A Dog Walks into the Emergency Room...

German shepherds are known for their brains and their calmness in the face of difficult situations. The shepherd mix in this story has an abundance of both.

Sounds like the start to a lame joke, right? But this is no joke, although it may put a smile on your face. Here's what happened.

Saturday nights are frequently busy times at emergency rooms, and medical staffers come to expect almost anything. But no one at a New Mexico ER expected what walked through the sliding door last Saturday night: An injured dog.

The German shepherd mix had blood on his nose and paw, and a puncture wound on his leg, according to an AP story.

Animal control officer Robin Loev, who was called to the scene, says the wound was likely from a dog bite. He said the shepherd mix was smart and calm, and he gave him credit for knowing where to go when he needed help.

The dog was reunited with his owners, so all is well. But how did he end up in ER? What prompted him to walk through the door? Was he really looking for help? Could he smell band-aids and nurses? Did the owner of the dog who bit him feel guilty and drop him off there? Ah, to be a fly on the wall of this dog's mind...
