Brody
Tiny boy, but he- has a huge- heart! |
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 6:40am PST | | | | | | Had an experienced raw feeder recommend rodentpro.com to me for variety. She said she buys mice, rats and guinea pigs from them. They are whole frozen prey. She defrosts and gives to her dogs. I have never heard of feeding this way, does anyone here do this? I can't imagine giving Brody a thawed out mouse for his dinner!!! | | | | |

I'm triple- superior MAD- now! |
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 7:14am PST | | | | | | There is another small dog in a family with ferrets that gets a lot of small whole prey, Copernicus. Maybe he will see this.
I give whole small fish like sardines and mackerel, guts and all. As I sit at a distance when he eats it isn't bad and I have pet fish.
A couple weeks ago I fed through a whole still born lamb. It took 5 days for him to finish it so I got to handle it every day. He ate on the grass so it needed to be washed off so I was really handling it!
It isn't necessary. It is a good idea, otherwise there are a lot of bits of the animal we don't get to feed. But you don't have to feed whole prey ever. And from other posters it isn't a good idea to invest in much until you know your dog thinks it is a good idea to eat a whole mouse or whatever!

Kitsune
aka Kit!!
|
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 7:36am PST | | | | | | I was thinking of trying this as well. I also have pet reptiles so getting frozen rats/mice is nothing new to me.
I heard that the dogs don't always eat them with the fur on at first, that you might have to skin them the first couple of times to get them to eat them.
I was thinking if trying rats with Kit eventually. I always hear from reptile people that rats are better/more nutritious than mice, so I kind of assumed the same goes for when you are feeding them to dogs.

Chloe
Clearance Puppy - The best of them- all. |
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 10:14am PST | | | | | | I bought chloe a rat, and she had fun playing with it.
I took it away and refroze it, I'm going to try it again because she ate the rabbit with he fur whole so i'm guessing she'll eat the rat.
I was looking at mice yesterday, but i think they were too small.
I have a question on top of this question:
When I fed chloe the rat, she was outside and there were files on the rat i'm guessing eating him too, I know there is a dieases that flies transmit but if I freeze the rat for liek 5 months in -17 celcius, will the parasite that the files transmit die?

Byron
It's all fur!
|
| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 11:16am PST | | | | | | I feed mice and chicks to my cat. He is enthralled with them. At first I thawed them, but now he'll eat them frozen, which is less messy (plus I don't have to think ahead ). None of the other cats or Byron will touch them, though, so it's no guarantee. I get them from rodentpro and have always had a good experience.
Rat was a bust. So was whole rabbit. I won't even try the guinea pig.
Problem is, even Lurch (cat) didn't like pinkies from the pet store, which were the only mice I could get OTC, so to speak. So I had to take the risk and buy a bag of the large mice - the white ones - and pay for shipping, in the hope someone would eat them. I got lucky with Lurch and the mice and chicks, but other experiments have been busts in our house.
Personally, I don't worry about flies. Although he won't take nice, healthful, expensive mice from me, Byron will happily munch up any trophies the cats leave on the patio. They've never given him a problem (unlike everything else). I could be taking a bigger risk than I realize, but I've also read about other dogs burying meals and digging them up days later.

| Barked: Fri Nov 6, '09 3:51pm PST | | | | | | we were doing the feeder mice for the cats. Holly wouldnt touch them, she didn't know what I was trying to get her to do with it. I haven't tried the others becase I'm sure I'd get a similar reaction. | | | | |

Behaving doesn't- always work for- me
|
| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 7:46am PST | | | | | | I tried it with Bo. I thawed a mouse and put it in his dish. He looked at me, looked at the mouse. Then he licked it. Then he picked it up and spit it. Then he picked it up and spit again. He nudged it. Then he picked it back up and took it in the living room and put it on the couch and licked and licked and licked and nudged and licked. I think he was trying to bring it back to life.
I tossed the mouse. | | | | |

Aro-ro-ro!

| Barked: Sat Nov 7, '09 8:50am PST | | | | | | We tried mice before with the dogs, just once. They were okay with it, not enthusiastic, and we have to order it online, so we haven't had it since because there're other prey we can buy locally. And way too small for Lantis! | | | | |
