Raw Food Diet > finicky dog problem :(

I have a few questions about raw feed...I read that wheat is not good (grains) but ther vitamins we give Max have wheat germ as an ingredient so we were wondering if they are ok to give? We need to give him vitamins because 1) he is an old dog 2) he doesn't always want to eat full amount of raw meat. We are also having difficulty getting him to eat bone. He refuses any chicken right now, 2 weeks ago he loved chicken, wings, legs turkey necks, last week he loved pork bones-now he wants none of them. Even tried giving him marrow bone-once marrow was half gone we stuck a pork bone thru the middle. This worked for a few days but today he wants nothing to do with it. Tried smearing peanut butter on it-he licked off the peanut butter-left pork rib bone behind. Anyone else have a finicky dog? Is there another way of getting bone in him-do they sell powdered bone? We are getting worried because he looks like he is loosing weight. He weighs about 85-90 now and eats between 2-3 pounds of meat a day-not an active dog...any suggestions on any of my problems would be great.

Can cheese (land o lakes sliced cheese) be given on a raw feed diet? Max has loved this cheese for years, actually it was one of the things that would get him to eat kibble. Now even on raw he is finicky so was wondering if cheese could be given a treat.

Max has been on raw feed for 1 month-eating chicken, pork and starting beef. When he first started he drank a little less and peeing was a little less as well as small poops. For some reason now he is back to drinking a little more and peeing frequently...is this common? Also when we fast him for a day can he have marrow bones as a treat? he loves those http://www.dogster.com/forums/post.php#

What type of pork bones are ok for a 95lb GSD? He is not a gulper..chews his food/chicken bones real good. We are switching him from chicken/turkey to pork..it is hard to give him chicken(thighs, wings, quarters) or even turkey necks because after being on chicken/turkey (necks)he now snubs these foods and only wants pork. Yes he is like a stubborn child. We have some pork ribs-hopefully this with boneless pork chops will be ok. Any suggestions on pork bones????

Woof...Max (our 11 yr old GSD) has been on raw food diet for about 3.5 weeks now..the first 10 days or so was weining him into it from kibble/canned dog food and we made mistake of giving him chicken 1 day, beef next day an he has loose poops, but thanks to this group we learned to stick to chicken which he has been eating along with his turkey necks. He is very picky and is getting real bored with chicken-even though he gets thighs 1 day, split breat (w/bone in) next day etc. He wants to know if he can switch to beef or pork seeing how his poops have been solid for about 4 straight days. Also when switching to next protein I did read that we should just add a little of new protein to his chicken dinner but once he works up to full meal of pork or beef does he have to stay on just that protein for a while or can he still go back to chicken for a day to prevent boredom? thanks in advance for your help

Hello (woof), Max our 95-100lb GSD is starting over on his raw prey diet..we started him with chicken but because he gets bored we gave him beef then pork--too soon so he got loose poops so now back to square 1--chicken. We gave him boneless breast because he wouldn't eat the leg quarter bone (got bored with them) and we gave him a turkey neck which he LOVED. We watched while he ate it. How often can he get turkey necks? We try to feed 2x a day as he is just a little thin behind the ribs. Are chicken wings ok? Sorry for all the questions-just trying to get as many poultry options so he doesnt get bored,,ty smile

TY both for your responses. My boyfriend was asking about the fat in beef..example pot roast/bottom roast..we did read that a lot of fat could also cause loose poop so he wanted to know when we add in beef should we look for less marbling in red meat? We are back to chicken but he only eats 1x a day with just chicken-he gets bored with same meal 2x a day and wont eat it no matter what-not even the bones. He has always loved hamburger (cooked in the past) which is 1 way we would get him to eat-if we add a bit of raw hamburger with chicken would that still be too much too soon? We are trying to get him to gain a little bit so we want him to eat 2x if at all possible..ty again smile
