BennyBix is definitely my fur baby. He runs to me when he's upset, counts on me to entertain him, and to provide his daily bully stick. but most of all, he counts on me to take good care of him and keep him safe.

I think of all my dogs as my kids...and in fact refer to them as the kids!
All dogs should be treated as family members and in this house they truly are.

I have been entrusted to love, feed and care for my dogs. I admit that I do consider them my kids, but are you not only a parent but a guardian of your children? I try to see that they get the best of everything in regards to food and health care. I am probably much more concerned with the quality of their food than I am with mine! They are my best buddies. So it would be hard to really define the difference in children, guardian, best friend, etc.

Very hard choice between mommy or best friend. I do consider Luna a mom because if she has to lay down the rules, she does, but I also consider Lu my bff because I am normally a good dog and most of the time mommy doesn't have to be too harsh on me so we spend most of the time playing like bff rather than training to be a good boy.

Woof! Momma is the ultimate hunter, and therefore also our Pack Leader! She must know the best places to hunt, because she brings home bacon, eggs, beef, pork, chicken, fish, rice and kibble! She also makes sure we get our baths, exercise and even makes sure we take our medicine when we need it! (She knows how to make it yummy for us too!) And, she also takes time to teach us, and work with us so that we are smart and well behaved!

She gets big hugs from me - and believe me, I snuggle in just like a baby of the 2-legged variety!
Momma helped me get born alive too! I know that I wouldn't be here, happy, healthy and alive today if it weren't for Momma!

Momma may not be my 'biological mother', but that doesn't change the fact that she does all the things a Momma does for any of her babies!

I chose guardian because I am ultimately my dog's owner, guardian, and leader. In return, she is my friend and teacher. As a trainer, it's difficult to resist addressing the idea of animals as children and the plethora of problems that arise in human-animal relationships as a result of us silly humans assigning human traits, human emotion, and human motivations to the animal. A dog is a dog and must be respected for its unique set of instincts and view of the world. What a blessing to have them in our lives and be able to learn from their perspectives, which are so different from ours.

Barked by: Daddy (Dogster Member)

April 29th 2009 at 11:01 am

I sometimes jokingly call myself a "pet mom", but I do not see my dogs as humans or children or treat them as such, because they have different needs than humans do and spoiling a dog and treating them like a baby can have disastrous, even dangerous results. But I love my pets like human family members, they live indoors and are provided regular health care, diets catering to each one's special needs and requirements, etc. I guess I consider myself sort of a combination between caretaker, parent, and owner all rolled into one. I like the term "owner" for legal reasons because it gives us the right to make our own decisions in regards the health of our dogs, but I don't generally refer to myself as a dog owner in non-legal terms because it makes me feel like they're being talked about as mere property.
Barked by: Dara (Dogster Member)

April 29th 2009 at 11:58 am

I see myself as the pack leader to Dara, for other people I refer to myself as Dara's Mom. While I certainly treat him well and he's definately got a better life with me than he did in the kennels I don't believe treating him like a human wouldn't be of benefit to either of us. I have known dogs who are treated like children and who have behavioral issues because of it. I love Dara and realise that part of that is relating to him in a way that is familliar to him.

I am definitely mommy to my doggiebabies, but beyond that Diesel is and will always be my soulmate, soul twin, whatever you want to call it. I am incomplete without him. I don't feel whole since he is gone. I treat my dogs with respect, but also show them in a loving way how to behave in a human world. In that sense I guess I become the guardian/pack leader, but it really isn't as cold as that sounds. We have a little rednose pit mix now and he needs a little more guidance than Diesel did!

Although I refer to them as my second generation of children, I think guardian describes the relationship best. I play with them as a mother plays with her kids, I rely on their companionship as a best friend. Owner simply implies that dogs are objects.

As a guardian, I am responsible to be all things to them, responsible to meet all their physical and vet needs, and responsible to make my home the best place in the world for my gang.

Mom thinks of me as a son. She's never had kids which makes that mom/son relationship even more bonded. I, being deaf, really like to see my mom at all times if possible (since I can't hear her) and that means being around her pretty all the time. She takes me with her whenever she leaves the house and wouldn't dream of leaving me at home alone. Yup, I'd say she's my mom and I'm her kid.

They are my kids!! I take offense when other people see them as "animals" They go on vacation with us, sleep with us, eat with us. That's how it should be. Someone said to me this weekend that she wouldn't have put a pacemaker in her "dog" when she knew two weeks ago my husband and I did. She told me that I should have put my little girl down because it was her "time". That is so wrong. My little girl would've died 2 months ago if my husband and I didn't do whatever we could to help her. Ignorance really bothers me. I've had my kids for over ten years and money is no object when it comes to their well being!!! My thought is..dogs are unconditional love, children are not. There shouldn't be an attitude that..."when you have children, things will change." I guarantee they will not.

Don't get me wrong, I know they are animals, but they are so much more than pets. And to be honest, they are a lot more loyal, and loving that some people in my family (humans) Lol. As sad as that is.

It varies- Right now Louie is in his pup stage so it's more like a parental relationship- Once he gets older though- It seems like more of a best friend relationship- MonCoeur my eldest pup is so wise- It feels funny to treat him like a child- He's definitely a best friend in my eyes- Well like family- :)

Now, first DOGS, cats, small animals aren't HUMAN, yes i refer to myself in front of my pets AS mom and dad, BUT, I am first and formost an owner, they aren't my "kids" yes sometimes i call them that.. But I can distingish between the two. WE are exscepting a HUMAN baby in about 3 or 4 months. THAT our KID, dogs are K-9s. Cats are FELINES! they aren't even close to being related to OUR species.

Yes, I do understand about the relationship between dogs and ppls, I have been showing, handling, training dogs since I was 8! I am now 37.

I know the difference.

maui is my fur daughter i love her to bits but me being in position as pawrent puts me in control not her my dad even said when he got her she was the closest he was going to see to a grand child if i saw her as anything less in my life would put me lower down the pack as equal or less than her and she would take advantage at least by me seing me as mum means my word is final and she dosent chalenge for a higher position in the pack

There needs to be an all of the above choice or allow multiple responses. I am my dog's guardian, owner, best friend, and mother. If dog's weren't considered property in my state I would take owner off. I am responsible for teaching them how to behave in a human dominated society which makes me a parent. We share our adventures which makes them my best friends and I am entrusted with they medical and mental care which makes me a guardian.

I see my girls as definitely my furbabies. My dog and my 2 cats and even the ones in Heaven

I see myself as their mom why? Because they are my children they are family. I get sick and tired of people around here saying You need to stop putting them first. I feel like screaming listen would you ignore your child and eat yourself if there wasn't enough food in the house? I've asked that before and I hear it's not the same thing

Well the news is it is the same thing specially when you dont' have kids of your own.

I would rather go hungry myself then my babies go hungry or without medical treatment when needed.

They are my furdaughters and that's how I see it and how I will always see it

My furry family is an important part of our pack , they are our faithfull friends who never betray us like humans do.They are there when you cry and when you soundly sleep they are your protectors and always glad to see you no matter what. They are my fur baby's and I love all 4 of them.

Everyone says Suki is my baby, and she is, but I more refer to her as my best friend than my child. Could be that she's the one who was always there for me, much more so than any of my humans friends, so we bonded more on a friendship way than a parent-child way.

Friendship, NOT Alpha, is essential to build a loving and trusting relationship between you and your dog. If your dog doesn't like you or trust you, it will not want to do anything for you? That's why so many dogs are returned to shelters.

You must take the time to learn what your dog likes and dislikes. Then you can use these "likes" as a reward during training when it does the behaivours that make you happy.

An initial bonding period BEFORE you begin training (right after you get your dog whenever possible) will create three important things:

You will get to know your pets personalty, develop a positive relationship, and, you will build the trust that is needed to lay a solid foundation for a life long compainionship.

I firmly believe that a dog will respect and love you truly if you show him or her the same love and respect. My dog absolutely trusts me 100 %. I know that because when I bathe him or do something that I know he doesn't like, he never snaps at me. I can take treats out of his mouth if I want to. I know he respects me, but more important to me is that he trusts me. I'd rather he trust and love me than respect me.

Momy? ahah. She's not a human, people, neither are your pooches!
I probabilly ain't part of her family because I don't have tready curly fur covering my body and bark... And I wouldn't go as dramatic as "Owner of Heart" or "Guardian".
I'm not really those creepy people who live cramped with a dog and consideer it their "best friends".
I guess I'm just the doggy-friendly girl who takes cute pics of her!

Hmmm, I guess I view my dog as a special, unique member of my household. No, she's not human, and I don't treat her as such.....She's a living, breathing collectible that I treasure and care for every day. Kind of like a walking, fascinating, awe-inspiring piece of art.

I wake up every day and just look at her and think how beautiful she is. What an incredible creation.
