What Is Calming Shampoo? How Does It Work?

Maxbone has designed a dog shampoo that is hypoallergenic, and paraben-free and aims to soothe itchy, irritated skin. This Calming Shampoo comes in a 12-fluid-ounce squeeze bottle with a fun tropical scent.

The shampoo is designed to be applied to a wet coat and then allowed to soak for 5–10 minutes before rinsing. I found the viscosity of the shampoo lent itself well to being spread evenly through the coat without pouring out of my hand or off my dog too quickly. It also rinsed out well and performed as expected, leaving both of my dogs with allergies with happy, non-irritated skin after their baths.

While this shampoo didn’t have any particular effect on making their coats look extra shiny or smooth, it exceeded expectations for its intended purpose. I also noted that while the scent of the shampoo is moderately strong while in use, I, who can be sensitive to scents, did not find it overpowering. A quick sniff check of my dogs after they were dry found that while they still had a lingering hint of the scent in their coat, it had mostly dissipated.

Pair this Calming Shampoo with Maxbone’s Deep Cleanse Shampoo Dispensing Brush to make bath time easier and exfoliate the skin.

Calming Shampoo – A Quick Look

Pros
  • Mild and pleasing scent
  • Science-backed, effective ingredients
  • Easy to use
  • Works as intended
Cons
  • Contains aloe (safe topically, but toxic if ingested)
  • Coats aren’t as smooth or shiny after use as with many other shampoos (but that is not its purpose)

Calming Shampoo Pricing

Maxbone’s Calming Shampoo is currently priced at $18.00 ($16.20 if you opt for their “Subscribe and Save” option). Since this shampoo functions similarly to a medicated shampoo, this is a great value for a 12-fluid-ounce shampoo bottle. I do like the idea of the “Subscribe and Save” option. With this shampoo needing to be thoroughly applied to the whole coat and recommended to be used twice for the best effect, you will need regular refills.

Overall Shampoo Quality

This shampoo bottle has a soft feel that is pleasant to the touch. The pop top of the squeeze bottle is easy to open even after your hands and the bottle become wet and soapy. The viscosity of the shampoo itself is good for quick and easy application without waste from spillage.

I did find that my dogs’ coats almost seemed frizzy once they dried, or at least not as soft and smooth as you might be used to seeing after a bath. It should be noted that Maxbone sells a Perfect Shine Pack that may target this better if that is important to you. This shampoo is designed specifically for soothing your pet’s skin and works great for this.

Shampoo Variety and Purchasing Options

This shampoo only comes in one size and one scent. I was unenthused to learn the shampoo would be a tropical scent since I usually don’t like these. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how balanced their tropical scent is, and I would use it again. I do wish there were other options, though. Larger shampoo bottles for households with more pets or larger pets would also be nice, though Maxbone has a “Subscribe and Save” option for this product, so you can keep yourself stocked as needed with little extra effort.

High-Quality Ingredients

All three of my dogs have allergies to varying degrees, and I switched all of them to medicated shampoo years ago. Those shampoos don’t smell particularly great and have a less-than-optimal thick, sticky consistency, but I have been a devout user for years anyway because of what they can do.

Color me surprised then when I checked the ingredients in this calming shampoo and found actual legitimate ingredients that are known to help maintain the skin barrier and soothe irritation, particularly the Tetrasodium EDTA-Hydrolyzed Oat Protein, even though this isn’t a veterinary company.

I was thrilled to have this option for my two dogs, who have mild allergies, and it worked just as well for them as my expensive, stinky, medicated shampoos did. My only concern with this shampoo was the inclusion of aloe, which we often think about as soothing since it helps with burns.

As a personal preference, I generally avoid using pet products with aloe because it is unfortunately toxic to dogs if ingested. However, the amount of aloe that is present in this product does not present any real risk, and only provides skin-soothing benefits, rendering my concerns moot.

Is Calming Shampoo a Good Value?

Maxbone’s Calming Shampoo is a great value. This product is reasonably priced, well-designed, effective, and pleasant. The shampoo is easy to use, the instructions are clear, and the volume of shampoo you get is commensurate with the cost. A 10% discount is also built into the way you would likely prefer to order it, which is an added bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What scent is this shampoo?

Maxbone’s website lists this scent as a mood-lifting tropical scent. I found it perfectly embodied a beach without leaning too heavily on coconut notes.

Is this shampoo safe for my pet?

While I don’t generally recommend pet products with aloe, this shampoo is safe and effective though I would be extra attentive to a pet licking the soap or drinking the soapy water. Since this product is intended for topical use only, the inclusion of aloe shouldn’t pose a problem.

Why does this shampoo say to let it soak for 5–10 minutes before rinsing?

Products like this shampoo that want to soothe your pet’s skin and help repair their skin barrier need time in contact with the skin to work effectively. While this may seem inconvenient, it gives you time to take a break from bending over midway through the cleaning process and you’ll be thrilled with the results for your pet’s skin.

Our Experience With Calming Shampoo

I found Maxbone’s Calming Shampoo to be effective and easy to use. I was so happy with the results and would recommend it to any pet with irritated skin. This is the best over-the-counter, non-medicated shampoo I’ve found for this purpose, and I am so happy to see the attention to detail Maxbone has applied to this product and its ingredients. Pet supplements, grooming products, and the like have very few regulations, and companies making unfounded claims about their products abound, but Maxbone’s Calming Shampoo is exactly what it claims to be.

I coupled this shampoo with Maxbone’s Deep Cleanse Shampoo Dispensing Brush, which was a great help in making sure the shampoo got to every layer of my dogs’ coats and worked into the skin well too.

Conclusion

I loved the simplicity of this product. The design is clear, the instructions straightforward, the ingredient list effective, and the value is great. Any concerns I had about this product were rendered irrelevant based on the results and the attention to detail Maxbone has put into creating this shampoo, and they followed through with all claims made.

What I care most about is safely easing the skin discomfort my dogs’ experience, which this did fantastically. I hope Maxbone expands their shampoo line. If their other shampoos were this well thought out and effective, they could take the grooming world by storm.
