|FWIW, from the time rescued Ember when she was 2 and a half years until a few a months before she turned 5, I fed her as much as she wanted to eat - often up to 3 meals a day - and she maintained perfect weight. Suddenly I noticed she was getting kinda thick around the ribs, so I started cutting back. Then I cut back some more, then some more... Finally I did the math and found out she'd been eating double the recommended amount for a dog her size!
I cut her WAY back and she dropped back to a healthy weight. I think the fact that we recently got her Lyme under control - thus she needs less energy to fight it all the time - and that I added a probiotic to each meal both had an effect on her weight. With the probiotics, there's a better chance more of a meal will be utilized in the digestive tract, rather than going to waste. Vance will actually lose weight dramatically if he goes off his probiotics.
While it's normal for Huskies to have difficulty gaining weight, I don't believe it's ok to just let them be underweight. It's also normal for Huskies to resource guard, and that's hardly acceptable. So probiotics, high calorie diets and extra meals are the norm around here, when applicable.
