I attatched Kitsune's leash to my belt loop when he was a puppy, so he had to stay near me. I think it would be very hard to train if you leave them alone a lot and can't confine them at all. Hopefully, if you really can't crate, you have someone at home at all times who can work with them? Or maybe like Sabi mentioned, get some baby gates or make your own pen.
I'd consider reevaluating the pee pads. I know they work well for some people, but I'll tell you they did not work at all for Kitsune. He's a smart dog, but couldn't seem to get the concept of why it was okay to use the bathroom on pads but not all over the rest of the house. Also keep in mind, that to some dogs a pee pad looks very similar to, say, an area rug, a blanket, etc. I think we had that issue with Kitsune. He would go on the pee pads, but then he also started going on our area rugs and blankets and stuff like that.
If you want to train them to go indoors, I'd personally make or buy them some kind of a litter box type thing that has a surface that is more distinct than just a pee pad. I know some people use sod, or synthetic grass. Maybe pelleted litters (Feline Pine, Yesterday's News, etc if you can find them where you are) because the pellets are heavier than clay litter and might not get spread around the house as easily. I think, for some dogs, the key is to make the potty area totally distinct from all the other surfaces in the house. So the dogs learn that they can go on litter, or grass, but because there is no other grass (or whatever) in the house they just go in the one spot.
White vinegar works well for cleaning pet accidents, plus it's cheap!
Good luck! Potty training Kitsune was so frustrating. It can be a lot of work, but it's well worth it! Kitsune is 4 now and I can't even remember the last time he went in the house.

Raw Food Diet > A Paw in the Door?
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Thu May 16, '13 1:22pm PST | | | | | Right now, Kitsune is on a combination of kibble and raw. Since Kitsune has bad food allergies and can't eat any poultry at all, raw is expensive for us. We're having some financial issues right now, so until we get things back to normal again I decided to switch him from 100% raw to a combination of raw and high quality, grain free, kibble/canned foods.
The combination has been working fine for us - no issues. I personally usually feed kibble in the morning, and then either raw or canned food in the evenings. He ends up getting anywhere from 50% to a bit less of raw a week, depending on what I have available to give him.
I make sure to give him a RMB at least once a week to help keep his teeth nice and clean. Plus he really enjoys them.
Maybe not ideal but it's been working for us. I'm planning on switching him back to full raw when I can, but for now I'd rather give him partial raw then none at all.

Love love loooove Papillons! Kitsune is one too, although he's far from the breed standard (he's 20 lbs )
Cut the grass? Or maybe look for wet spots under Buttons? When Kitsune was a puppy, he didn't squat like a girl dog does, but he did have this little pose he'd do to pee. He didn't just go standing up normally - he'd position his back legs a bit differently. Kind of with his back legs out further back than when he'd stand normally, with his knees bent a bit. Does Buttons do anything like that?
Good luck! Button is adorable! Take lots of pictures - they don't stay puppies for long!

Raw Food Diet > Doesn't like green tripe?
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Mon Apr 15, '13 12:20pm PST | | | | | Thanks for the replies. It was beef tripe I tried with him. I don't think I'm going to go crazy trying other types. I just kept reading about how much dogs love it, so wanted to try giving him some. But he's not showing any interest in eating it at all. Oh well. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > Doesn't like green tripe?
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Sat Apr 13, '13 6:10pm PST | | | | | So what's the secret to getting dogs to eat green tripe?
I read so many owners rave about how much their dog's love it. I finally got some for Kitsune, for the first time, and he won't touch the stuff.
Does anyone else have a dog that doesn't like it?

Dog Health > Thoughts on Chicken Intolerances
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Sun Mar 10, '13 4:31pm PST | | | | | I've heard that chicken allergies are pretty common, as far as allergies to proteins go. I don't know exactly how common or much about intolerances rather then allergies.
Kitsune is allergic to chicken. It causes him GI upset as well as allergy symptoms such as swelling, itchy skin, and hives.
With Clyde and Louie, how do you know it was the chicken in the food and not another ingredient that bothered him? Something, other than chicken, that could have been in the chicken kibble but not the lamb and rice/limited fish kibbles. Have you ever tried feeding either of them actual chicken? Or treats/chews with chicken in them? Did those bother them too? If you buy commercial treats, check the ingredients. A lot of them, even ones that are not chicken flavor, seem to contain chicken.
There can be a lot of other ingredients in kibble, other then the protein source, that can bother dogs. Not every food is perfect for every dog. I wouldn't automatically assume it's the chicken that's bothering them, although it could be.
But just to give you an example - I've recently been trying to help a friend pick a higher quality kibble for her dog. She tried giving him a chicken based kibble and it gave him pretty bad GI issues. The next food she tried was a limited ingredient kibble, also chicken based, and the dog is doing great on it so far. So it seemingly wasn't the chicken in the first food that bothered him, but perhaps some other ingredient or something else about the food.

Dogster Lifestyle, News & Entertainment > Monthly subscription service of amazing goodies for your dogs⦠any recommendations?
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Tue Mar 5, '13 8:18pm PST | | | | | We had Kitsune signed up for BarkBox for awhile. We liked it. The stuff they sent was all pretty high quality. Kitsune has food allergies, so some of the treats we weren't able to give him, but other then that I never really had any complaints. They don't send food though - usually just treats and toys. A few times we got grooming supplies too.
Actually, I have a pet blog and wrote a bunch of BarkBox reviews. If you want to take a look you can see what we got each month: Paw Print Pet Blog BarkBox Reviews
If you do decide to sign up, you can use our referral link to save $5 off your first order. Just copy/paste this URL: https://barkbox.com/r/8XgSxmqMEF/
I've heard of other dog subscription services but haven't tried any others yet. I think eventually I'll probably try some of the others as well. I think I have just as much fun as Kitsune does seeing what we get each month

Dogs and a Clean Home > A vacuum that works please!

Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Tue Mar 5, '13 7:41pm PST | | | | | We have a Shark Navigator. We've had it awhile now and it's still awesome. I put that thing though heck too So much cheaper then a Dyson, which is what everyone seems to recommend, and IMO it works just as well as Dyson (my parents have a Dyson so I have used one).
I thought about getting a Dyson before, but don't think I ever would now. When/if our current Shark goes, I'll probably just get another.

Dog Laws & Legislation > Dog tags
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Thu Feb 21, '13 6:20pm PST | | | | | Etsy always has some cute, unique dog tags.
I bought Kitsune a "enamel jewelry tag" from Luckypet.com (I also found the same style tags for sale on both Amazon and Ebay) and really like it. The first one we got we've had since Kitsune was a puppy, 4 years now, and it still looks awesome.
I liked it so much that I got him another one, so now he has one on his harness and one on his collar. To me they look nicer then your average dog tag. They have a handful of designs, including a heart and a bone, and each design comes in a bunch of different colors.
They have a lifetime guarantee on their tags as well, and from what I hear are good about honoring it.

Dog Health > nose changing color--is something wrong?
Kitsune
Divide and- cuddle!! |
| Barked: Thu Feb 14, '13 7:26am PST | | | | | Kitsune scraped his nose on part of our fence a couple of months ago - the area he hurt was pink instead of it's normal black for awhile. It didn't bleed or look bad or really bother him at all, it was just a little pink area. Once he healed up, his nose went back to normal again. Maybe it could be something like that? | | | | |
