Need help deciding on a food?

Zeus Zeus - King of the Dogs     Barked: Tue Dec 4, '12 8:26am PST  I have a one year old Saint Bernard (and a two year old GSD). The SB has started to smell recently and he is losing weight. He is uninterested in his food and sometimes will not eat all day. He gets Pedigree dry and Pedigree wet. He is also starting to smell like stale, moldy wet rags. I have decided to change their food. I just don't know what the best food is for them. I can only spend about $100 a month on food and these big dogs eat a lot, which is why Pedigree is great. I can get 20kg for $30 and it lasts two weeks. So lets say I will spend $50 - 60 every two weeks. I used to buy Royal Canin for the Shepherd but it got too expensive at 70/bag when we got the SB, then we used Eukaneuba for a while at $60/bag but they ate too much of the small bag and it was too expensive. Is there a large breed dry food, large bag (18 - 20 kg) for $60 or less, that is good for the dogs? Ginger 968251     Barked: Tue Dec 4, '12 10:06am PST  You can try Horizon Pulsar. It is grain free and is on the lower end of the price range for grain free foods. You can also try Precise or Hi-Tek Naturals. They are also priced well. I currently feed Horizon Legacy, but it would probably cost a little more than you prefer to spend ($60 for a large 28.6 lb bag) and is a very good quality grain free food. my posts | my page | msg me | my family's posts | gift me | become pals [notify]

Barney,- friend of- Lennox Bad to the Bone     Barked: Tue Dec 4, '12 11:33pm PST  Check you petsmart's price on Nutro Max for large breeds - it is definitely a step up from Pedigree in that there's no by products, and no whole ground corn although it has both wheat and rice. But it's moderately priced, you should be able to find it in petsmart, and you can often find coupons on line for it at Nutro.com/my nutro rewards. There's a guarantee with this...that your dog will like the food, have a better skin and coat, and you'll be cleaning up less stool cuz the food is more digestible. So keep your bag, and the receipt, and check with whereever you buy it about returning unusued food. joey I'm working on- three toys!     Barked: Wed Dec 5, '12 10:45am PST  Assume you don't have a Costco in your area, but if you do, they have a good grain-free food. I forget what it costs, but it might be in your price range. One thing to consider is that, normally the better the quality of dog food it is, the higher priced it is, but you may find you need to feed less, since the lower-priced foods have more filler and less nutrition. Looking at the recommended feeding amount on the back of the bag is a place to start in determining how much to feed, although I've found that many of the manufacturers, in my opinion, overstate how much you should feed! Assuming you're in the continental U.S., many of the mail order places ship at a reasonable price, which opens up more possibilities. I am looking into Authority and Nutrience. Thanks for the suggestions.
