Behavior & Training > Lancer's reactivity problem risen- nearly runs to his death

This is why I am not a fan of some petsmart trainers! All dogs need different training.
In my experience I think a harness is a big no no for a dog with lunging or reactivity problems.
Why are you giving them all the power?
My dogs wear their harnesses only for pulling( we rollerblade). I could never imagine walking them on their harness.
What about a gentle leader? That could give you the control over his head and grab his attention. If that is still not working you could try a prong collar, thats my favorite tool.
The pinch can sometimes snap them right out of their mindset, and gives you control. Although i have seen the prong collar work in the opposite way and make the dog more reactive.
Look up the dominant dog collar, that is really good, fallsafe if your harness or anything else becomes unclipped. Looks like you need a new trainer for him

Dog Health > Dog ate hair?

Rascal

Depending on how long the hair was I would be concerned if she doesn't get better soon. Long hair could work like string and cut up her intestines. If that happens, shes in for big trouble. Id take her in if she doesn't eat normal and stool doesn't become normal soon.

Is she on any meds? Sometimes medications will cause them not to eat well. It could take her longer to fully recover and act normal again.

Slow feed bowl 100%. I got the healthy eating anti-gulp bowl from amazon. And I love it. He eats much slower and has less gas. He eats on par with the normal eater now.
When we are traveling I fill the bottom of a regular bowl with water.

Could be a reaction to flea preventive. If so she needs a bath in dawn dish soap to strip it off. Otherwise something else could be going on

Dog Health > Parvo/Distempter Vaccine Questions

Rascal

Silly

Barked: Sat Jan 5, '13 12:58pm PST
They do have a 3 yr DHP vaccine. Much better then annual.
But if you truly don't want to vaccinate your dog you can run titers to see if they are still carrying the antibodies for the specific viruses.
Most dogs probably do have immunity for things alot longer the the labeled vaccine.
My dogs are around other dogs, vet clinics, wildlife. So they get their lepto vaccine annually and DHP and Rabies every 3 yrs.
Although I may stop vaccinating my older dog (8 yrs) for DHP soon

Dog Health > How Cold is Too Cold to Walk?

Rascal

Silly

Barked: Fri Dec 28, '12 4:47pm PST
Biggest thing I notice is their feet. I have husky mixes and even when they go out for 10 minutes to pee in the yard, they get frozen feet.
I would get him boots if you plan on taking him for longer walks in the cold and it protects their feet too from salts etc.
It takes a while for them to get used to them, but usually if you throw them on right before you walk then they should walk on shortly after and start getting used to it.
I actually use boots when I run my dogs in the summer so they don't scrape off their paw pads

Dog Health > DAPP Vaccination?

Eduardo..
I would be very careful with your dog. Distemper is not as common in some places, but there has been many REAL cases of distemper in places like FL.
Parvo is an absolutely horrible, deadly, expensive and REAL disease.
Never giving your dog any immunity to these are purely irresponsible for your dog and the public.
The reason why we don't see rabid animals often and cases of distemper is because of Vaccines! do I believe animals should be vaccinated yearly? NO.
Vaccines last a lot longer in most cases then labeled for. But you are taking a huge risk on your dogs life by never vaccinating. Unless he lives in a bubble of course
