I started using "leave it" when she sniffs Groucho (the one that has been here since before her and that does not run). She knows "leave it" and "leave it, that's not yours" for when she gets the cat toys. She responds will to these commands. I am trying to get her to focus on me when the cats walk in the room. I made up my own word for this. Actually Daisy picked the word, bol! I tried "look" and "look at me" but she kept watching the cat. When I said "focus" she jerked her toward me and perked up watching me. Everyone that comes around the pets knows or will know about "focus". Daisy is actually a pretty quicker learner with most commands. So far "focus" is working great! I figured this behavior needed a command of its own because it is a very important one to me.

The cats have plenty of safe spaces. Two cat trees in different rooms, on my bed, under my bed, behind the couch. They are all quick and easy for the cats to get to and impossible for the pug!

Daisy Mae was on Blue Wilderness until recently. She did great on it. The only reason I switched her is because she has what I think/thought was seasonal allergies. They were bad this year all winter long, but we had a fairly mild winter the past two years. I switched her to Wellness Simple, the grain free formula because I am trying to eliminate anything that might have been exacerbating her allergies.

I went to PetSmart tonight and talked to one of the associates there and explained my situation. She said they make a dog version of Feliway. It is called ComfortZone with D.A.P. (dog appeasing pheromones). It is supposed to simulate the scent lactating dogs give off to comfort their pups. It is for dogs with high anxiety. Daisy has separation anxiety. Hopefully this helps. Between this and re-training her to "leave it" with the cats. I had my mom do some research for me while I was at work today, I am going to try the ComfortZone, re-training and watch her more closeLy. Any time I see her staring at either cat, I need to get her to redirect her attention and no longer allow her to bark at the cats. She is a quick learner so hopefully this won't be too difficult to do. Wish us luck!

Behavior & Training > Why is my dog afraid of rooms he has not been in?

Could it be the flooring? Is your kitchen tile flooring while the rest of your house is carpeted? Our old dog would walk on our tile floor but hated walking on my Grandma's tile floor. Sorry I can't help, it was just a thought I had.

I have one dog, a three year old pug named Daisy, and two cats. Groucho is four and was here before Daisy so she has always known him. The other cat is Parker. He is between 7 and 9 years and has lived with us for about 9 months. He came from a friend of a friend and lived here once before for a few months. He is here to stay this time. Parker came to me in August and everyone got along fine. A few months ago, my parents went out of town for a month and my mom's cat was here for that time. Daisy would chase her through the house occasionally. Lately, Daisy has been chasing Parker through the house. It is like she is going after him. She will try to corner him, but doesn't try to hurt him. Other times Daisy will not walk past Parker, or if she does, she watches him closely like he is going to attack her, which has never happened. Daisy does not do this with Groucho. I have started to notice a pattern with the chasing. Sometimes it is if Parker jumps down from the cat tree and runs or like just now, Parker was hanging out by the bathroom door while I was getting ready for work. This is where Daisy usually lays.

How do I stop the chasing? Right now, I am telling Daisy "no chasing" and then she gets sent outside. I am not sure what to do as a discouragement/punishment for chasing. Daisy usually does pretty well with basic commands and will at least look at me when I say her name, but when she is chasing Parker she is only focused on him.

I there something like Feliway that works for dogs and cats? I know Feliway worked with my mom's cat here (her cat is used to being an only pet). I think it worked a little bit with Daisy and I am going to go buy more diffusers tomorrow after work, but I wondered if there was a dog verse of it also.

Could this be a territorial thing? Daisy is used to being on my lap all the time when I am sitting, but I am slowly breaking this habit and make her lay on the floor in a pet bed some of the time. I am willing to do anything to help have a harmonious household again.

There are no known health issues with any of the animals. Daisy and Groucho go to the vet regularly. I am not sure what Parker's vet history is. His previous owner was not great at taking him. He is going to go to my vet soon to get his vaccinations soon. I am not sure when he last had them, if he had them before he came. The owner is no longer in contact with our mutual friend and I have no way to contact him. I know Parker never had a problem with dogs before and Daisy never had a problem with cats before. This all stared in the past few months.

I don't think vets are always willing to admit when a medication can cause a problem. There are multiple vets that work at the clinic I take Daisy Mae to. They head guy, the one with his name on the building, did not think that the Trifexis Daisy was taking could be a cause for her seizures, when there was a pattern to the seizures occurring within one week of her taking the pill, I decided to take her off of it. One of the other vets agreed, that while rare, could be a possible cause. Your friend should go with her gut. Hopefully it is only the sentinel and the side effects wear off soon.

I recently took my pug off of Trifexis after 10 months. She had 4 seizures in that times. The first one was three weeks after her first dose, the other 3 were with one week of taking the Trifexis. Luckily, I have not had a flea problem with this dog. If I did, I would choose a topical treatment, like Frontline.

Behavior & Training > Cannot crate train for house training

Daisy Mae

Can you gate him in one room? When I inherited my grandmother's dog, I could not crate him. She used the crate as punishment and for when she left. She was older and did not know better. I bought a baby gate with may extensions and blocked him in the kitchen at night and when I was gone. He was in renal failure at this time and would often urinate in the house even if I let him out just before bed or before I left for work. I would not punish him for that because I knew that he could not help it. Even though he was 12 years old, he had never been properly housebroke. My grandmother got the dog from her nephew who pretty much dumped him with her (he moved in, got the dog, moved out and never came back for the dog). The dog responded well to room-gating, instead of crating.

Behavior & Training > my dog wont come when I call her

Daisy Mae

I have a hard time with this with my dog as well. She just turned 3 years. She will listen if she is playing a game with my mom and I where we stand at different ends of my yard and call her. She loves to run back and forth, whether we have treats or not. I know, for my dog, it is hard to teach her "come" because she rarely is away from to for me to need to call her. She will stay and come when I call her in the house, but when she goes outside she loses her hearing laugh out loud. I will call her and she will sit right where she is at and will stay there until I go get her. She has trained me well on that one, I guess. When I go call her outside she will stop in her tracks and sit on command as well.

Behavior & Training > Try the Dog Personality Test
Daisy Mae

Daisy Mae got double red flags for "attachement/attention-seeking" because she is a velcro dog. This was not a surprise to me. She was also red-flagged for energy and grooming because she is basically a couch potato and HATES for her toes to be touched for trimming. Everyone I have talked to said pugs are notorious for hating their toes touched (the groomer and vet said this). Daisy also hates to be wet and acts like baths are a punishment. I was surprised she did not get red-flagged for seperation problems. Maybe that is because she gets a treat when she goes in her crate when I leave or go to bed. That is the only time she gets treats, so to her crate=treats. She loves to go in her crate, but once the treats are gone, I better be out of sight or she cries.

She received gold starts for everything else!
