Cheswick, PA 15024 West Deer Dog Shelter is unique in many aspects. It is the only shelter in the area that is operated by a township. The shelter is located in western Pennsylvania approx. 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. We rescue stray and lost dogs from West Deer Township. The township has its own dog law officer who is in charge of the shelter and volunteers.
A small volunteer group is responsible for feeding, vet visits, laundry, cleaning the shelter and adoptions. We have a junior volunteer program where children over the age of 12 with a signed waiver from the parents may walk and participate in walking the dogs and other shelter activities.
We have volunteers who will speak at any group (scouting groups, church groups, garden clubs, school groups ect.) on bite avoidance and other dog topics. "neighborhood talks" are also available. We will come to your neighborhood and speak to your children and their friends about saftey and how to avoid dog bites. Call Barb Pasquale for more information.
Our shelter does not keep the dogs in cages except mealtime. They have a fenced area attached to the building with a doggy door for easy access in our out of the building. This allows the dogs to run and play with each other or take a nap as the mood strikes them.
We greatly depend on donations made by caring people to cover the medical costs. These can often be expensive when dealing with a starved and neglected dog or with an older dog who will live with us until he dies. We could not maintain a no kill shelter without your donations.
