“The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital is one of the busiest veterinary teaching hospitals in North America, and animals treated at Ryan receive the most comprehensive care available anywhere. Our faculty and staff see approximately 12,000 emergency cases among the 28,000+ patient visits each year. More than 50 percent of those cases are referrals from practitioners throughout the country. Continuing more than 100 years of veterinary hospital experience, the current building opened in Philadelphia in 1981. The Ryan Hospital treats companion- and small-animal patients of all shapes and sizes: mammals and reptiles and birds and fish. In this teaching hospital, fourth-year students on clinical rotation frequently staff the front lines handling patient intake, collecting case histories and conducting initial examinations under the guidance of veterinary faculty and residents. The Hospital's Emergency Service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is staffed by board-certified specialists trained in critical care. As an advanced trauma and diagnostic center, the service functions like a human emergency unit. Residents and interns who want to specialize in critical care come here. In addition, Penn is considered the birthplace of critical care medicine and veterinary cardiology, as well as many other veterinary medical specialties. ”

MJR VHUP saved my life when no other vet's office was open.

Staff is kind and ultra competent, facilities and care options are unmatched in the area. They serve as an emergency referral for many vets in the area because of their 24/7/365 availability, and so they understand and facilitate transferring patients back to their regular vet when extended care is needed. As a pet emergency room, they are subject to triage situations, so there can be a bit of a wait depending on your pet's condition. Due to a urinary blockage I was prioritized and treated within 20 minutes. I spent only one night there, but they made me comfortable, then gave Mama full counseling and made her aware of all the options regarding my condition - all at 4:30 am. When you have a weekend or even an overnight animal emergency, Penn is a godsend.
