A Dog's Life Span

The operational life span of dogs averages 12 years, but your model’s mileage may vary. As a rule of thumb, larger varieties depreciate much more rapidly than compact ones. For instance, a 7-year-old mastiff or Great Dane is very close to obsolescence. However, a poodle, beagle, or similar small dog could easily function twice that long or longer. The oldest documented canine life span was 29 years.

"Our model's Mileage" I would appreciate it if this author would not compare my living, breathing, loving dog... to an exhaust blowing inanimate object!!!!! :(

Obsolescence: no longer in use or no longer useful By your definition, my dogs are almost no longer useful (both nine years old). They are my pets. They don't need to be "useful", they just are. Please think about the language you're using.

I would appreciate it if dogs were not compared to cars. I can't understand how a vet, someone who works to help animals, could make such a harsh comparison.

Please people.. I don't think they are meaning it to be cruel.. but to be funny and to put a humor twist on something educational. I mean, honestly... who even comes up with an "owners manual" for a living thing anyway? It's just a light humor way to give basic canine information. Relax!

I think the owners manuel is a very brief, well made advisory, and information kit, on the dogs body, and functions. I also think the life span was not very usefull. Something maybe like: Type of Breeds: Life SPan *********** 12 *********** 6 I dont know something like that can help an owner evaluate in such a more comprehensive way.

Hm, I also think they should be more precise about estimating our dogs life span. Like, does it depend only on size, or on purity of breed, or on exercise, or all that . . . I'm still don't know how long is mu dog going to live.

It's not really 12 years. It could be 15 years.

I actually picked up a copy of this book at Half Price Books a while back. It is a funny, overview of owning a dog and the basics of training, etc... I don't think the writers intend any disregard for our pooches, but were trying to look at the wonder of the dog as a natural engineering wonder. The obsolescence seemed to refer to the lifespan of larger dogs versus smaller dogs. Which would give more detail to the concern of what dog lives how long. I don't think they meant "useless" but were referring to how long the dog may live. It is just a creative writing perspective for humor. If they were recommending to sell your "lemon" to a used dog dealer, then I would be worried... Enjoy it and get a chuckle! They want your dog to be as happy and healthy as their dogs, I assure you!

Sometimes a 9 yrs old dog is more useful than a 30 yrs old man who finishes high school and graduated from college. it is very rude to write a manual saying a 9yrs old dog is VERY CLOSE to obsolescence.

I'm offended by your comparisons and referring to older dogs as being close to obsolescence. That is very very insensitive of you. I will not spend the time to read anymore of this article.

This manual was written in a tongue-in-cheek parody of a computer or mechanical owner's manual; no one in the manual is there any language that should be construed as devaluing your dog. It is a parody, with a comic slant to very useful information. Please do not read an attack on the love we all have for our dogs, because it clearly was not meant that way. I found the entire manual to be hilarious, along with the "mechanical" illustrations.

I understand that the book is written like a manual for a car or a piece of equipment. While the approach may have worked for a book (I doubt it), it definitely is problematic here where many people are only reading small chunks. Is it really a more engaging or funnier style? I don't think so.

I don't believe there is a life span for a pet. Dogs, birds, horses, etc can live long with proper TLC. My oldest dog died at 19 years old. Dogs can live long once they have the proper nutrition and exercise in there everyday lifestyle.

This is a cute article although I wish I could put in factors like activity level and food to get a more accurate lifespan for my dog.

Guys Imagine the fear and apprehension a new dog owner goes through after bringing home his first dog. Now when he/she reads this don't you think he/she will relax and really enjoy the dog? This is great, funny! Don't take it too seriously. If you are that sensitive, your dog knows it, and will come to behave just like you. Trust me!

Got some great news for all of you with nine years dogs. I met Elsa, who is mix bread and is 16 years old! Looking good, when she goes out for a walk she lies down, but is rather pleasant and isn't terminaly ill. My friends husband has a coker spaniel who is 17 years old, also female, she goes for a run every morning, and the very champion is my veterinarian's dog. Also female, mix bread, she is 23!!!! And still wants to make love with furniture, but doesn't hear that well, though. So I feel confident that with all developments in technology of food production and vitamines and veterinarian science, my female mix bread is going to live at least 30 years! :)

I find this entry amusing come one, it to be taken in slight humor. I mean think about those morning cartoons where the narrator is trying to go through the steps of some exercise while the cartoon character acts it out. Tongue in cheek people. We all love our furry family members and we all can take a joke. My puppy has many "miles" ahead of her and I look forward to cruising with her.

Those taking offense to the wording, get a life. As my dachshund would say, Barkity bark bark bark. Woof. Booofle. It's funny, and it prompted me to share it with co-workers and got them involved at looking into Dogster. Chill out, breathe, and go play with your poopers. You really think they would take offense, no way! They'd just giggle and read on until they found something more interesting. Get over yourselves.

Quirk BooksThe Dog Owner's Manual is a basic guide to dog care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides dog owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
