This happened recently at the Times-Standard newspaper in Eureka, Calif. Incredible! Every home in earthquake country should be equipped with a dog like Sophie. Jake doesn’t quite cut it as an early-warning system. He tends to sleep through minor earthquakes, or look puzzled and somewhat annoyed at slightly larger ones for waking him up out of one of his 78 daily naps. (He has not yet experienced any large quakes. I hope he never does.)

Update Jan 14: We received notice from Sophie’s owner, Brian Wheeler (not the first person who runs by the camera), that he has posted additonal footage of that shows Sophie 15 seconds before she bolts looking at the floor suddenly and then dismissing it. Fifteen seconds later she once again suddenly looks to the floor and the runs. To read more on her reactions and see what happened in the longer video, check out his YouTube channel.
