(Walking)- Yuki
Cute outside,- vicious inside. |
| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 8:36pm PST | | | | | | This morning, I was unwrapping a package & there were large plastic bubble wraps inside. I popped one for fun & Yuki jumped a bit, but she was fine. Then I did one more (my mistake), & she ran away. When she calmed down we petted her. She was fine. I left the wrap by the stairs & my mother came down and jumped onto the wrap making loud popping noises. Yuki freaked when she was lying there with her hind legs shivering. My mom felt bad and held her when I told her not to when she's in that state of mind.
Now Yuki is afraid of EVERY wrapper, plastic bag-like noise. Omg, I feel horrible. Please don't make me feel any more horrible than I already do. !
I've tried to let her get used to the noises. I sat her next to me & made noises with a plastic bag & when she didn't run away, I gave her a treat. I did this for awhile. Then I did this with an empty plastic bottle (because it resembled the bubble wrap sound). She was fine.
A few minutes ago, I picked up something that sounded like a plastic wrapper & she ran away from me.
I cannot say this enough: I feel horrible. Can anybody help me with this? This all happened today & I can't help but feel that this is all my fault, which it is!
Please help, I will forever appreciate it

Chad
You're not- bowing low- enough...
|
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 7:00am PST | | | | | | I agree with Koji. As you've already discovered, Shibas are very sensitive little dogs, but they do eventually come back around.
Our A/C broke a few weeks ago, so I had to open the windows in my apt, which I never do b/c it's so noisy outside. Chad was terrified of the whole process - the noise the window made when I opened it, the sounds from outside, the sound of the ceiling fan, the air from the ceiling fan. You get the idea. Even after the A/C was fixed, it was DAYS before he would willingly go back into the apartment when we came back from walks. I literally had to drag him inside. But, he's totally fine now - has forgotten all about it.
Keep doing what you're doing, and it will all be ok.

Saki
I'm a licker,- not a biter! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 8:54am PST | | | | | | I had a similar problem with Saki with several different noises. She hates my steamer (the way it looks and sounds) and barks and does her Shiba 500 when it's on and she used to hate my shaver. With the shaver i would let her sniff it (unplugged ) and show her it was ok. I stopped making a big deal about it and now she is fine. The steamer is a whole different story!!!! She refuses to go anywhere near it. Good luck and let us know if the problem improves!!! | | | | |

| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 9:13am PST | | | | | | @ Koji: Thanks! I've been trying to 'desensitize' her to the noises. letting her sniff & give her treats. It was a bit frustrating.
@ Chad: Thanks also! It must have been a bit frustrating bc i found myself doing the deep inhale/exhale exercise many times! I'm glad he's forgotten all about it. you won't have to deal with it anymore, hopefully!
@Saki: Thanks! & I'm glad you added "unplugged"! haha. Are you still trying to get her used to the steamer?
**To all of you**
Though there are many pet owners out there that has/had gone through something like this with their pets, it's reassuring for me to hear your stories
That whole day I have been trying to make a lot of noise & giving her treats & praising her if she didn't run away from me. The day after that, she was COMPLETELY FINE! She forgot about it all together. Was I overreacting? Maybe. Or maybe it was a good thing that I tried to correct it right after. Maybe.
But later that night, we went to a memorial at the beach's pier. I had no idea there were going to be FIREWORKS! I felt horrible! She was somewhat afraid that she was standing over water & adding the loud noises from the fireworks made it worse. She was looking for cover, crawling & pulling me everywhere, shivering like crazy. We ran her back to the car, & what do you know? She's fine again the day after. I was sure she was going to be fearful of all loud noises from having that experience 2 days in a row, but she's alright.
Again, thanks for your response. Yuki & I are thankful to have buddies like you guys!

Pong Pong
are you gonna- finish that? |
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 9:55am PST | | | | | | omg I wished my dog would run away from plastic wrappers. They think whatever is crinkling is food and come running. I can't ever eat in peace without a nose sticking in my face.
On a serious note, just keep doing what you are doing. Keep associating noise with good treats and she'll get over it sooner or later. Don't give up!

| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 4:55pm PST | | | | | | @ Pong Pong: Thank you, pong pong! Such a cute name! I think you wouldn't want pong pong to be scared of wrapper/plastic/popping noises. I think either-or situation is a bug! | | | | |
