Service & Therapy Dogs > Thinking about Carting dose anyone else do this?

If you are going to have her pull something like that, you need to have her hips and elbows x-rayed and you need to use the appropriate gear. Maximum weight pulled and distance will depend on several factors including the dog's endurance, terrain, tires, etc.

While Bully breeds are being used for weight pulling, it is in no way the same as carting a load for distance. The dogs pull for short distances only and in some of the competitions I've had dogs entered, it is common for them to pull 100X their own body weight on a flat track.

Service & Therapy Dogs > Stop bringing me my test meter already!

Have you stopped to realize that the dog may be alerting (way) ahead of the meter? Some can be 30 minutes quicker, so unless you are doing repeat testing, you won't know it.

It's becoming more common with the ADBA APBTs; they do, however, require the animal be DNA'd before the samples are stored and all pups must be DNA'd before they will register the litter.

Raw Food Diet > heartworm preventative...yes or no?

The preventatives don't kill adult heart worms; they kill the microfilaria stage of the worm. Better to kill them off monthly than to let them mature. Heartworm infestations have occurred as far north as Alaska and northern Canada; basically, if you have a mosquito season, you have a heartworm season.

Service & Therapy Dogs > Exactly why are puppies from breeders a better choice than a rescue?

A prominent West Coast program decided to use shelter dogs. Only 1 in 100 made it. The number washouts was disproportionately higher because they couldn't health test before pulling the animal. The same program decided it would be better to discontinue using shelter dogs and instituted their own breeding colony; they now have a 7 in 8 success rate. The main programs that have had immense success with shelter dogs are the programs using them as hearing dogs for in-home only use.

Zoey, you seem to be missing the point that everytime someone flashes a scam registry id, the people seeing it expect the same from the next team they meet. You can also get nicer patches elsewhere for less, including ones that look exactly like thiers minus the registry name.

You are better off carrying a couple copies of the 'business brief' to pass out to ignorant gatekeepers.

And those that use fake/scam registries and carry documentation make it harder on the teams that come behind them that refuse to do so because those businesses like to point out "Well, the last person had it."

And do you really want to flaunt that you have paperwork from the same scam that Cesar Millan is registered with and openly admits that Junior is a "Service Dog for other dogs"? I know what I think when I see a dog sporting their "paperwork" and patches.

Service & Therapy Dogs > Which law applies to county jails?

I've worked at both a county jail and at the state level as a CO. Jails and prisons aren't a place of public accommodation like your local bank or store. Generally (at least in the places I've worked), one must be pre-approved to visit and part of that process involves a background check; that's before they start looking at what is "reasonable" to accommodation. I've been in jails with only one correctional officer; for them to handle a SD team, they would have to call in additional staff and limit the visit to certain hours. I've also seen instances where the animal wasn't allowed access, but the person was allowed an attendant. It comes down to how best keep everyone involved safe.

County lock up, we'd completely shake down the dog/handler and you'd get a non-contact visit for your safety. State level, contact/non-contact would be determined by the inmate's custody; you'd both still be shook down and your visit may be held either in a secluded area or on a non-typical visitation day for the team's safety.

Actually, Dino, they want no pets period and their own shelter has a higher kill rate than some of the worst cities in the country AND they've been known to pull adoptable dogs only to immediately kill them in the back of their death vans.

I've never heard of them coming up with something better.

Behavior & Training > My one year old female pitbull is starting to show signs of aggression

Let me qualify my reply by stating what a lot of folks on here already know... I've got nearly 3 decades in the breed and am still VERY active in showing and pulling.

She's maturing. Some DA is to be expected. That said, you aren't doing her any favors by not adequately exercising her. A couple of hours loose isn't the same as structured exercise.

A tired, well exercised dog is a happy dog. Most of mine do 5-10 miles on the treadmill at least every other day or they become like springs that have been wound too tight. That's on a typical day. If I'm getting them ready for a show or pull, they get worked everyday on a set schedule depending on what they are going to be doing (show, pull, or both).

Second, a basket muzzle is not uncomfortable for a dog to wear. I recently came back from living abroad for nearly 4 years. During certain times of the year, my dog had to wear not only a basket muzzle, but a special cover over it so that it could act as a mask to ensure he wasn't breathing in micro particles of yellow dust/sand. It literally took me a few minutes for me to get him accustomed to wearing it and he quickly caught on that when I brought it out, it meant that we were going outside. On days that the count was up, he wore it every time he stepped outside, even if it was just for a quick potty break. I can pull it out now and he'll happily wag his tail while running to have it put on.

Third, the small dog you said she jumped on had been bothering her previously and on that day. Part of YOUR job is to prevent things like that. I can understand that you'd be somewhat worried that she may do the same to your mini doxie; your best bet is to not let your other dog overly harass her.

Finally, in a well bred APBT, HA is practically non-existent. In general, one form of aggression does not typically lead to the other.

Trigger, you summed up my thoughts. I suspect we're all just banging our heads against the wall here.
