does everyone tell people not to forgive Michael vick.He is a good person but he did fight dogs.He does not deserve to be picked on after he gets out of jail. That is like you being picked on after getting out of jail.I dont like when people are mean to other people we are all humans and we should forgive and get along well with others.

We aren't picking on him (Michael Vick).... He doesn't deserve to have a 2nd chance. It's as simple as that. Do you think that he deserves to have a chance to own animals again? He pled not guilty....Does he really not understand what he did wrong? I agree that we should forgive people and were all humans and we should get along with others...but there's a limit. Abusing animals isn't a matter to be taken lightly. The horrific people out there who do it need to go to jail for the rest of their life, and then they need to go to hell. Abusing an animal is just like abusing a person. They are living, breathing creatures, and (most) are beautiful. This man is horrible and doesn't deserve to own any more dogs. Or pets. In his life.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

he is asking for a second chance. but did he give all of these dogs a second chance? no he killed them when they fought bad, made them test vicious dogs when they couldn't defendthemselves and abused them. now, not many of theses dogs will forget the tragic events earlier in life and Vick shouldn't say "he is sorry" when we all know that this is a big fat lie. he did what he did and he can not undo all of these horrible cruelties. so from all that i have written, my answer is he should be in the NFL when hell freezes over.

He's done his time, and paid his fines for the crime. How long does a person have to suffer from a mistake? God forbid if you do a crime and then still be condemned after you've made amends to whomever you've hurt.

Listen I think he has to prove he is sorry. Like work with the people to bust up the dog fighting. Go to schools and educate the kids on how bad it is for the dogs and the people when dogs fight.

Even after a bust most of the dogs have to be put down because they are way too mean to be a good dog for someone. That is the saddest part.

Even in training a dog they send in a dog who cannot fight back. Maybe his mouth is taped shut. That dog has to be destroyed. Just so some people can get their fun on. That is so bad.

I would like to tape their hands behind them and tape up their mouth and send them into a ring to be slaughtered by another man. With everyone cheering him on and you are dying. How would it feel then? Would you feel proud?

Even after you do a crime people will not trust you until you can prove you have changed. Your word is not good enough. People have been lied to so much in this world, that they trust no one until the show that they can be trusted.

Yes I believe in Second chances. Jesus gives us all a second chance. All you have to do for HIM is believe in HIM. HE can see inside our souls too. Jesus knows if we are telling the truth.

Everyone else has to prove it.

Ditto Winston XXLP! I couldn't agree more. Basically what mom said when the HSUS called for a monthly contribution last week.

Also to Hershey. You are so gorgeous. How would you like those beautiful long ears ripped to shreds by a fighting dog? Cockers are a breed of choice in my area for bait. Why? Because of the long ears. All people deserve a second chance? Well that may depend on the offense. Like purse snatching.

This is a cruel, vicious crime that maims and kills and has no regard for life. Just green paper, reputation and notoriety. Moms says him and all other like him can kiss her rosy red you know what!
