Ember-can you post links or more information regarding beef heart causing nutritional deficiencies? It is one of our staples, and I see no problem with it. As long as some variety is offered, what deficiencies can it cause?

I was trying to post a link but blogspot (dot) com is not a G rated word.

Anyways, I belong to a coOp, have a farmer/supplier and shop at both traditional and ethnic groceries. I spend on average $200 a month to feed three large dogs. I feed mostly red meat, with the majority of that being heart from various species. I am currently feeding lots of venison.

I also have generous friends, coworkers and complete strangers. I guess if one wants to see, copy, paste, remove spaces.

Wonderful!

You'd be surprised at how strong little jaws are. Offer her the neck, see if she can work on it before you go about bashing it. If she does need help, hitting it with a mallet, as opposed to grinding or liquefying it is the best, in my opinion.

I feed spleen fairly often. I think it smells awful, and hate portioning it, but my 3 love it!

Samson-you are in Indiana? Do you have a Marsh nearby? They currently have Boston Butts on sale for $0.98 per pound. I bought four 3-4 pounders today, and 3 of them were boneless. I also have a Northern Indiana supplier who gets me great variety at great prices.

Send me a PM, and we can connect via FB if you want, and I'll share my source.

For more variety and red meat, you could feed heart. Pork and beef hearts are typically available at most ethnic groceries, and a very affordable source of red meat. I know you are wanting bone-in pieces, so ou could try ribs, oxtail, pork neck, etc.

Different species provide differing amounts of various nutrients, minerals in particular. Maxwell is well versed in nutrients, maybe he will provide some more info.

You do need to feed another organ, besides liver. It can be spleen, kidney, pancreas, thymus, brain, testicles, etc.

I have used Windmill and Nature's Bounty. Windmill is available through the retail pharmacy at the the hospital I work at. The label states "No Soy" so I assume the mixed tocopherols are from a sunflower source.

I get finest Nature's Bounty at Kroger. They frequently have it buy one get one free. Some of theirs are soy-free as well, I make sure to read the label.
