Kenji
1030763 |
| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 12:47pm PST | | | | | | Kenji is about 4.5 months old now and has gotten into serious 'back up' mode. If you go to pick him up, pet him from the front, or make any attempt to approach him, he backs up as if we were gonna scoop him up and toss him into a blender.
I realize that many dogs feel that a front approach is like being attacked in the wild, but is there anything we can do so that he is more relaxed with us?
Thanks!

Something like bits of hotdog, liver or cheese, and when he does a behavior you like (such as, coming to you, then coming over and staying etc.) treat well and praise gently, then get more excited as he gets more comfortable with the idea.

Suki
Unofficial Shiba- Inu Spokesdog |
| Barked: Tue Nov 3, '09 6:45pm PST | | | | | | Treats, high value treats (chicken, hot dogs, something healthy that he likes a LOT)! Keep a pouch on you, or a pocket full of them, and whenever you call his name & he looks at you treat him. Whenever you want him to come near treat him. Then start the use of a target at first, that might be a good way to bring him close, without him realizing that's what he's doing. Here's how you us a target in your training:
Use the lid to a butter container, or something flat and about that size. Put it on the floor and put a treat on it, tell the dog target, and make sure they see the treat. If he's afraind of your hand, point with your foot. Move the target around, fun places, places he likes to go. Each time tell Kenji "target" and show him the treat. It will become a game to him. Eventually move your hand closer to the lid, then soon you won't even need the lid, he'll just come to your hand when you say target. Treating him all the way.
Eyes is another great command, that builds the trust you will need. Call his name, and if he looks you square in the face give him a treat. Start saying "Kenji Eyes." He will get used to looking at your face and not your body as much. Put him in a sit, and treat him every time he looks at you when you say eyes. Little by little move around a bit, a step one way or the other, maybe a little bounce. Get him used to your movement.
Don't get frustrated in trying to work long time periods on these things. These are short burst training techniques, don't spend loads of time all at once, maybe as long as a commercial break during your favorite show. Let Kenji take a break, then pick it back up the next break...
Hope this helps. | | | | |

Saki
I'm a licker,- not a biter! |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 9:04am PST | | | | | | Just saw a Cesar show with a dog that would back up or attack when approached from the front. He put a container of treats by the dog and would have them reach for the treat (not the dog) and then while holding the treat (use something with a strong odor) do a slow circle motion in front of his nose. This will distract the dog and the focus will be on the treat and not the human. If your dog knows a trick (like hi five or shake) ask him to do the trick and then reward him. For some reason he has developed a fear and isn't trusting anyone when approached from the front. This will help him start trusting people again slowly. Make sure you have as many different people do this with him.
Good luck, let us know if our advise worked

Ronin
I'm a dedicated- napper. |
| Barked: Wed Nov 4, '09 4:15pm PST | | | | | | Ronin does this quite a bit. With him, I don't think it's fear of attack at all. It's just shiba stubbornness. Ronin wants things to happen on his terms, and he wants to get me to chase him whenever possible.
I am far from perfect at avoiding these scenarios, but it seems that "tricking" him into doing what I want is the best way. As suggested treats or toys are good lures. If he's in "chase me" mode, I don't try to get him to put his leash on for a walk, I go to the door, grab his leash, and if he wants to go outside, he'll come to me. I only pet him if he's too sleepy to run away, or when he comes to me looking for attention (A lot more common, now that he's an adult). that may seem kind of cold, but.... I knew when I decided to get a shiba I was getting a cat-like dog that didn't want or need constant attention.Edited by author Wed Nov 4, '09 4:16pm PST

Tank
i am NOT a- husky! |
| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 2:06pm PST | | | | | | tank would do this when he was that age (now 8 months) and we couldnt grab his collar...which is difficult if you're trying to take him to go potty! BOL. anyhow, our trainer told us to use treats (for everything basically) but especially for things they DONT LIKE...ie: touching their paws/tail, grabbing their collar, baths, etc. so...offer a treat to kenji, keeping holding it while he is nibbling it, and gently grab his collar. this associates getting near to him/collar grabs with good things like treats and love. i did the same with tank's curly tail: while he's nibbling the treat i'm holding i'd run my hand down his back and grab his tail. WORKS WONDERS. i couldnt believe my eyes. i even used treats to get him used to wearing doggie clothes BOL.
ps...i love your blog...its freaking HYSTERICAL. i have it saved to my fav's so i can look at it when i'm bored at work.

Tikka
This is me- ignoring you!

| Barked: Sun Nov 8, '09 7:15pm PST | | | | | | I use the sit command. When she sits, she will let me approach her, but if she is standing she will back away. I also pet her starting under her chin and then moving to the top of her head. She seems to tolerate this better. | | | | |
