We recently adopted a beautiful 1 y.o. Weim.

We didn't know much about this breed although we are learning pretty fast.

How do you deal with their high energy? Walking him just seems to "get him started" for something else.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, you have a beautiful blue there smile
Feel free to join the blue weim forums at
www.blueweimaraner.com

or weimaraneraddict.com
which is more active for all weimy owners.

Yes, they are quite high energy, mines 2 years old and is a fireball, or cannonball, he loves to run and were always looking for new places to go hiking and where I can let him off the leash. Good thing with live in a quiet neighborhood with a small lake where he can stretch his legs and play with neighbors dogs. We also go to a dog park on the weekends which is always fun, he loves meeting new dogs.
Exercise wise, it depends on really how much time you have, I enjoy walks myself, so we go for a 3-4 mile jog in the morning, to stay fit, then I have school, come back, go for a 40 min-1 hour walk around the neighborhood, in the evening, usually let him run around the yard and play ball or go run around the lake. Hes eating sleeping on the couch or running smile We went to the mountains this weekend and after hiking for 6 miles he still was pulling me up the mountain, hes like a little locomotive, a lot of strength in those 60 lbs.. smile

My weim has "spurts" of energy. He literally moves my furniture. But he also loves to sleep. Sometimes he doesn't even want to go for a walk. I call him a lazy boy.

well we try to keep me busy,
I play fetch every day, go for long walks, and sometimes mommy takes me rollerblading (which is fun).
then on the weekends we go to the doggie beach (mind you mommy has to drive 1 hour and half to go to this beach, it's the only around that allows dogs), and I love the beach because i love to swim and play fetch... when we don't go to the beach we end up at the doggie park which has a lake and I can swim there as well and play fetch...
so when I get home I am exhausted and my parents can rest too...
so this is how I stay out of trouble, and behave well...

hope this helps your parents with some ideas on how to keep you busy...

oh yes I almost forgot my parents adopted my sister Bindi about a year and half ago, so this way we also entertain ourselves once in awhile...

I'm lazy. Really lazy. Mom says I am a Basset trapped in a Weim body. The only running I do is when mom calls me back inside from going potty. I RuUUUUN to the back door, so I can get inside super-quick and get the best napping spot on the couch. And then I hold that couch down for the next 6 hours or so! Mom is trying to get me to build muscle so I can show more, so we run on the farm, I play fetch, and mom lets me follow her when she rides her horses. I also play with my little Pug brother Seattle.
P.S. I just turned 1 this month!

You should just let him run! Put him in an enclosed space and unleash all his energy! Maybe even bring a tennis ball an play a little fetch. It's natural for weims to retrieve, so instinct will take over and he'll be off before you know it. Trust me. I'm just like thatwink
