Hiya,

My name is Sadie. I am a 10 week old RR girl, and have a question.

As you can see from my pictures, I am very dark in colour. My coat is Red Wheaten on my head and underneath, and my ridge is a rich mahogany in colour. I also have some black hairs growing through my coat on top.

My question is, I have been told that I will get lighter as I grow up, until the age of about 18 months, and that I will lose my black hairs.

Does anyone know if this is indeed true, and have any of my fellow breed had the same colouring, only to lighten up later on?

Cheers,

Sadie.......Woof!

hey Sadie!

A LOT of Ridgebacks are born very dark, lots of black hairs on their body and its quite normal. Ridgebacks 99.9% of the time only come in 3 colors when mature- Light Wheaton, Wheaton, and Red Wheaton. Their coloring will change a bit as they grow older- some dogs will lighten and some dogs will darken. The darker the puppy when born the better chance you will have a Red Wheaton when they get older, and vice versa for light pups.

So dont be worried about the black hairs, she will grow up looking like a typical red wheaton Ridgeback! You've got a few more months yet! Enjoy the soft puppy coat while you can! smile
