Hey everyone!

Does this happen to your rotties in the winter? Living in Manitoba, Canada has its downsides, namely the winter months, but this year more than any, Lexi's paws are taking their toll (and she's only 3 1/2!).

They aren't cracking, but feel dry and look really 'worn' so to speak. When she runs around the house (especially the linoleum) she slides and has to avoid the cupboards or table. They just seem too smooth. She does have boots to wear outside, but they haven't seemed help much. A friend of mine says her 5 year old rottie has the same problem but prefers to stay inside anyways so I'm wondering if this is really a winter problem or just a breed/dog issue.

I don't want to invest in products that I don't need, but wondering how you are coping with similar situations.

It happens alot with age. Just make sure if there is any hair extending past the pads, you trim it. That will help some with the sliding. You can get "paw protector" which is a paste you put on the pads and up between the toes to protect the pads from salk etc. It does soften the pads, not toxic.

Hi Lexi; I think this is just a winter problem. If you walk outside where there's any salt/ice melter that gets on your paws, that can really make things worse. If you do walk through any of that, it might be a good idea to wipe your paws with a warm wet rag every time you come in. That's helped my boy out quite a bit. I'd try that out first, but then there are also commercial products for your paws to help them from getting cracked and rough. Good Luck!
