Dog Health > The ER vet said my dog had a soft tissue injury in her paw
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Sun Mar 3, '13 3:45am PST | | | | | I feel like a horrible pet owner. My six year old poodle was running under my feet and I didn't see her. I was walking and heard her yelp. I stepped on her paw. At first she seemed fine, just mad at me. She is normally bouncing off the walls hyper, but after stepping on her she began favoring her paw, shaking, and hiding in her crate. She would not go up and down the stairs.
I took her to the ER vet who diagnosed a soft tissue injury. Trixie was still occasionally putting a little weight on it. She is on Tramadol. Now that she is back home, she still isn't acting like herself.
She hides in her crate given the chance, and is curling up next to me to sleep. She is never clingy, but now is. She can't jump on my bed like she normally does so I pick her up. She just seems spacey.
I'm worried it's worse than a soft tissue injury.

Food & Nutrition > Switching dogs off of Bentiful, suggested brands? Question about Beggin Strips.
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Mon Feb 25, '13 11:08pm PST | | | | | My family's four dogs currently eat Bentiful. I was wondering what a healthier, but affordable, alternative was? We have a 10 year old yorkie, five year old poodle, eight month old CAviler and 3 month old American Eskimo puppy (she eats puppy food, but does ocassionally steal a bit of adult food).
I was also wondering if Beggin strips are okay for dogs? I've read of recalls of other treats by the same company, but have not heard anything in regards to these treats. My family's dogs get about 1/2 a beggin strip a day when they are crated.

Rescue, Adoption & Happy Endings > Making the choice to put a dog up for adoption?
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Fri Nov 2, '12 12:02pm PST | | | | | My family has been discussing the possibility of re- homing our miniature poodle for several weeks. It is just a thought at this point, we have made no definitive decisions.
She is a healthy girl. Within the past month she had a full blood work up, and xrays to make sure nothing was wrong with her legs. Everything came back okay, and she is healthy.
She is a very one person dog, and has recently become aggressive towards my family's three other dogs and our cats. It started after my American Eskimo dog died. My poodle had been the under dog until then, but now it seems she is vying for a dominate position in the pack.
I'm waiting to hear back from a behaviorist recommended by my vet, to see if they can help me out with her behavior problems.
She is five and spayed.
It almost seems like she would be better as an only dog, as she gets jealous so easily.

Behavior & Training > My poodle is picking fights with my other dogs and cats. A new behavior.
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Thu Oct 11, '12 9:41am PST | | | | | My poodle is frustrating me to no end. Her behavior has changed since my 13 year old American Eskimo dog passed away in late August. She used to be very timid and submissive to my American Eskimo who held the highest position in the pecking order between my family's four dogs. She was submissive to my brother's Yorkie and my mom's dog as well. She played with the cats.
Within the past month she has become confrontational with almost every other animal. She growls and chases the cats. Sometimes it is related to food though. She is possessive of her toys. Lately she will go after our other dogs for no reason. The other dogs will just be standing there and she goes after them.
She has been doing this to the puppy as well. I'm afraid she is going to hurt him. She used to play with him, now she is just being mean
I thought it was jealousy of the puppy at first, but then she began acting out against the other animals.
She did seem to be having pain with her back legs for a while, but my vet still has not gotten her xrays back (it has been a week and a half), so I'm not sure if anything is going on or not.
Could she perhaps be in pain? I know my American Eskimo began biting after she was diagnosed with cancer.
She is also the only female dog in the household. Our other three are male. Everyone is fixed except for the puppy who is due to be neutered within the next month or two.

Dog Health > Something is wrong with my poodle's back legs. No idea what.
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Fri Oct 5, '12 6:36pm PST | | | | | My poodle Trixie is 5 years old (I thought she was six) has had trouble with her back legs off and on for a couple of weeks.
At times she limps, and has almost fallen over a couple of times. She seems stiff in the back end. But she still runs around and jumps on furniture. If I had not seen her limping, I would have had no idea anything was wrong. My vet was surprised when I brought her in, she showed no symptoms when getting x-rays.
She was examined by the vet, who noticed she seemed stiff in the back end, and whimpered a bit when they pressed on her back legs.
She was tested for lyme disease, which showed nothing. She had a full blood panel which game back showing she was healthy. She had x-rays of her back legs. I am still waiting for the results to come back to my vet from the radiologist.
I'm just at a loss with her behavior and nothing showing up in the testing. My vet said it could be neurological, but how would you even test for something like that? Perhaps she pulled something in her back? I wonder if they think I'm crazy, but I know something is going on. She isn't acting right.
If they x-rays don't show anything, I'm not sure what else I could do for her. Could she have arthritis at 5 years old?

Dog Health > How fast does cancer spread?
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Mon Oct 1, '12 5:49pm PST | | | | | I'm very sorry for what your family is going through right now. I lost my 13 year old American Eskimo Dog to cancer in August. Her organs were full of tumors, and we had found out in May of this year. The vet who did the ultrasound pretty much told me to euthanize right away, but I listened to my regular vet instead. Even full of tumors, my girl lived another three months with the help of several medications to make her more comfortable. In the beginning I thought she had maybe two weeks, but then the months passed. When it came time to put her down, I knew. She had stopped eating and just seemed distant. I was with her the entire time, and was able to say goodbye to her. After she was gone the vet told me they had not expected her to live more than a month, she surprised everyone.
I don't think you can ever know how long your dog has left, it depends on so many things. My girl was a fighter, and your dog sounds like one as well

Behavior & Training > My dog limps on different legs. Could she be faking?
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Mon Oct 1, '12 2:56pm PST | | | | | I'm sorry, I actually meant they re-tested her again for Lyme disease last week. The panel came back negative. Her blood test results should be back today, just waiting for the vet to call. She is going to have x-rays tomorrow.
She still had trouble over the weekend, and just seems "stiff" in the back end. She has not been limping as much, but does occasionally seem to lose her balance, but always catches herself. She still runs around and jumps on furniture and my bed. I'm confused as to the limping, if she is still so active. She does seem more agitated than usual though. She is starting fights with my puppy and my mom's dog.
My family now has a baby gate at the top of the steps, due to her balance issues. We do not want her falling down the steps.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed my vet can figure this out. Trixie is around 6, so not terribly old. The vet did mention it could be arthritis, but could that happen in a 6 year old dog?

Behavior & Training > My dog limps on different legs. Could she be faking?
Trixie
If I find it,- its mine |
| Barked: Fri Sep 28, '12 4:41pm PST | | | | | My poodle is 6 years old. We went to the vet this afternoon as an emergency. She was limping again and lost her balance, almost falling over. She had been jumping and running around earlier in the day, playing with my puppy.
She had a fever and whimpered when the vet pressed on her back legs. She tested negative for Lyme disease. She is currently on an antibiotic and pain medication. The vet is running a full blood panel to see if that shows anything, if not, she is scheduled for x-rays next Tuesday.
The vet did mention she could have pulled something in her back, or it could be a disk since she has been favoring both legs.
She continues to run around and jump on everything at home, and is eating well.
I am determined to get to the bottom of this though.
I can't stand seeing her in pain
