Patch of feathers was out in the middle of an open field. Definitely didn't look like they were plucked. Looked like a tuft of feathers that come off when something grabs them. It's just weird that all 4 are just gone. Always cooped them at night. Just never suspected such a calamity during the day.

Thought I could get away with it. Clearly can't. May try to get some older birds at the swap next month. In the meantime, I'd need a bigger area to fence in for them. I just didn't want to clean poop, which is why I wanted them out. The fenced area for them was getting bare of grass and full of poop.

But we still managed to have fun today. Hiked 9.5 miles on a trail I'd never been down before. Really loved it. I think it'll be super beautiful once the leaves come in.

Fun days.

Beautiful pics Ty! Don't think your pups ever look bad, even when muddy.laugh out loud

My chickens are all gone.cry Two suspects...hawks and Kato. Doubt a hawk would take all 4 and leave absolutely no trace. I'm pointing the finger at Kato, but I'm seriously creeped out at how well he hid any evidence and knew to do it while I was at work. I've left him alone with the chicks plenty of times when I was doing yard work, in the house, or even out in the woods, and everything was fine. He definitely didn't eat them...his belly was not plump. No feathers anywhere in the yard. Looked around the 15 acres, didn't see anything. I noticed Kato wandering in a bit of field he sometimes buries things and found a very small batch of feathers. It was obvious they didn't just blow there...and the chickens never go out this far. Dug around a bit and didn't find anything. Even had 2 Labs out there, both of which are superb at finding dead things, and neither one of them found anything. My only hope is they managed to go to the neighbors and find a home with their chickens. Other than that, it doesn't look good. I'm seriously cursed at having birds of any sort.confused Really bummed out at this loss too.

That's good Sarah. I'm thinking I'm going to have to get picky with who I foster too. Kato is being a drama queen because all the dogs that have stayed with me have been great dogs...not domineering in the slightest, but Kato just won't stay in the same room...even sleeping in the bathroom closet. Thought he'd get over it, but he hasn't...and now it bothers me to hardly see him in the house.

So, I'm probably only going to foster puppies or scaredy/timid dogs. We'll see though...most pitties are pretty outgoing.laugh out loud

Isabelle, it's unfortunate that we have to pick and choose. But that's a part of life. And of course, people will only speak out on those making headlines and ignore the wonderful dogs not involved in any bites or in need of any work. But that's how it goes. The rescue I'm with had a similar issue. There was a dog they really wanted to pull from a high kill facility. And there was one woman who constantly posted she'd take them. Which was great! They went through the process with her, but realized that she has a few other pets. And the dog in question was HUGE and NOT good with other animals. The woman insisted she'd make it work. But everyone just saw a huge mess coming, so they told her no. Mostly for the safety of all the dogs, but also because of liability reasons that would hurt the rescue should anything happen, even if they made the lady sign every bit of paper relieving the rescue of all liabilities. And she's been making a fuss about how they'd rather have a dog die than go to a home. I don't think she quite understood what not good with other animals meant....

Thankfully, the dog went to another rescue. Maybe she'll go bother them now.

Beautiful day today! Decided to let the chickies free range today. Left Kato outside too. He's had zero interest in the chickens, so I'm hoping to come home to everybody alive and well.

Nicky, I didn't foster them. Just volunteered at their temp shelter. So glad all the pups went to rescues, but most of them will need A LOT of time. They were all friendly, just super scared. There were a few that wanted to be more outgoing, but just didn't know what to do, and would run back to their beds. The lady that does a lot of work for that organization says she much prefers busting dog fighting rings than puppy mills because the dogs in fighting rings are so much more outgoing. It's just a lot more work with the mill pups.

There was a white toy poodle puppy that was by far the favorite. I'm certain he'll be adopted really quick! Just remembered, they posted photos of all the dogs.

Here's the poodle pup.

This girl was my favorite. I couldn't get her out of her crate...too scared. But she wanted attention...you could tell. But we didn't push them.

Happy girl. I saw a video where a rescue let some of these dogs out, and I'm certain this dog, who I called Happy Girl, was one of them. She was so happy...would sprawl out or go belly up if you tried to pet her...again, just didn't know what to do, but you could tell she enjoyed it.

Ok last one: Scaredy

This dog was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo scared. One volunteer was able to get her out of the crate and into an exercise pen. You could not look at or face this dog or she would just run in circles. But if you sat down and turned your back to her, she'd paw at your back. Corralling her to get her back in her crate was tough because of this. I think she will be a tough one, but whoever gets her trust will have a great dog.

Sarah, maybe if you get a pretty easy going dog, it'd work out time wise. Not sure how involved you are with picking a dog.shrug

They're canceling a bunch of adoption events because of the dog flu outbreak in Chicago....even the stores down here, an hour away, are refusing to hold events. Hoping it passes soon!

I want to start planting so bad, but I know I need to wait until May.

Moe and Kato went to the vet today. As usual, Kato was scared and Moe was enjoying the attention. Both got their rabies, and I got Moe microchipped. Didn't chip him last vet visit since I wasn't sure if I'd keep him...so I guess it's official now.

Tried putting in a sand point well behind my house yesterday. Thought it'd be a simple thing since it's just sand out there, and water is easy to hit. We got the water but needed to go about 3 feet further to get it right, and of course hit rock right at that point. Tried 4 different spots and the rock is all at the same level! Ended up breaking a pipe and destroying some threading. Ugh, nothing is simple here!

Good luck Isabelle! Hope you get that job.

Obviously not every red head has a bad temper. I've known plenty of people with all different types of hair that had horrible temper. It's just the stereotype. Although I will say, every red head I've known well has had the worst temper lol! Maybe I'm just biased because my brother is a red head, so I grew up with it.

Offered to volunteer with the puppy mill pups. Scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Don't know what to expect since it's a temporary shelter, and they're basically sorting through all the dogs and trying to organize things so the pups can go to specific rescues. They sounded pretty organized though. Haven't handled a small breed dog in a few years, so this will be interesting. Saw a lot of chihuahuas and yorkis and a few poodles. I'm assuming most would need baths too, so I'm thinking more dirty work than just play with the pups, which I'm fine with too.

Not sure if they'll be in the court system long since it said she surrendered them. There have definitely been worse puppy mills, but this was still a bad situation.

Any way to measure Sarah with her laying on her side? Not sure how exact a measurement you need.

Also felt like sharing a video of the lab I'm watching. She has to walk through every little puddle she sees, but she was so wary of the creeks. On tonight's walk, she was splashing through the creek like she'd been doing it all her life. And apparantly, she's now a musk rat hunter.

All I'll say is that I steer clear from people with short fuses. My brother was like that when we were younger, and he did so many regrettable things to me when I'd set him off. I'll admit, sometimes I deserved it a little because it was a bit of a game for me to see how angry I could make him, but there were times where I was quite scared of him. He's mellowed out a lot, but he has that stereotypical red-headed temper.

Also just wanted to say that they finally busted the puppy mill here!dancingcheercloud 9doghappy dancesnoopykittyblue dog

The lady running it honestly thinks there's nothing wrong. She's been given the okay for years by shady people in those gov. positions. She's finally done. Some 80 small dogs were pulled. They haven't listed what rescues are taking them yet, but 80 dogs is a lot to take in, so I'm sure they'll go to different rescues. But the great thing is the press is there, so it won't go unnoticed!

Didn't know that about the medicated stuff Toto. I bought a small medicated starter when I first got them, but they have been on the non-medicated starter since about 3-4 weeks old. I didn't think they'd have any issues being on the regular feed. Just thought I'd ask since everyone seems to say something different!

Hope the ice melts! Every time I think of moving up north, I'm reminded of the LOOONG winters. Don't know if I could stand it. I like my warmth, but I also need a change of seasons.

Can't believe you have to mow already Flicka! I don't mind mowing, but I have so much to mow, I usually have to race the storms. On and off showers for here is the forecast too.

Here is the lab I'm watching with the chickens.

She went from wanting to eat them, to trying to play with them, to grazing around with them. This lab eats EVERYTHING. And even the tiny chicken feed crumbles are enough to make her graze around, trying to get every last bit. I can't take her for a walk without her eating something...usually poop. Ick! Now I know why she's so fat!

Happy Easter all!

Toto, when do you switch from chicken starter to regular feed? I have about 2 weeks of starter left and the chickies are going on 9 weeks. I've scattered some of the regular feed around for them to pick at, but the majority of their intake is still the starter.

Thought about going to an animal swap next Saturday and trying to trade the rooster for a pullet.....but I'm getting attached to him.laugh out loud I didn't want a rooster and will probably regret keeping him, but he's the nicest one of the bunch. I am so bad at this lol.
