Without a crate, my dog would be bouncing around in the vehicle like a pea in a gourd, increasing the likelihood of injury to himself. Also, if I need to slam on the brakes, he and I are both safe. He won't become a projectile object that either injures or kills himself when he hits the back of the front seats, or myself if he hits me and propels us both through the windshield. Another method of safety restraint is a seat belt harness.
