All dogs came from wild dogs like wolf so seriously we're all got mixed, yeah even me! however when it comes to designer breed/hybrid where people combine two different breeds then I suspect that people are getting into fashion mode and willing to spend to much money for something my mom calls back yard accidents. It feels that money has a lot to do with it. Eh, but I don't mind or care, really, for me all dogs rock!
I like them. I have a hybrid dog. I consider it a mutt but who cares they are still our best friends.
It gets tiring all the people that are snooty about their "purebred" dogs. All dogs are mutts in the end anyway.
Waayy too many "hybrids" dying in shelters because they need homes.
Labradoodles? Get an Irish or American Water Spaniel and help preserve an old breed.
All those -oodle/-uggle "breeds" - shame on those "breeders" and the people who get suckered in to buying them at the pet store.

They are mutts, which is the best breed there is! ;-) I myself am a mix of lab and something else, and my mom couldn't love me more if she tried. Truly, it is all a matter of taste. Like plants, some are called weeds and some are called flowers, but they are all beautiful in their own way. I just hate that disreputable, so-called 'breeders' have found a new way to make money while adding to the problem of abused, unwanted and over bred animals.
Yeah they are mutts, or mixes, and ANY breeder should have to tour a few no-kill shelter to get a breeders licence in my opinion.
I have been fostering litters for a shelter, and I would strongly encourage anyone looking for a puppy to search online for rescues. Even breed specific rescues - you would be surprised.

There always have been hybrid dogs. They call(ed) them mutts. Basically it doesn't really matter what "brand" a dog is, it's the personality of the dog that is important.
As for the latest fashion to create "designer dogs" I can only say that people who do things like that are not at all interested in the wellfare and wellbeing of the animals. They want money, they want lots of it and they want it fast.
I hope and pray for a worldwide law that FORBIDS these kind of practices and really punishes the people who do so.

I hate it and to me it gets annoying when people fall for the "designer dog" scam. Seriously, if you want a mixed breed, go to a shelter. Breeding (responsible breeding, anyways) is about keep the breeds that are there healthy, not about making cute mixes for people and making money off them.
Badly bred mixed breeds can grow to be just as unhealthy as badly bred purebreds, you won't get a "healthier" dog just by getting a mutt.

By a tangible reason, I mean in a case such as if a certain breed did not have enough healthy members to breed healthy puppies. In which case, you would mix a healthy member (who has passed all genetic health tests) of a similar breed (possibly one that was used in the ancestry of the other) to the healthier member of said breed. But in this case, they would still be attempting to breed according to standard and still be breeding that one breed, not mixing two breeds in order to give them a cute name and sell.
And no, I am not some snooty purebred owner. I own a purebred, sure, but I also got me an adorable and very intelligent shelter mutt. And I love them both equally.

The definition of purebred is a type of dogs whose parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc have been bred to the same type for many generations. So, yes, the purebreds all started out as months.
But honestly, there are over 400+ breeds of dogs out there, do we REALLY need any more breeds? We've got breeds for companionship, farm work, etc, and unless and until a specific need comes up that none of the 400+ breeds already in existence can adequately fill, we do not need any more breeds. Period.

i think some cross breeds are better than the fancy originals. they combine the best traits of both breeds.
anybody that thinks the akc is bettering dog breeds is nuts; it doesn't even make any sense scientifically to limit the gene pool and the 'look' favored by some breeds is definitely not optimum for real world application.
that said, i do not favor high price cutesy hybreeding of dogs that do not combine well health wise or puppies that are not guaranteed a marvelous home.
I have nothing against the "hybrid" dogs themselves... But the breeders are another story. They're MUTTS! And there's nothing wrong with that... but there's also nothing special about it!!
A dog is a dog. I hate it when I see people at the dog park who are stuck up about their "labordoodle" or "goldendoodle" or "cockapoo" and look down on my dogs like their crap when they were bred for centuries for a PURPOSE. Those people paid tons of money for a dog bred without purpose. That's what a purebred is all about... There is a reason for it to be that way. - whether it be to guard, herd, carry, pull, sniff, track, rescue, swim, run, hunt, dig, retrieve, etc. A mutt on the other hand was not bred for such purpose. It either happened by accident, or by a breeder looking for a lot of money and a fancy name. It seems the sole purpose is aesthetics, and I don't call that a purpose if it doesn't have the real purpose to back it up.
What is "hybrid" dog supposed to mean anyway? It's NOT a hybrid anything! Same species!
And I don't like the AKC either. They promote puppy mills and call them "commercial breeders."
For people who argue they want a "hypoallergenic" dog, THERE IS NO SUCH THING! My mum's Schnauzer, Pepper has seborrhea which causes him to have a lot of dandruff, and yes she's allergic to him even though he doesn't exactly shed.
So they cross Poodles.... If they really want a dog that doesn't shed, then why don't they just go get a Poodle instead of crossing it with something that actually INCREASES it's chances of shedding?! That makes no sense. And by the time they have the dog they think will shed least... say a F2 generation labordoodle or something, the dog is already 3/4 Poodle by then anyway. So get a Poodle!!
Aside from that, to sum things up, I have nothing against the dogs, but I do have something against the breeders and the owners who have paid money to buy those dogs. RESCUE or ADOPT instead. There are "designer" dogs in the shelters. The designer craze is just another fasion industry gone to the dogs for owners of fancy named mutts to group together and look down upon the rest of us. (At least that's my personal experience) Let a dog be a dog!! Let real breeds fulfill their purpose! And let mutts be mutts, but loved just as much! And let everyone who even thinks about buying, adopt instead!

Pound puppies are my first choice. There are too many trends in everything we have, clothing, cars, objects. Dogs are not objects and should not be treated as such. People get "hybrids" to be cool, then when they realize they require responsibility, they are turned in or abandoned. I do not like the fact that they are being exploited.
This is not to say I don't like hybrid dogs. It is not their fault. I love all animals. I just don't like the way some are treated as accessories.
Mixing breeds that have been used in the past for specific purposes such as working, hunting,sporting, guard or personal protection, with other breeds such as the toy breeds or terriers often ends with dogs (and owners) that do not know what to do! The long time recognized breeds have been finely tuned to do a job. It is instinctual. Conscientious breeders have tried to breed out genetic problems (eyes, joint, structure and temperament), Uneducated and careless breeding ("Back yard Breeding") or mixing breeds undoes these efforts and can result the creation of weaker lines and too many unwanted pups. Far too many of these pups end up in shelters and being euthanized. In my strong opinion, the only reason to breed is to better the breed not to complicate it further or simply for capital gain.
Many individuals believe their dogs will be happier having had the chance to have a litter or "The children should observe "nature".) A bitch that is not of "excellent quality" should be spayed BEFORE she comes into season for the first time. Doing this can and will help prevent some cancers and other health related issues. The same applies to the males.
I myself have adopted mixed breeds in the past and have loved them to the end but, they were spayed or neutered immediately.

Like so many before me have said, hybrids are just mutts with a fancy name. It's just incredibly ridiculous that people actually pay for a mutt instead of adopting one from a shelter, just for the fashion of it or just because the name sounds cool. And then they'll be all stuck up about their mutts, and be all proud about how much they paid for them. I mean seriously, who cares if you have a "Maltzu", a "Puggle" or a "Labradoodle"? I'm getting so sick and tired of these "designer breeds", the people who breed them and especially the people who buy them. It's all about money and fashion, and it's incredible the number of people who actually care about that crap. How about instead of spending your money on a mutt, you go to the shelter and save one's life?
Hey Skye...I don't care about a dog as a fashion accesory or anything like that! I would not trade my dog for anything, he is the love of my life. I do admit that I did not get him from a shelter and I got him from a petshop, and I really regret that. But they need homes too. I would not tell anyone now to get one from a petshop because I realize the horrible conditions they live in. I didn't spend alot of money for a fashion accesory I paid money to get a best friend. I don't care what anyone think I love my baby...I would not trade him for anything. I do agree a hybrid is a mutt but they are more than that they are a best friend and a lifelong partner. All dogs are like that it is not just hybrids. Does it really matter if you have a mutt or a purebred as long as you have a best friend?
Dogs are dogs. Man's best friend. Steretyping isn't neccesary. A mutt is what you want to call it, but in my eyes, you are slandering an innocent bistander. You don't have to classify it's breed. They are all special.
A dog is a dog ! Pure breed or not we are all the same! If you want to buy a dog from a breeder, just make sure that the dogs there are treated well and that it's not a puppy mill. If you don't care about breed, go to a shelter. Simple as that ! But the most important thing is have your dog spayed or neutered , if you don't want to have little puppies all over!

As a future breeder and with 3+ years of study behind me so far, I've come to the conclusion that the health problems in today's purebreds are not from a limited gene pool. Rather, stupid breeders not genetically health testing all of their breeding stock, and even if they do, they sometimes breed a dog that has not passed one or more of it's tests.
I think the answer is to encourage responsible breeding, not condemn inbreeding.
A dog is a loveable animal, it doesn't matter what you call them they all need love!
If it's a stabilized mix aka a breed, then that's just what they are. A breed. If it's a random mix with little or no consistency, then I don't really consider them a breed. Not that there's anything wrong with that but without an end goal of establishing a breed, what can be the projected outcome or health of the group?
If hybrid is also mistakingly used to describe wolfdogs, they should be left alone. People who purposely breed wolfdogs generally do it wrong and for the wrong reasons, and many who buy wolfdogs are similarly unequipped or inexperienced to deal with such.
Dogs are just your friend, companion, and lover. They'll take care of you and love you lotts. And I don't think it maters if you have a mutt!!
I am a little dog that would possibly be a "designer dog" if anyone thought there was enough profit in it. I am probably a Corgi/JRT mix or "Cojack" as we have seen my "breed" called online. My Mama adopted me from the humane society where I had been dumped before weaning along with about 20 other puppies who were mostly dissimilar, but all the same age.
Seems pretty obvious that someone thought they could "breed" for profit and when that didn't happen, they just dumped us all. We were all lucky. We all got adopted! I am very, very happy in my new home. But that was just good luck. I can't help but think of all the pups that aren't so lucky.
We don't think the problem is designer or purebred breeders. It is irresponsible breeders who don't really consider the end result. More than profit is involved. So much more. Thanks to my "breeder" for at least not leaving me by the side of the road. Thanks to the Humane Society people for taking care of me and my "sibs." And thanks to Mama for deciding that she really needed a third doggie.

Designer dogs aka mutts, are a mix of two different breeds. I do not think there bad dogs. All dogs are great, no matter what breed. BUT if you ever should a get a mixed/designer dog go to a shelter or rescue. There are millions and millions of homeless animals in shelters and rescues being put to death daily. If you want a mixed breed save a life! No reputable breeder would ever breed a designer dog, because truth be told they are NOT a real breed. They are a mutt, mixed between two breeds. None breed true, like purebreds, thus making them mutts. Mutts are great dogs, so if your considering one - go through a shelter or rescue. Breeders do NOT breed mutts, unless they are BYBS (backyard breeders) If so they are in it for the profit. They do not test there dogs for any genetic disorders, they do not show there dogs in conformation, there dogs are not CH(champion) titled, and are NOT the best represented of the breed, proving itself worthy of breeding, they do not breed to better the breed. And of course since a designer dog is a mutt, its not a breed there for should not be bred ever, because there are so many in shelters now needing a home. All designer dogs aka mutts should be SPAYED AND NEUTERED. There are so many looking for homes, so ADOPT ADOPT ADOPT! If you want a dog from a breeder, the only good breeders, only breed purebreds NOT mutts.
I agree with Dublin Rose. I'm a Peke-a-chon so I guess I'm a designer dog. I was lucky to be rescued by my mommy and she choose me not because I was a designer dog, but because I was little and I matched my Big Brother. I have a little friend from school who was dumped by the side of the road and then strangers took him to humane society because the breeder mixed a Bichon and Pug and didn't like the results. Those are the breeders that that need to be taken to task.

My opinion, every dog matters! What would happen if you thought about this... All these pure-breds we have now are called purebreds, but what did they come from? Mixes of various breeds. It's wrong to say that they're mutts. Mutt wasn't a bad word till it was used in this form.
Annie, my Puggle (Pug/Beagle hybrid) {NO OFFENSE} is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY [etc...] smarter then ANY regular purebred here. Is it too much for a dog to know over 100 tricks? Maybe, but Annie does and you purebreds out there, I think it's great that you're that but don't look down on Hybrids or mixes!

Well, I must say that at my house we love ALL DOGS. Period. However, we can't help think kind of badly for people that breed for profit - there are just too many dogs out there looking for homes. Go to a shelter - you will find both mutts and purebreds alike. And they are all good dogs!
As for the "hybrid" breeders, we think of them the same way. I think that these breeds are leading to snobbery, though. There was a labradoodle in my obedience class who was SO SWEET and SO SMART - she got 100% on her test! - but her and two of her littermates were dumped at a shelter because their hair wasn't up to the "labradoodle par" and therefore deemed useless. That is SO NOT COOL. So, mutts and purebreds, one and all, we love them, but people need to start using their heads when they decide to start breeding all these dogs!

Hey, if it's something like a labradoodle or a cockapoo, if enough people have bred it, the AKC should reconize it as a real breed! It should have a breed standard, and shows for best of breed. This is only my opinion, so if you disagree, dogster mail me and we'll start a debate. (No curse-words or bad language, please.)

Heh, I have nothing at all against mutts, and I feel that they make just as great pets as purebreds. (Some of you know my oh so smart and adorable Papillon mix, Treader.)
No one is saying otherwise, although many people take it that way. But since about 75% of shelter dogs are mutts and other reasons I've already mentioned, I am simply against the intentional breeding of mutts. Unless it's for a good cause such as improving the health of a breed that is in desperate trouble that it cannot get out of by continuing pure breeding. But that would be a very small minority in all of cases of purposeful mixed breeding indeed.
These wonderful hybrids are "mutts" and people are hoping to make a fast buck on them, as usual. If you want a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, go to you local animal shelter or rescue (many accept mixes with the predominant breed) and adopt one! I just don't think we need to keep breeding when so many wonderful dogs die EACH and EVERY day.
I hope the breeders are being responsible and looking at the parents they are breeding together and the characteristics of each breed. Also, they need to think about the availability of outstanding pet homes BEFORE breeding. Otherwise, call them what you want......a dog is a being to be loved and enjoyed regardless of "papers!" The AKC can worry about labels!
Go adopt a mutt from the shelter, combine the names of it's breeds together and there ya go. No need to go buy one from a pet store, the shelters are loaded with them.
All it consists of is some greedy person combining two breeds of dogs and giving them a ridiculous name. Sadly, many people are falling for this ridiculous scam.
I think they are legit unless their are more then 2 breeds invloved, then it's called a mutt! Nevertheless some of the cutest dogs I have ever seen are not full purebreds:)

Names don't matter, if your a mutt then your a mutt be proud. All those designer names are just dumb and useless. It's sad how many humans get caught up in having to have a certain breed or even a certain mutt. Get the dog that picks you, not the other way around.

call them what you want but my mommy loves them all. its a shame that so many animals are bred just for money or just for their fur-they all need to be loved and respected. my pack at home are pure breds but my parents just love our breeds (along with collies). they are partial, i guess, but they respect all walks of life and are instilling that in our 5 yr old human brother. we are all "cross breeds" if you think about it...none of us are actually pure breds. we all derived from another kind somewhere in our blood line!
There are enough dogs in shelters being put down. We dont need more dogs, purebred, mixed, hybrids or otherwise to add to those being euthanized in the shelters.
In just one Alabama shelter, 400-800 animals are euthanized every month.
Why is anyone adding to this number?
As pointed out in the first few points, yes we are all mixed in one way or another, but let's face facts...
Schnauzer = Pure breed
Poodle = Pure breed
Schnoodle = MUTT!
I am a Schnoodle and I don't mind barking that I am a mutt. I am just as cute and lovable as the full breeds, I just don't have to spend all that time trying to fit into the AKC standards. I am good with that. It shouldn't matter if you are a mutt or full breed, all that matters is that we all have loving homes!
I can't help but BOL that some of the designer doggies cost more then a pure breed. How crazy is that? Do you know you can rescue/adopt designer doggies everyday for a low fee? (As well as pure breeds) Not to mention that designer dogs are keeping Petstores and puppy mills in business.
My big problem is that some breeders are out there trying to make the next big designer dog so they can fill there pockets with money, when so many dogs-pure breeds and mutts are homeless. It is a sad shame.

I like the hybrid dogs but when they breed two dogs just to make a really cute fashion dog then why woulds they make a fashion dog? Every dog is cute if you want a fashion dog then just a pick a chihuahua or something. Every dog is cute so don't buy a designer dog by a mutt,
People who breed dogs that aren't AKC registered or come from puppy mills are just adding to the problem of pet over population and making it harder for those of us who are homeless to find a home. My owner fosters and rescues and she knows! Please spay and neuter your fur-kids.
All breeds were "designed" by somebody and are still in the process of enhancement by careful breeding. However, until the "designing" of a particular gene combination reaches that tipping point where it is generally recognized as a separate breed with attributes worthy of preserving for the long-term, it is still experimentation and in the realm of "we like our two separate breeds so let's combine them and see what we get" or "ooops, our "Daisy" got out when in heat and "Spot" down the street is the father of her pups."
On the other hand, a great dog is a great dog, regardless of looks, breeding or whatever it is called. Just check out all the wonderful and hopeful "mutts" in the shelters, as well as the abandoned pure breeds some idiot bought and then dumped.

There are a few things being dealt with here. Purebreds, Mutts, and Hybrids (aka "designer breeds").
Skye is a 100% mutt, and I'm proud of that! Who knows what breeds she has mixed in together! I absolutely love mutts of all sorts.
The so-called "hybrids" are mutts too, get over it. Okay, contradicting my statement in my previous post, I have nothing against the hybrids themselves. Yes, dogs are all the same inside, they are all our best friends and we love them all the same way. I just think it's stupid to pay for a mutt (hybrid, if you will, same thing) when you can adopt one.
About purebreds, I have nothing against the dogs themselves either. First off, there are a lot of purebreds in shelters needing homes. Adopt one, don't buy one! Second, if you wish to buy one from a breeder, make sure it's a good one, not a puppymill. As to us, pet shops are absolutely out of the question. Someone else will end up buying them, but not me. I have knowledge of what goes on behind the curtains and refuse to support these methods.

They are called mixed breeds! People pay thousands of dollars for "designer dogs" (mixed breeds) when hundreds of mixed breeds are euthanized in shelters every year. If people want a mixed breed, they should adopt one and give it a second chance, not give money to a breeder who may not be taking care of the dogs the right way (not giving them: good quality food, clean water safe and clean living enviroments, and lots of love). Adopting a dog means that you are saving a dog's life.
As long as you don't buy them from a petstore and instead went to the local shelter, call them whatever you want. Just love them and treat them with love and respect and you will reap a reward more amazing than anything you can ever "buy".

Mojotiki, I don't get your comparison of hybrid dogs with humans. Sure, very few humans now a days are "purebreds". But... we don't buy humans.
No breed of dog has been in existance from the beginning of time. We are all Hybrids of some sort.
I'm collie, maybe, and golden retriever, maybe, or... who cares! I'm beautiful! Breeders make money off these 'designer dogs' - because there is a market for it. It's just that simple. Why get a mutt from a shelter when you can spend outrageous amounts of money for a status symbol? BOL!!! I'm glad my people like to rescue mutts!
I don't think we need to breed any more dogs, but once they are here, I love them all, no matter what their background is,from ,hybrid, to mutt, to purebred, They are all loveable and need love.

The word 'Hybrid', when referring to genetics means, the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock, especially the offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties, species, or races. In general the word means, 'something of mixed origin or composition.' Hybrid dogs, or designer dogs as some call them, are becoming quite popular. Below is a list of the most popular hybrid dogs. The best way to determine the traits of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. The Dog Breed Info Center(R) does not attempt to interpret the temperaments of each individual hybrid mix because the differences in the dogs, even within the same litter can vary greatly. If you do not feel the temperament of one of the purebreds in the mix is suited for your lifestyle, then that hybrid dog is not for you. I think it's a bad idea to breed animals based on whimsy. There are enough mixed breed dogs in shelters. Many of these so-called "hybrids" have little research or proven science behind them like established purebred lines.
I suppose the goal is to get the best of both breeds, but hybrid vigor tends to decrease in subsequent generations, and breeders/owners may wind up with the worst of both breeds or a new genetic anomaly.
I love mutts and have two of my own, I just question the wisdom of manufacturing them.
Well Let me say I have 1 pound "mutt" that we rescued and 1 purebred that we also rescued from being put down and we love both of them. Our pound mutt is more like a human than a dog, but i am going to get a "Daniff" because I want both qualities from the Dane and the Mastiff. I am not aganist hybrid dogs as long as both family lines are healthy so the pups are healthy. Like said before some people want purebred that are bred for a specific purpose and somepeople just want man's best friend.
Naming dogs with these crazy names is just another way for breeders to make money. People are paying over 500 dollars for a MUTT. Mutts are great and we do not want breeders ruining that. ADOPTION SAVES LIVES

My dog is a crossbreed, plain and simple, we got her for free because her mom was mated to the wrong dog and the pups were supposed to be pedigree! The idea that "hybrids" are worth more is rubbish because there's no way of knowing what your actualy getting.
Though crosses are generally healthier than pedigrees' that is the only reason i can see them being desirable. Give me a healthy mutt any day over a pedigree that may have complications.
But still.....mutts are mutts. It's wrong to slap a fancy lable on a dog for the sake of making money, that and it encourages more puppy mills.
