“The Town of Cary’s first dog park will provide a place for dog owners to let their pets run free safely and legally without a leash. The park is approximately one acre and located adjacent to Godbold Park, near the corner of Northwest Maynard and Chapel Hill roads. Pet owners can purchase an annual membership or day pass at any Cary community center. Membership cards and day passes will allow entry through an electronic gate. With the card access system, the Town can: • Require proof of vaccinations for the health and safety of humans and dogs • Offset operating costs through memberships and fees Features • Five-foot high chain link fence with screening, paved entrance & electronic gate • Lighted areas for small dogs and for large dogs • Wood chips for ground cover • Benches • Water stations • Information kiosk • Pet cleanup areas Hours of Operation 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Daily (No entry allowed after 9 p.m.) • Track usage to plan for the future • Promote registration of dogs within Cary ”
We're going to see the puppies! My mom and dad take my sister and I to this park quite often. They may have paid an arm and a leg for the pass, but we visit the park enough to make it worth it. We always park and walk up with leashes but when that fence opens, my sister and I fly to greet new friends! I say Hi to the nearest dogs and then I immediately turn my focus to the 3 P's...Pee, Poop and Play! We kept our visits short in the beginning cus Mom wanted us to have good experiences and learn that the park is a good place for friendly socialization. We now have many, many friends that meet us there often and we stay for an hour or more at a time! The park is, by far, my favorite place to go. That and to my Aunt Holly's! |
Cary Dog ParkWe love going to the park!! There are alot of the same dogs so we know who will be there, plenty of room to run around and a small dog side in case there are too many big dogs or some dog needs a time out. We play on the big dog side most of the time!! The people & dogs are great!! posted: February 7th, 2007 |
Play SafeWhile a couple of the park features are something you would expect to see in Cary (expensive fees for the area, screening process), it really helps me to relax knowing that my dogs are playing with others that are up-to-date on their shots and accounted for in the system. We've been members since December, and have only seen a moderate altercation one time. Other than that, the owners we see are very knowledgable about their dogs, have socialized and trained their pups well, and are vigiliant about keeping an eye on things, putting a stop to situations before they get out of control. Since the gates are electronically controlled and you have to have a city-issued card to enter, it keeps any sneaky owners from skirting the rules. The park itself is smaller than some of the other Triangle options. There are separate areas for small and large dogs, but overall the total area is a little less than an acre. The ground is covered with a wood-chip mulch, which does bother some folks' allergies, especially when the dogs kick it up. Be sure to wear old clothes when you go--you will be filthy by the end of your visit! There are always poop bags and conveniently-located trash cans, and everyone is always picking up poop. The overarching philosophy I've heard (which is so refreshing) is that "Well, I know that mine sometimes go and I miss it, so I'll pick this one up because someone will do the same for me." One of the neatest new attractions are the fire hydrants. Yup, that's right--the fire hydrants. They recruited an artist to come work with some of the regulars, and she taught them how to draw blue-dog-art inspired pictures of their dogs. After a few months, voila! Some of our best dog park pals have their caricature on a fire hydrant, and they are gorgeous! Recently a boy scout built a sheltered area for his eagle project, so now if it starts raining and your pups are having too much fun to leave, at least you can stay dry :)! Overall, this is one of the best dog parks I've been to in the triangle area. And I write that because of the great people and well-behaved dogs that frequent it. They fought hard for their space, and they work hard to make sure it's the best it can be. If you're looking for a safe, fun place to work on socializing a puppy or to let your lab blow off some energy, this is a great place to do it! |
